I’m a doctor and didn’t know about this. We are not trained this way in medical school. In fact I never even had a nutrition class as part of my training. I learned by my own trial and error and eventually found professionals like this. Thank god for the internet and TH-cam. I wish I had learned sooner though, would have saved me a lot of health issues and suffering throughout my life and maybe would have saved my dad too. I had seen every kind of “specialist” out there and none of them diagnosed me correctly, nor gave me the right advice. One doctor just told me I was fat and snickered at me when I went to seek help for period issues ( this was when I was just a student). Scarred me for a long time and didn’t want to see a doctor after that. Was never properly diagnosed with PCOS or endometriosis, till I had a hysterectomy years later. Luckily I was still able to have one child, despite the numerous miscarriages I had. The endocrinologist I saw, just wrote me a prescription for Metformin and sent me on my way (could’nt tolerate it anyways). Was on 2 medications for hypertension. My primary care doctor I saw just last summer was concerned my cholesterol and LDL was high. I have been keto for about 1.5 years. I’m off all meds now, down 40 lbs (I only had about 50 lbs to lose, was never morbidly obese). I’m healthier than ever, thanks to my own research and changing what I ate. I always ate what was considered “healthy”. Never ate fast food or Starbucks, always had lunch from home. There is hope out there folks. Listen to the right people and make the right changes for yourself. Don’t rely on your doctor or anyone else to do it for you.
As i listened to you reading this journal, you could have been reading my journal. Those symptoms had happened to me. I searched several doctors looking for help and found none. 5'10'' 300 + lbs. Tried atkins 10 years ago. Immediatly lost 40 lbs. My doc at the time told me i was distroying my kidneys with all that protein. I quit. Gained back half the weight. A few years ago i found Low Carb Down Under. Spent hours listening to the talks. Adapted what i heard. Started OMAD. DOWN 100 LBS. A1C Mid 5's. Other markers coming down. I can walk again. No problem walking 2-3 miles. Climb stairs. Lol. Prefer stairs to elevators. I am 67. Moving much better than i did at 45. Thanks for sharing.
In the 70s my father could make a bounty bar last a week! Our meals were always 'meat/fish and two veg'. A dessert is what you had on birthdays and special occasions! How times have changed.
Dr. Cywes helped more in less than 2 years than traditional medical intervention has in 50. That is a huge testament to the power of keto/carnivore/whole foods for good health. His story is no longer the exception! 🤩👏🏼💪❤️
What a story!! And I think Dr. Bernstein is 87 this year. I'm pretty sure I heard him say that in his monthly Q&A session last month or the month before. You know, Doc, those of us who are learning about metabolic health are realizing (to our dismay) how little our doctors know about real health and how to achieve it.
I can say that I was never happier than to hear my endocrinologist tell me that he was retiring. Several years ago, I’d had success losing weight with a Paleo diet (and was likely more accidentally keto than Paleo), and he discouraged me from the first diet that had ever worked for me. I don’t have T1DM, but was probably pre-T2D at the time. Several years have now passed, and I’m solidly in Keto for my health. I’m hoping that the new endocrinologist (I struggle with Graves Disease) as a much younger doctor, will have more modern ideas and training. 🤞 If not, I will continue doing what I’m doing. I have learned that I don’t need the endocrinologist’s approval, when that approval is detrimental to my health.
My endo since 2019 is excellent. He is very young and understands low carb perfectly. He checks insulin and c peptide without being asked. He treats me great.
I’m only 6 min into this and totally understand. I was diagnosed as a type 1 in 1972, 8 years old. I remember the urine testing. I remember the orange result, rarely was it blue! A blood draw every three months for a fasting blue sugar. Took about ten days for the result and any adjustment was based on that result, which was usually high! I could go on and on and on. I am fortunate as to where i am today but it is purely a miracle because it was at least ten years into it before I had blood sugars that I could do myself. That’s when I began tweaking everything because it was all right in front of me. Still trying to learn everything. Thank you.
This account is a recitation of what I have experienced over the last forty years. After religiously following the recommendations of specialists I now suffer kidney and eye damage. Covid exacerbated those issues. Keto is making a huge difference for me.
Thank you for mentioning that Type 1 is possibly caused by a virus. In 1961 my sister was the only one in my large family, outside one cousin, who would have diabetes. Unfortunately, my sister had acute onset type 1 and died 2 days after she was hospitalized for what her doctor thought was leukemia. My poor mother suffered for years believing that we, the remaining 5 children, would also become diabetics because the doctors said it was a genetic disease. My siblings and I were immediately required to be tested at home on a regular basis (I do not recall how often, perhaps weekly) with the test tube tablet method to detect sugar in our urine. Only now that we are all in our 60s/70s have any of my siblings or cousins become insulin resistant or type 1/2 diabetics. We all followed the food pyramid and standard American diet and most of us are slowly learning that the American heart and diabetic associations know nothing about how the body works on what we eat and/or take their ques from Big Pharma and the processed food and seed oil industries. It wasn't until I was diagnosed with fatty liver that I began reducing the amount of sugar I was consuming, particularly via the DAILY 1-2 quarts of sports drinks I consumed, AT MY CARDIOLOGIST'S RECOMMENDATION, to increase my sodium intake in order to manage my neurocardiogenic syncope. Thankfully, my older sister had already discovered the lies about cholesterol and I then began searching for everything about the dangers of statins, only to find numerous videos about this crazy fat consuming keto diet. Thank you for all your videos. I have a lot to learn about the ins and outs of keto but I am getting there despite having rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and taking the meds that slow down my weight loss journey.
