- Fine-tuning my new/used ShopSmith DC3300 dust collector after years of neglect. Replacing deteriorated seals, and adding new ones, and keeping it clean with a cyclonic separator for a bag free future.
Hals Wood Shop. Shopsmith owner 30 years. I bought the 3300 and upgraded by changing the front to a 4 inch mount--flat plat with 4 inch hose mount--..just screwed it into the pvc frame--- now use a 4inch hose. their design chokes the power too much and loss of flow going 4 inch to 2.5 inch hose. worth my fun, much happier and cheap fix. now a 2 whatever end on the 4 inch hose for the dust port and wow it really captures the dust. Best Wishes.
Those are all viable options to improve the unit. However if I had the space for a permanent ducted installation I would sooner construct or purchase a Clear View centrifugal separator for its superior performance.
Great breakdown of all your tweaks. Nice setup with the cyclone.
I bought a used Shopsmith a few weeks ago that came with their dust collector, and like yours the seals were all dried out. I used adhesive window seal tape to close the gaps on the back. In the front I considered a few different options. What I ended up doing was attaching the intake to the body and then from the inside I sprayed minimal expanding foam around the perimeter gap. Then I dropped the motor/fan into place, attached the half-circle bracket, and then used caulk to fill the gap between that bracket and the inside wall of the body. I also used caulk between the two halves of the motor/fan housing, as I could see daylight in a few places where the pieces didn't butt up against one another perfectly.
I have no idea how good or bad of a dust collector it is, but since I'll only be using the Shopsmith for home projects it's going to have to do. No plans on doing their motor upgrade.
So far I have no reason to believe that the dust collector vacuum is the problem. In truth I believe it is the saw shroud that is terribly inefficient, but I can't say for sure because I haven't been using it with another saw.
The three 2 1/2 inlets can be one added ,the face plate can be removed and a hole saw drill another 4" opening for a major amount of air flow to add 4" sewer plumbing pipe to a built in system to your shop along the wall with gates etc.
Yep that's a common thing, but I have a small cramped two-car garage. There's no room or need for all that permanent piping.
Good afternoon, I hope all is well
Thanks for the comment, if only I were Homesteading Northern Michigan, there might be more interest. I know I'd be more interested.
I've got to fix that back seal myself after things weren't sounding right, and I think there is some soaker hose around the house somewhere. How has it held up since this video?
I had absolutely no indications of a problem with the work I've done. I will tempted to get in there soon and disassemble it. I too am curious about what happened to all the parts inside as they cured.
shopsmith sells a taller bag for the top I would still use the plastic bag for dust
I haven't made any further changes to the unit itself. I still use the cyclonic separator for the bulk of the material. I haven't seen the point in making any for the modifications because the greatest failing is with the effectiveness of the saw shroud on the Shop Smith.
