Fantastic progress this time around. The water dump was a huge move from a cost/result perspective. Id say the next one is automated pumps. You can power them off of water wheels perfectly. When the water stops they run out of power, when it comes back, so do the pumps.
You have access to more trees for the cost of 1 stair. Its by the area where you got the trees to climb the mountain, off to the left side of the screen but down a little bit.
Was just about to comment the same. All those 25 oaks with 200 logs just waiting to be cut. Every time JC would go check on the logs he did find i would point at the screen and say JUST look down :)
The little fluid dump that could - "I think I can, I think I can" 😉... it helped a lot. (nicely done with the diversion 👍 the green is spreading! 🤗 won't be long until it's %100 clean water flowing past the horseshoe)
As for thanking everyone for their suggestions, you're welcome. But as I've learned over the years many eyes see different things, and good eyes mention it in a positive way.
i am loving your series. I downloaded these mods last Friday and started in hard mode. I blocked off the bad water on both sides of the colony and grabbed the scrap metal close to the colony on the way up.
Hey JC!! That big round divot you have to right.. instead of foresters next to contaminated rivers.. you could put 6 blocks in there, had a 3x3 and coulda been farming tree's without contamination, and with much less water than filling in the river ;) Mighta helped getting up and running, then filling river :D But as always.. I LOVE YOUR CHAOS!!!
"The one farmhouse isn't keeping up with all the crops, let's build another.". Then proceeds to plant even more crops... Really enjoying your content!! Thank you for all the time and effort!
@25:35, you have the grade change here and this forester is in range to build an inland tree farm. Cause of the grade, you can build fluid dump above the levees. Access both above and blew without stairs. QED, 1 forester that doesnt have to be moved.
You can straighten out the path to the dam over to the badwater diversion. There's some turns, but the berries you wante to avoid there are long dead. there's also more dead oaks further down the peninsula where you got the other ones.
Great Progress! Consider the small canal in the lower portion for the next waterdump, it is small enough that you don´t need a lot to section it off and can use most of the land around for trees as there is nothing else around while being close enough to the living space. /edit: I mean like 4-5 levees for a small reservoir right at the blockage.
Yay glad you finally got the horseshoe cleared of bad water that helped a lot. And got to block some of the bad water as well. Now that you got ladders and stairs. You should definitely block the other side and have nothing but clean water coming through
I was so jealous of how much fun you were having I started my own play through. I’m about at the end of cycle 4. Trying to figure out how my next steps honestly.
→ 35:06 "I think this forester also needs to go away" - no, you can still set up an irrigation pond (by building 9 levees), which will irrigate quite a bit area where this forester can plant. → 49:37 This 1×1 metal platform is just the short version of the longer overhang you already have in the other factions. I think the only reason to use this instead of a wooden platform is so it fits visually with the overhangs. → Consider also building a medium tank or two for your juices - during the drought the water wheels don't turn, so you'll want to have some juice stored up.
49:14 The are all those oaks, in the bottom right hand corner, to cut down yet! There has to be over 200 logs in all of them. Also, why not use some levees and a water dump, on the level down from the new farm? It will give more farm land, but will be close enough to the forester to plant more trees.
Going to take way too many planks and logs to build over there. Remember, these beavers get a big debuff for getting wet, so we can't just have them walk underwater to get there
31:50 If the water for this area is only coming from the dump, it might be interesting to make a new set of levies in line with where the contamination reaches from the river to reduce the evaporation area and dump there. 33:49 It seems you got the same idea. 42:04 You might want to build another water-wheel, since the flow will reduce.
@49:10 also viewable at 23:57 .you could also put a water dump in the channel that has the blockages running between the bad water exit and the normal exit and irrigate another forest area for trees. Remember if you dont have at least 4 lumberjacks per forester the forester will be able to plant faster then them and you waste land time. with a 4 to 1 ratio the forester is always chasing the lumberjacks and never sitting still. If your forester is sitting and trees are ready then you are not at the right mix of lumberjacks.
53:09 you could gradually relocate your first farm, the lodgings, the inventor huts, etc. out of the green area to maximise your crop and wood production.
Once you get dynamite and are setting up your larger farming areas, i like the design of: 2 farms back to back with a fluid dump in between! Make that two deep and you've got lots of space! Now that you've got one of these badwater sources blocked off you can identify the other 2 contaminating your water supply and start working on a badwater diversion
I noticed you have a reservoir between the 2 dams of destructible tiles at the end of the bad water river behind the colony. A fluid dump, a medium water tank and a water pump on the lake side should allow you to keep that area well filled with clean water and give you lots of room for trees on either side of the new reservoir. Additionally, in general, I'd have the haulers and builders set to priority lower than normal but maxed out the beavers so they will auto fill with beavers as you pause other buildings but not take away from other jobs between times.
Add a badwater pump to the U-pond or let it dry out, then fill it again. The pump could go to the upper right, next to the levee. After badwater is gone, add a levee to the left of pump & replace upper levee with platform. Pump is now in river.
To scale the cliff to get to the badwater source: I think I added this up correctly. If you go with ladders and bridges and if you need 14 levels of grade change, then you need about 60 logs and 88 planks with 450 science (probably possible to avoid the 1x1 bridge piece. Doing this with stairs, I think you have a natural stair to go up a level (down stream). So you should only need 13 new stairs and 8 single platforms or a total of 29 logs and 84 planks. But only 170 science. Ladders are easier to use. If you are going up 2 units high: 2 ladders and 1 platform is cheaper but going up 3 or more units (platforms, you are saving planks). Feel free to factor into the refund cost (if you first have to build stairs to 2 levels up then rip out that scaffolding and rebuild for 3 or 4 levels up, this also is a cost that doesn’t exist with ladders)
Hey man, your really good farming space bottom of the horseshoe is being occupied by the farmhouse and the Storages, you might want to move them as long term that area would not be affected as its inland.
Tobbert's ladders script really makes 1 change. If a building is specifically named "Ladder", then a beaver can just build it from any height. This gets around not being able to stand under a ladder that they're currently building like they would build something on a platform, they always need to be offset by 1 tile. So, Tobbert just changed it so they can build a ladder from any height. So yes, the beavers are building those ladders from the base of the mountain.
The cut off river bed towards where the water flows off the map. Open one block and let the partially contaminated water in to create a protected tree farm.
45:43 if you make a 3x3 partition by building levees for each waterdump you can save a bunch of water ... Then just put a ladder down & plant on lower and upper land ... I believe a 3x3 of water greens about 17 unit radius
54:11 Speaking of the next major project bridging the right side of the waterfall to reduce the contamination even further. 54:32 Although you'll want to demolish the barriers in the stream on the lower right and make sure there isn't flooding.
I'm gonna suggest doing some Aesthetics! not for the sake of "looking good" or whatever - but because the early tier stuff only costs a few dozen-ish science, and isn't THAT costly in resources, but provides entire wellbeing points which can get you MUCH closer to bonuses! Also making one of your medium tanks for holding juice will... maybe not be efficient but will look AWESOME, I'm so glad that the juices come in different colors
25:45 you mention the 6 pine trees but keep forgetting about the tonnes of dead oak trees on the other side of the river. hurray 30:57 you go to the oaks :)
apple trees seem like a great idea for this map, food + juice + wood all from a single resource 🦫 especially with water being so hard to build up, more valuable than ever in this one 😬
Current water situation looks stable as of now. I will suggest to redo the buildings which are on now green area and maximise crop and tree farming before expanding population.
I've only got two things. One is, can we please fix the janky path by the dam? The berry bushes are dead, so we could easily straighten it. Second, we seem to be dumping non-stop into the horse shoe, and the water is holding steady with only half the pumps running. Looks like we could keep splashing or even fill the little pond to the northeast. That would provide a ton of growing room for trees or whatever. Or we could do like you suggested and partition it with levies. It just appears to be fewer tiles than the horse shoe to me. Also, just because I don't know, do the mechanical fluid pumps, pump all water, or can you select between good/bad? Could we make a channel from levies and have it pump good water through that to fill the little lake?
We're going to fix the path and the fluid dump issues soon! The big mechanical pumps do have a selection switch between mixed, good, and badwater flow.
Remember when comparing Stairs vs Ladders you MUST factor in Platforms with Stairs. Thus it's really Ladders vs Stairs & Platforms, which most times actually factors out to be cheaper just going with Ladders.
i like the look of the challenge this map offers with hard mode. However my 1st attempt ended very abruptly as i had 2 20 day badtides back to back really early which killed any chance of growing food or trees for wood. Just unlucky i will try again
I can't speak for everyone in the comments. However I'm guessing we agree that if you want to drop down stream gauges in dev mode to just understand the global water flow, that is ok. This will help you to plan. Just leave them up through your playthrough.
I know this isn't apocalypse mode, but since you mentioned the power wheel here, I wanted to add my thought for a name. Instead if treating working in it as a punishment, why not make it an honor? These are beavers that are sacrificing their bodies to help the colony survive. So why not call it the Beard Booster Wheel? The boost e rs support you and since the beavers are named after them, let them support the colonies as well.
✴️✴️✴️ i presume you will eventually want to dam up the downstream edge of the map where the future clean water disappears off the map, in preparation for that you can log the trees that are same altitude as the downstream ruins. 23:58
Hmm, you do know that all the paths in middle island is way more trees that can be planted if you just put the tree planter on the green area to the right. Now youre wasting 10-15 trees for paths
The thought process was to get logs quickly, and then replant with oaks once long-term irrigation is guaranteed. I guess I didn't say that part out loud
I love your optimise of looking at getting ladders before stairs. Yet within 7 minutes, you are saying 50 less science for a fluid dump is not feasible? The goal is to be thriving both during a drought and a badtide? The stairs and ladders feel like a luxury compared to the fluid dumps that let you farm in these bad seasons. Currently you are close to soft blocking yourself with how little wood you can grow and have access to.