Hats off to both you and this patient. My brother was diagnosed as a juvenile diabetic in the early 1950's in South Africa. His story did not have a happy ending, as he died at age 64, having lost both legs and in extremely poor health.
Can't wait to hear the epilogue of this story in 50 or so years of good health and fun overlaying and healing the first 50 years of metabolic battle scars, perhaps something reminiscent of a Robert S Thompson quote such as: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
Both an incredible and credible story at the same time. I am inspired to learn how to LISTEN to my body and respect that feedback. Please- more stories from your clients. Dr Cywes, your integrity shows when you talk of learning from your patients as they learn from you, and you shop at stores for foods that people on limited budgets purchase. You get it.
Yes! I was diagnosed almost 55 years ago! I did the same protocol! I was very sick... My growth was stunted and my menstrual cycle didn't start until I was 22 years old. Now, I'm 63, and a carnivore. My Ha1C is 5.2* I almost died several many times. The medical community just didn't really know how to treat diabetics and many of my "rebel" friends died because they didn't want to give up their ice cream, and pizza! I was also told when I was only 7 that I probably more than likely would ever have children or live past the age of 15. This scared me, and I was often in the hospital during puberty, which I was blamed for eating wrong. I grew to hate all doctors, because they just didn't really know what it was like to be a diabetic. Today it's the same for many docs still blame the patient. BTW, I'm 5'5 and weigh only 125 lbs. Still, I feel blessed to be even be alive. Thanks for sharing this story! Brilliant video!
Great testamony from your patient! Everyone needs to hear this, especially T1 and T2 diabetics! I have been very low carb to carnivore for several years but my A1C still stays above 6. My former doctor was happy but I am not. Now we moved 2 hours away and I have to search for a new doc. I had my former doc on board with keto. Praying I find someone. Maybe I need to make the leap and call your clinic!
Can’t help but wonder what you consider very low carbohydrate or if you are on medication. I am also challenged with keeping the a1c below 6. I eat bbbe with an occasional ketochow shake. Not ideal but some days I just don’t want to eat meat or eggs. Please consider reposting if you call his clinic.
T2d. I feel your pain. To lose weight and lower a1c, I had to eat less than 20g of carbs, no sugar, at my last stage to get rid of a stall, I gave up diet Pepsi- my only caffine fix, eliminated cheese, pork rinds and nuts. Started mild exercising. I did take metformin 3x a day 500 MG (down from 850 3xday). My a1c is 5.2. It's not easy. I had a stressful move and gained 15 pds. I ate carbs - pretzels, quest bars, diet Pepsi and cheese. So now I'm slowly getting back to what worked for me. I've been t2d for almost 30 years. Oh, I also went from 16:8 to 18:6. That's what worked for me. Find what works for you. Slowly eliminate things, add in other things, to determine what works best. Good luck. My goal is an a1c of 4.9 or 5 without metformin- its a goal. Health focus first, weight will follow.
@@victoriad882 low carb is what works for you. First get rid of junk good. It's not on any healthy program. Start with 100g of carbs ans continue to lower the number every few weeks. Thank you for this story. Family can hear this, when teacher led stories get to be suspect it seems. Emotions, when the boat gets rocked, really are challenging.
I am a South African living in England and my two children play cricket and rugby. 🏉😊🇿🇦 Thank you for alway sharing amazing information. Brilliantly put. Yes is yes and no is no. Thank you for cutting through the bullshit. You set people up for success. Well done. As my son says Keep it Real !!
What an incredible story! Thank you for sharing. I've long thought you understand this better than the specialists, and it's absolutely clear every time you share your patients' stories. Thankfully, I don't suffer from diabetes, but as an ER nurse, I very much understand the repercussions of poor glucose control and see it on a daily basis. I do my best to educate my patients on how to best manage their glucose, because it's so critical to preventing various "opathies." I truly wish what you're advocating for wasn't so taboo! I wish I were in a position to do more for them. Maybe someday, if I decide to pursue further education and become a primary care provider, I could specialize in managing conditions through diet for those of whom are willing to give it a serious effort. This has really become a passion of mine and you've been instrumental in my journey of defying conventional medicinal and dietary wisdom. Like most people who find this way of life, all I can say is I wish I understood it sooner! Thank you for everything you do, doc!
I was wishing the other day for a group who understands this and is trying to learn and do the right thing. Maybe for now this would be a good thing for you.
