I feel like Dune is a bit overrated in terms of the number of movies, mini series, and endless remakes that it generates. Herbert came up with some pretty interesting concepts and was good with big galaxy spanning themes, but the nuts and bolts like dialogue, action, pacing, and character are all fairly weak. And I'm not even going to talk about the stuff that his son and Kevin J. Anderson (the Dean Koontz of the science fiction world) scribbled together from his notes. Ugh.

You should wait till September to release a Junji Ito video because if you do, it'll get a larger viewer bump due to Uzumaki FINALLY being released on Adult Swim/Cartoon Network on Sept 28th, 2024. BTW, you should go check out its trailer. It actually looks amazing. They use Ito's unique drawing style as animation. It's black and white a d stay true to its horror roots.

You probably should advise your readers the Providence comic is Not for Kids. It begins with a super graphic/ super disturbing r@pe scene along with extreme violence/gore. Moore said that in this comic he wanted to show the things that Lovecraft only hinted at in the stories. Not for kids or the faint hearted.
In my opinion, it’s only Lovecraft in name only/no cosmic horror or fear of the unknown. Just some dumbed down Lovecraft inspired cults/monsters killing/ravaging/torturing people. I think the graphic s@x attack is more for shock value rather than for good storytelling.
I would first thumb through a copy at your bookstore and see if it’s for you before buying.
Sorry for the long text/thought it was important to share. Great video btw

Ive never really read much sci-fi beyond Lovecraft and Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut, and haven’t read any fiction in years, but I still enjoy listening to you talk about it. You’ve definitely made me more interested in sci-fi and have rejuvenated my love for reading. I’ve now got a sci-fi reading list because of you and will eventually start delving in. Gonna start with some older stuff that I planned on reading a long time ago, then get Blindsight and then go from there.

The best ever Le Guinn IMHO is a novella, Four Ways to Forgiveness, later Five Ways to Forgiveness (she added a story) *It is set in her science fiction universe* (The Central Galaxy Hainish civilization that planted colonies all over the universe and then went home, waited centuries for contact, gradually form a coalition of many worlds) *on two planets, one settled by escaped slaves from the other planet.*
There are off planet characters, but it is ABOUT the two worlds and the changes they are going through. It is somehow about all the unresolved issues in American history, (that's how I see it, I am a Yank) and how people resolve them in their lives, about belonging and finding your place, about fighting for your rights, about helping others, honesty, honor.

I mentioned it in the chat, but Check out, “Lord of Light’” by Roger Zelazny. It won both the Hugo and Nebula for best novel. Narnia, published 1. book 1950, Wheel of Time,1990, Silmarillion, published posthhumously 1977, Asimov's career started in the 1940s but his magnum opus, foundation , came out 1951.
Tolkien and Lewis were friends who often shared and critiqued each other's writing, so Narnia is in dialogue with Tolkien's writings, even Silmarillion as he could have read the unpublished manuscripts, but it cannot be a reply to the other books published after it.

Speaking of Star Wars, perhaps you should consider getting into, or at least exploring, the earlier, pre-Disney stories which were concentrated within literature. Primarily books and graphic novels, now falling under the category “Legends”. I’m thinking particularly, the initial continuations of the original films, primarily works by Timothy Zahn and Kevin J. Anderson. Authors who are known outside the franchise and are elsewise adept at sci fi narratives outside the often limiting strictures of popular blockbuster films entertainment. Anderson, you’d obviously be aware of through your experience in the Dune sphere. I suspect those such works could be a bit more in line with the more refined “palate” you’ve likely become accustomed to in the literary end of the genre. Also it might give you a more “enriching” insight into the greater concepts behind the franchise, being that it’s not focused around “whiz bang” and all that.

Many awesome books, some of which I'll absolutely check out. Out of the books I have read the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer (Annihilation being book #1) is exceptional.
Edit: Scott Sigler and his Infected trilogy somehow comes to mind when thinking of Southern Reach.

Has Stephen King ever done a proper “space opera” type story, or at least something in the “space age/spacefaring” sort of mold? I can only imagine what that would play out like.😳

I would avoid Canticle for Liebowitz. A long slow recovery from nuclear war - radiation, Catholicism, mutants, mutant Catholicism, and an ending like the beginning I found just pointless.

I’m somewhat curious what your take is on the SCP “stories” (came to me immediately after your very brief mention of creepy pastas). Do you find there to be any value or at least meaningful contemplative discourse, so to speak, in the perhaps more vague sci fi concepts as portrayed in the much looser and unrefined manner of group narrative projects of that nature?

I don't think Alan Moore actually thinks the Ripper in From Hell is the ripper. He just used the character to make his points and illustrate his themes. In the back matter, he explains this.

Annihilation is such a great book. At some time I need to pick it up for a re-read. Did you enjoy the second & third book in the series? I had a hard time getting into the second book for some reason I can't quite pin point yet.
