1 thing in the manners/eating section, a lot of restaurants are really small in Japan and have really long lines, people over there don't stay seated talking after finishing eating, if you see around you, almost everyone eats and then leaves right away. Since some places are so small is courtesy and pretty much common to leave right away so you free the seats for the next people. Chances are you are not going to be told to leave, at least not right away, but you will get weird looks.
There are some exceptions of course, family restaurants tend to have way more seating and people take their time on those ones.
Yes! So true! It’s like ramen places are “fast food” in a way but way better than our “fast food” lol. People stare at the people not leaving. It’s great! We loved it!
I also love that some of the ramen places that have heavy broth give you the paper bib aprons! 😎

It’s so amazing in Japan! Food, culture, everything!
I just returned from Japan last week. So many things I didn’t know about that I learned the hard way. But as of last week, non-nationals couldn’t buy a blank Suica or Passmo card. You have to get a personalized one physical card or add to wallet (which I did). Since I didn’t have a Japanese bank account, I couldn’t get a refund from my Passmo account. I lost $20, but oh well. I traveled solo to Tokyo and definitely depended on iPhone translation app or Google translate. The iPhone app translates images, & has a text and/or conversation feature. I did a lot of that: type in my question or request and translate it for them to read.
I wish I had studied the Tokyo ward (districts) names & familiarized myself with the train lines before going and trying to get around. I bought a JR Tokyo Wide Pass online that covers a great range of the JR line in & around Tokyo. But the ticket machine couldn’t read the QR code & I ended up in the ticket office showing my passport to get a ticket. It can be cheaper to fly to other cities, but taking a Shinkansen train is a fun experience. Just reserve a seat!
The JR Rail site has JR line maps, local rail lines, subway and bus transit maps. It’s great. And I grabbed a Tokyo map at my hotel that was invaluable.
Finally, you are so right about the trash! I carried around my trash in my backpack until I got back to my room or, snuck it in a trashcan somewhere (never know where) because they do have recycling bins that take “combustibles.” Oh, restrooms don’t have paper towels though some have soap or sanitizer. And the toilets can be talking bidet toilets or squatty pottys in the countryside. I do wish I had seen your videos before my trip! The only thing I could suggest is a step by step guide to transportation how tos. But you touch on important details. I’d like your advice on a good taxi/ride share app that doesn’t require a Japanese bank account or phone number! So many people were very kind to me. I was struggling and more than a handful of Japanese nationals stepped in to help me. Plus a very kind American taught me that taxis in Tokyo must have a green light to be free! He flagged down a taxi and translated my needs for the driver in Japanese. I just showed the driver my phone map with the address & we were off. So many once in a lifetime memories. Thank you!

Helloo, I’m off to Japan next week and wanted to ask - is seat reservation in the Shinkansen necessary? I have the JR pass and I’m wondering if I absolutely need to reserve a seat for myself
I thought anybody can buy a blank/new SUICA at the automated-ticket machine.
Regarding the IC or SUICA cards, you got it the wrong way around.
Foreigners CANNOT buy the personalized cards precisely because you need a valid Japanese phone number or bank account number.
But ANYBODY can buy a blank IC card. Just step up to any ticket machine at any JR Station in Japan and buy one 😊.

when eating, i think "gochisousama deshita" makes more sense to say vs "arigtatou gosaismasu" (same manners, but this is a "thank you" specific to the meal. i think you could follow up with the extra thank you at the end when exiting maybe. this is what i observed when living in japan for some years.

wow thank you so much! This was very helpful to me! my group and I will be going to Japan in less than a month in early June. I already knew some of these tips before watching and this was a great refreshing in addition to learning things that I didnt know before. I am actively learning the language, customs, and culture as much as possible before I go with the amount of time I have left! I will handwrite a little notepad with basic japanese words and phrases with the english translation as a guide to help me out while I am there so that I am not "that guy" in Japan. My group could take a few pages from what I am doing to help prepare them since some of them are not learning any of the language, customs, or culture before they go thinking they can "just wing it" adding to the chance of being "that guy" or "that tourist" :D