@@JCTheBeard 41:41 Not these. You cut the ones on the upper terrace, not the lower one that borders the river.

33:21 "that way" looks a little tight for all the badwater that will have to go over there

I think we need more than 1 water dump in order to fill the horseshoe bend, in order to maximize the green ground.
You can move the path out from the irrigated green area to gain more farming done. so much path is now gree after clean water dumping in horseshoe
Great progress this time

apple trees seem like a great idea for this map, food + juice + wood all from a single resource 🦫 especially with water being so hard to build up, more valuable than ever in this one 😬

How come we dont plant the entire range of the forrester?
Maybe we could straighten out the path going across the river now that the berry bushes are dead and dont need to be removed...
Look up Skye Storme Timberborn storage for an efficient 5 story storage tower design. It's super helpful to store lots of goods in a small area.
Could you block out the horseshoe with floodgates?
Checked the metal platform, its just an aesthetic choice
you might want a small tank or two for canola oil if you didn't designate one, methinks

The thought process was to get logs quickly, and then replant with oaks once long-term irrigation is guaranteed. I guess I didn't say that part out loud
It would nice to have a mod that acts as storage for food and water.
Like a combo storage?
@ sort of. It stores enough food to feed the beavers when they wake up or before they go to sleep. Just a thought.
Longer vids I can’t watch in one sitting, I break it up..
Ppl need to learn that
Did you put a teeth grinder?
31:00 missed marking 1 tree for cutting
got it eventually
42:00 and more birch?

Quit putting buildings & paths on the near future green.
