Came here after seeing a "60 minutes" special on Tom Perkins and his yacht "Maltese Falcon" which totally blew me away even though I don't know anything about yachts. This one quite something as well. Amazing tune also.
she sails along very nicely the loads are no problem, you just need to use the running backstays if there's a little chop and keep your fingers away from the winch drums she should do around 24-25 kts with the bit in her teeth
Hi! It is Hans Zimmer,.. in a way.. The Soundtrack is "Pirates of the Caribbean" by Klaus Badelt (worked together with Zimmer) and the track is "Skull and Crossbones"
@malthus101 Well, sort of. Yes the angle and motion are tiring even in a very large yacht like this. And yet so exhilarating. It is a great thrill driving across the horizon's curve with only the power of the wind. Some are never comfortable with it, others quickly adapt, moving in concert with the ship. Sea legs. After a couple weeks at sea, your first steps on land are dizzying. As for sliding around, most of that is a matter of housekeeping and design.
Ever imagined your house being built on springs for foundations ? Not sure you'd enjoy. This boat is spectacular, but NOTHING is safe as long as it isn't lashed down. A joy to watch but long term ... ? Anything goes wrong with all the generators for hydraulics on this and your up a creek with no paddle.
Isn't it a cutter, and not a sloop? I walked along the dock looking over the toe rail in Grenada in 95. That was the first Mirabella. The first mate who gave us a quicky deck tour said another was going to be built. How many did the Hertz family build. Unbelievable numbers!!
Can I ask a layman's question? If you are sailing across an ocean at that angle, doesn't everything on board slide to one side? Doesn't it make it very difficult to walk around, cook and sleep etc. Thanks for your help!
That is because it is common to refer to all one mast yatchs as sloop if the main sail is triangular or square top with one boom. Nowadays, most yatchs above 40-45 feet can have more than one headsail furled on different stays, and no so common to rig two at the same time on sizes below let's say 60 feet, but possible. I think cutter term is more commonly applied to yatchs with fixed bowsprits.
8 years later... but not, the personal record for this ship is 19.2 knots of boat speed over ground. It cannot reach 25 because of heavy displacement vs sail area and non planing hull
Hard over under full press, what a beautiful vessel! Such things as dreams are made.

Whats the hull speed on that bad girl?
it's fair to call her a sloop, she's really designed to run with one headsail
all the big yatchs are australian
Why do people call Mirabella 5 a sloop? She clearly has cutter (3 headsails) rig...