@@leefox3640 🤩you will do great! I would say just make sure you have your pocket wifi or a working cell service/SIM card. I loved doing pocket wifi!
Everyone is sooooo nice there. If you are feeling lost, pull yourself to the side and then look at your maps app on your phone. If you need help, then you can also ask someone 💗. If I had a high school or college daughter or son, I would feel comfortable with them going out without me. I would not feel comfortable in other countries though… just Japan lol 😝

I got my JR pass before I leave because once you are there it may be too late. Also if you are young and especially if you are traveling alone or with someone you are not romantically attached to, don't forget youth Hostels. Get your membership before you arrive and for popular spots, such as Kyoto, reservations are needed. Camping is also possible but requires expert knowledge of bare minimum equipment needed since if you rent the stuff there, you end up spending more than you thought. Again reservations.

Check the conversion rates at the ATM. Most of the exchange rates in exchange shops are around 5% worse than the Bank exchange rate (the rate you see when you google it), meaning you get 5% less (and that would be the shop's "take"). Most banks do an ATM withdrawal exchange rate of only 1% difference or less (sometimes matching the rate). This goes true for credit card purchases to, as they also usually have a better exchange rate than actual shops. But do check with what bank you are with for outside service ATM withdrawal fees, and credit card purchase rates though.
I've always found that withdrawing from the ATM and using credit cards to have better exchange rates than physically changing cash at shops.

Quick tip to make reading a possibility, learn Katakana. Almost every word you you come into contact with in Katakana will be an English loan word, so just knowing that will make it a lot easier to figure things out.
Good example, coin locker is コインロッカー(koin rokka), beer is ビール(biiru) etc.

I would like to add that some ramen shops are a little complicated when it comes to ordering ramen. For example, some shops ask you how firm you want your noodles, or how much vegetables or garlic you want, etc. In some shops, even the Japanese don't know how to order if they don't know the rules lol If you are not confident in your Japanese, you may want to avoid such shops. Well, of course, even if you don't understand Japanese, I'm sure they'll be kind enough to teach you how to order.

I just came back from a one week trip to Japan. I stayed in Tokyo and did not need much money at all. Places either accepted card and also you can use your Suica card on your iPhone and pay for the things. I honestly can’t recall a single place we went and had to have cash but just to be safe bring some cash with you. If you are staying in Tokyo, I highly doubt you will need $200 a day in cash

I would also recommend getting an Esim on your phone to activate international data. Otherwise several carriers will give you a pretty big Bill when you get home.

Hi Erica, thanks for the great tips on Japan travel. Even though I’ve traveled to Japan a few times already, it’s still good reminders that you had put out! I’m also curious about the masks you wore on the trip. They look like fabric ones and I like how they cinches up by the side of your cheeks instead of leaving a gaping hole (as with the paper surgical ones). My sister got them for me from Etsy! I love them so much. They are just satin ones but they don’t suffocate me lol. They have a pocket as well that you can put a filter if you really wanted to. We just checked though and the seller doesn’t have their shop anymore 😭. I would still try Etsy.com and look up satin or silk face mask and find the highest reviews for the type of mask you like!

Here’s another tip if you are going to many places in Japan: pack lightly, and only bring carry on bags or carry on luggage
😎agree! We had laundry in our hotel and it was great! Next time we go, for sure bringing less things!
Sorry if this is a silly question, I have only flown 1 time and only had one bag I took, that I put in the overhead compartment above the seats.
When you say only bring a carry on, does that mean no "checked luggage?" Does that mean the bags that get put on the bottom of the plane and go on that convert belt thing when its time for pick up?
We might be going for 3 weeks, there’s no packing lightly. We’ll be doing laundry every 3 days.
@@nate3452 hi nate!! There are 3 types of bags people bring on an airplane 😀
1) check in bag (bigger bag that can weigh up to normally 50 pounds)
2) carry on bag (the one that is usually as tall as a skateboard and go above your head on an airplane)
3) a personal item (whatever fits under the seat in front of you)
Very light packers do just carry on and personal item (which is what this person was referencing) ☺️
But a lot of people tend to bring all three bags when traveling around the world :)

