Top 13 Things to Do in Kyoto, Japan

  • Here are my Top 13 Things to do in Kyoto, Japan! Kyoto is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan with countless iconic attractions such as the Fushimi Inari Torii Gates, Kiyomizudera Temple, the Sagano Bamboo Grove in Arashiyama, geisha in Gion, the Golden Pavilion Kinkakuji, and much more. It's always the place most closely associated with traditional Japanese culture, ancient temples, other worldly shrines and more.
    Although this is a list of 13 things, you will find that there is actually much more included such as hidden gems, recommendations, and some potential drawbacks for different activities. Kyoto is incredibly dense with magical neighborhoods, parks, gardens, hikes, and more, so it goes without saying that there is much more to do here than I covered in this video. I have visited Kyoto 3 times so far, and there is still many things that I want to check out. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

    The bus to Kinkakuji goes by Nijo Castle - which should absolutely be on your list. You can do both on the same day. Nijo puts Edo/Meiji Restoration etc into context. No cameras allowed and you have to take your shoes off - so despite not being a temple of shrine its one of the most peaceful places to visit in Kyoto.

The lady who helped me was incredibly lovely, made me matcha to try, even gave me tea for free as I was buying sort of a "set" (I had only ever tried the stirred version of matcha at home, and the whisked one was unsurprisingly SO much better, it was basically a different drink). Hi from Brazil! TH-cam just suggested me this video, and Thanks God it did, so good to see a video that really shows almost everything that a first timer should see and do. How many days do you recommend for all this? I’m going in November, I know it’s pretty busy. I also want to do the boat ride in Arashiyama, (the one with a guide that goes down the River), and stay there for dinner as I heard that they do some amazing lighting in the foliage
    at night. I’m going to watch the rest of your Japan videos now (and take notes!). 🙏🏻

    • @WanderlustWellman
      @WanderlustWellman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To have the best experience, I would say at least 3 - 4 full days and ideally I would say 5-7 days to take everything in. The boat ride in Arashiyama did look really beautiful, I know they have a scenic train over in that area that looks great too. We visited in the beginning of November and the foliage wasn’t in full effect, I believe its more present later in the month. Thanks for checking out my videos, have a great trip!

      Thank you so much, that makes me so happy to hear! My wife and I spent about 6 days in Kyoto which was a really good amount, I guess it depends on how much time you are able to spend in Japan. I would try and stay at least 3 full days if possible with one day being dedicated to Higashiyama/Kiyomizudera/Gion, one day for Fushimi Inari/anything else, or honestly chilling, and one day for Arashiyama/Monkey/Park/Bamboo Forest.

    If you speak Japanese, the Kanji Museum in Gion is really fun and interesting (and they give you lots of free stuff on the second floor). In Gion is also Minamiza kabuki theater. if you, like me, love Meiji Era history, hiking up to Doshisha Cemetery is really great (and you will see zero foreign tourists). In Arashiyama, I would visit London Books,... it's a used bookstore and the first time I ever saw a Japanese language complete collection of Dostoevsky. There's also the train museum,... I really wanted to go but it's incredibly popular with unvaccinated Japanese children so last August I just stayed in the park.

    I generally like your video and appreciate the hard work you have put into it. But, having been to Kyoto twice, and to Japan 3 times, for each time 4 weeks, I am not really agreeing with some of your recommendations. And also, I feel that you are really not mentioning some amazing places in Kyoto.
    The Sagano Bamboo forest is for me absolutely horrible. It would be beautiful, but as its so overrun and full of people taking pictures for Instragram etc., its an absolute no go for me. There are so many beautiful bamboo groves all over Japan, where you can enjoy the nature, without so many peoples.
    Also, you missed so many of the most beautiful tempels in Kyoto. You just went to the two most touristy temples there. Which probably shows how much you know about Kyoto. I dont mean that as an insult. But in my opinion, if you want to publish a video about a place, you should know a little bit more than the average person. Which is very clearly not the case with you.

    • @WanderlustWellman
      @WanderlustWellman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad that you generally like the video, and thanks for recognizing the hard work I put into it. I can also tell that you are attempting to just make genuine constructive criticism, which I am receptive to and also appreciate. However, I do disagree with a lot of what you said.
      The Sagano Bamboo Forest can be absolutely horrible if it is extremely busy, which admittedly, it often is. I believe I mentioned in the video to try and come as early as possible on a weekday to avoid the crowds, because for some people the crowds can ruin the experience. Sure, you can find more peaceful and less touristy bamboo groves in Japan, but this one is still magnificent and popular for a reason.
      Did I miss many of the beautiful temples in Kyoto? Of course, there are over 2,000 temples and shrines in Kyoto. There's no way I could have included all the ones I wanted to such as the Silver Pavilion, Kodaiji, Ryoanji, and countless others. That's why I made a point to make the first thing on my list as "Get Lost" - I truly believe the best way to experience Kyoto is to make your adventure and discover your own temples, shrines, gardens, and things off the beaten path. I have been to Kyoto 3 times myself, and I honestly would still recommend people visit Kiyomizudera and Kinkakuji at least once - I even mentioned that Kinkakuji doesn't provide the ideal temple experience, but it's still a magnificent sight.
      There are so many things to do in Kyoto that could be included on this list, but my goal was to at least include the essentials and a somewhat diverse list of things. I don't claim to be THE expert on Kyoto, as I've only visited for maybe a total of 20 days in total, but I certainly know more than the average person due to my personal experience and research. Again, I know that you are not meaning to be insulting, but your tone is edging towards being condescending and rude towards the end. Thanks for watching!

      @@WanderlustWellman Thanks a lot for your answer. I didnt want to be rude or condescending, and I am sorry if it came over to you like that. Englisch is not my first language, and it is not always easy to express very correctly what I think and feel like.

    They are nice because you are not Asian. They aren't that nice people.

      Disagree, sometimes I have been prevented from entering restaurants or bars because I'm a foreigner. I think it depends on the people or place

      But generally, Japanese people have been extremely kind to me and my wife across our travels!

      @@WanderlustWellman because that's place is only for Japanese. Generally speaking they treat white people much kind without any prejudice.