Very useful tips. Can you briefly name 4 or 5 sights & hotels to stay by those sights? I might travel alone & I don't speak japanese so that app that translates by taking a picture will be great. Just thinking about train ( and airplane) travel gets me anxious already. Mostly just to buy tickets, get there on time ( like arranging another transport roo ..) and get on the right train . An example route or 2 to a sight from purchase to arrival on a video would be appreciated. Anyways, I enjoyed the video. thx

Hi, Thank you for your video. It is very informative. Can I ask a question on the recommended amount to bring to 30 000 to 50 000 yen each day. Is it for 1 person and is accommodation included? Is this only for Food, Transportation and Activities while you are in Japan?
Hi! Per adult 30,000-50,000 JPY would be recommended for just cash on hand. (Not for accommodation). It’s just to cover you just in case you go to any place that doesn’t take card or if you need to cover something etc. For sure you don’t need to spend all that. But in another country like japan it’s good to have some cash on you.
If you are just doing little shops and stuff you can carry less. But if you are going to bars, omakase, shopping, etc, then bring more.

When you say essentials, can you clarify what you mean?
Also I would recommend if you are in Tokyo, take a look at the Yamanote green line :). You can go on it with an IC card (SUICA, pasmo, icoca, etc) or JR pass. The yamanote line hits all the major stops in Tokyo! So fun to explore!! Our favorite is Shinjuku and Shibuya!

Excellent video. We are travelling to Hokkaido and towards Aomori in July on bikes. I have used the Pocket wifi each visit and been happy with it although it's just another device to carry. Last time I tried buying a sim card and it wasn't working on my phone. Do you have a suggestion for Pocket wifi? Also JR pass doesn't include Hokkaido does it? We will probably take the train only 2 or 3 times. And do you know if the Hokkaido shinkansen does accept bikes? With our bike bag of course. Thank you if you have more knowledge.
Wow! Sounds like an amazing trip!!! I know it depends on the type of JR pass you get! You can get it by region or you can get the whole shabang! I am pretty sure the Hokkaido will be included in at least one of those options!! As far as large funky items such as bikes in a bag, I think it depends on how big it is!

We loved using a pocket wifi! Ours covered 5-10 devices and 20-30 foot radius which was amazing for my husband and i. We bought it from www.jrpass.com but you can get it at the airport or BIC camera too :)
Maybe try a ticket calculator! If you only go twice on the train, you might break even than if you didn’t get the JR pass :) (since we are talking before October when the prices increase)
If you go 3 times on the train, the JR pass is worth it (before October) :)
Nothing new so far because I was already there once, but I think it's a really good video for people visiting japan the first time.
Double check your baggage size, the biggest suitcase will be too big for the shuttle service for luggage between hotels.

Hi Erica, first of all thanks for the well-explained video! Next week I’m going for my first solo trip to Japan, and these tips will surely help me. I do have a questions first of all the money though, to me (as a student) $200-300 a day is a lot of money to spend in a day, is it also do-able to have a lower budget (i.e. $100-150/200)? Also, about the trash cans, let’s say you want to throw away your garbage, is it okay to go to the convenience store quickly to throw away your stuff? I mean, how did you do it?

Hello! Great question. It does NOT mean you have to spend that in a day. It just means have it with you just in case. Most of the time my husband and I just spent under $60 per day. Just pay attention to prices so you aren’t accidentally blindsided. Idk what to do if you couldn’t pay your bill and they didn’t accept card. A lot of places don’t accept card still. It also applies a lot to people that actually buy souvenirs too :)
You can totally do a lower amount and just make sure you check prices and budget really well :)
For trash cans, we sometimes used konbini (convenience store) if it was tiny trash but most of the time we just brought it back to the hotel where we had trashcans in our room woohoo!!

New thing: you can NOT buy a Suica/Passmo card from machines (for now) due to the lack of available IC chips. I suggest you check if your phone will allow you to download the app instead (paid for digitally). You might also want to purchase a "Tourist" card at the airport instead (but again, no longer readily available for anyone, even residents).

i have friends from Taiwan that basically just pay for airtickets, and bring only their passport card and mobile with them (dont worry ur mobile phone can be suica and credit card), then first thing they do is go buy a suitcase from doki and then go shopping and eating, stuffing their newly brought suitcase with lots of items, go back to Taiwan, sell their suitcase (yes for a profit). Arrive early in the morning and leave on the last flight out of Japan. even if u wish to stay longer than a day u can buy clothing and almost everything u need there, except medications which they might not have. if u dont know where to get things just enter any convience stall , don don doki, cosmo u will find 90% of things u need. oh ya reminder do not check out with the auto gates at the airport because u will need a stamp to get tax refunds. also unlike many countries u cannot use a photo copy of ur passport in japan, u need to use original but do take a pic of ur passport just in case. language will not be a barrier because 1/4 of japanese word look like mandarin, 1/4 of them sounds like english, so basically you can already made up 1/2 the words even if u do not understand japanese, the couple with some hand puppeting, dancing and google translate u should be no problem. Also do carry more cash than u expected because there are many shops in japan that do not accept visa and master, only diners and jcb. Also many payments that work in USA such as flashpay or watever might not work in japan, they have their own system. Also not eveything from the drink vending machine in japan are drinkable , because they do sell soap in drink vending machine, and also soy sauce and dashi sauce. dont be the next person that end up in japan clinic after you drunk a whole bottle of soy sauce that u brought from a vending machine. Also if ur digestion is bad i suggest u carry with you fibre supplements because most japan meals tend to lack veges and even if they have are mostly root veges which tend to lack fibre. Also if for some reason u cannot eat alcohol or beef then pls ask because many of the sauces have alcohol and beef. also do not insist on english menu because sometime there are less items there and at certain time it might be more expensive. if u cant understand japanese, just randomly point at a few item that add up to ur budget, dont worry if it is on the menu, its edible. or usually they will put an icon like a star or chef hat beside, which means its good lol. also japanese do learn english at school so they can actually understand basic english but are not confidence to use or say.

when in doubt, train stations have a bathroom! sometimes konbinis have a bathroom too!

Hey Erica! I found your video very helpful, but I still have a question! Me and my mom are going back to the Philippines for three weeks in july and we plan to stay in tokyo for a day, is it still necessary to get a JR pass and Suica card? Because I also heard that there are also 24 and 72 hour train tickets.. I can imagine that a suica card can be very useful, but if I would only stay in Tokyo for a day, it might be more convenient to only take cash or possibly a credit card? Thank you!
How fun!!! If you are only in Tokyo for a day, I would say just take out cash (go to a 711 ATM or use your card). Using card should be the easiest because you won’t need to convert any cash back. Also Tokyo in most places do cash and/or card :)
If you want to do a train ticket, you can always buy it at the kiosk or go to the ticket person usually at the gates :)
I wouldn’t do SUICA card because I believe you need to put a certain amount on it to get it and you likely will have too much money on the SUICA card :)

We just remembered where we got dropped off (they drop you off at the ticket station) then bought a ticket right there to take us back :)
Nice video, tips were explained very well. I’ve heard in China taxi drivers do not speak English at all, so you need a picture with the address in Chinese to show the driver. One tip I have is to at least learn some basic Japanese words, like good morning, afternoon, evening, please, and thank you. There are 2 ways to say thank like thank you for what you are doing (which is how you said it) and there is the past tense which is thank you for what you have done. Sorry I cannot spell them. Biggest tip is be courteous and respectful. You can tip taxi drivers. Spent many years there, was on 3 ships in Yokosuka, and was stationed in Okinawa.