I agree. A remarkable story. I was spellbound by his journey. Thank you. This would be amazing to share in a regular basis. Helps all of us and reminds us we are on a journey and no one is perfect in their journey
Wow, wow, wow!!! Incredible story! We really have to be our own health advocate because I know for a fact, that doctors and medical "professionals" will kill you...not meaning to, but they will. I have my own stories about that and that is one of the reasons I listen to people like Dr. Cywes. Great story and very encouraging! Thank you, Dr., and God bless you!
My brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after an illness and steroids at the age of 7. This was 1977. A virus would make sense. Unfortunately he never had good control, ended up with diabetic retinopathy, CHF, ESRD on HD for 14 years and many other issues before we lost him in May of this year at the age of 51.
My son was diagnosed T1 when he was just 6 years old. Now 15. All this years when I say anything to his doctor about low carb diet ,, she always say things like doctors outside her hospital are stupid. And I only hear keto is bad , ketones are not good. Few years ago I found Dr. Berry , and I tried for myself what it means to do keto and then carnivor. Now I am trying slowly to help my son to change his eating habits. I remember once my son asked his doc ,if he can have sweets and ice cream,,, I was so angry when doctor said " ofcourse you can, you can eat anything as long as you take injection." Then he didn't want to eat often because injection was too painful. Thank God we have insulin pump for few years now so he east a lot . And is way better to control his sugar. But I still can't talk to his doc about low carb diet,, they trying to intimidate me and the rest of the doctors outside .
So much of this story mirrors my husband’s experience. Mumps and then diabetes at age 16 in the mid 70’s. Peeing on a pill in a test tube (results showed inaccurate levels from hours ago!) and his family doctor told him “just eat what the family eats.” (!!!) which was powdered sugar donuts for breakfast and breaded steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and corn! The medical community nearly killed him! We are Carnivores now and his health is amazing.
My grandma had type 1 diabetes and the only difference in her diet was she ate no sugar, loads of carbs though... no wonder she was so heavy and needed so much insulin, sigh. I do not know if they did any testing but my grampy did the injections after each meal. I think they just went by what worked, this was around 1960, things were very crude.
🤩 WOW! What a great story. Thank you and him for sharing. Such great information!! And congratulations to him for turning his health around and Doc for teaching us that we can be successful!! #keto #carnivore #carbaddiction
Thank you.😄 such an encouraging testimony... type 1 diabetic for 43 years... I had an Endo in Augusta Ga who had me on only 4oz a meat a day...NO NOT A TYPO....4OZ!!!!! but I could have oatmeal with fruit along with a bloodsugar of over 600 after 1 hour but then He would ask my Mom what are y'all doing????? Umm....what you said to do!!!!!! You would think that would more than anyone wake Dr's up that carbs are the real enemy.... I as an 8 year old knew his suggestions were wrong!!!!
It's pretty crappy when docs 'blame the victim' by insisting that they're not following their advice. How many times has this same scenario played out over the years where the patient follows the orders to the letter and still shows abysmal results. I wonder how many people gave up altogether when confronted by an angry doc who insists that the patient is lying and not being serious about their health....
I am already long inspired , i am sooo greatfull, that i did find it, before i am severe ill!!! And i am in my 40's :D it takes 15 years, till I ve found this knowledge.... It is not easy! But a lot easier than before, thx internet.
That story just described my youngest brother's whole journey as a kid with Type 1 in the 70's. It's a devastating disease. Entering his 50's, he's losing his eyesight and having serious issues. He's never been overweight and was a blackbelt in tae Quan do in his 30's, yet has always suffered, often due to the lack of information or misguided advice from doctors. And The insulin price gouging is CRIMINAL!
I really liked your patients letter so amazing, so wonderful he has turned his life around. Ive had similar experiences with Dr as he did, its so wrong.
I live in Louisiana. I would definitely be willing to make the trip to Florida just to get his opinion. He would definitely be my top three choice of doctors if I wanted to try 20 to 40 days of fasting.
Hi Dr. I have been listening to your lectures such as this one. My A1c has been below 5,5 for the last 5 years, and below 5.2 for the last 4.5 years when trying to score well on A1c I had a year of dealing with choices based on price on menus not throwing away bad food choices or paying surcharges for healthy better sides, and below 5.0 for the last 3 years. I seemed stuck at 4.9 last 3 years most recent A1c was 4.8. I currently meet with only a nurse practitioner or physician's assistant. Honestly, I took control of my own care and have avoided bad advice from AMA and American Diabetic Union nutritionists concerning carb addition for some time but for the last 6 months have focused on increased fasting hours and much lower carbs. I will hope to receive additional medical advice from you and do have blood and urine results for several years showing little of the markers of effects of my type 1 diabetes and good lipid results. I believe I had been an untreated type one or type two diabetic for most of my current 60 years, diagnosed with type 1 in 1993.
I just found these lovely gems of videos. So I have been binge watching. I have to watch the next ones,.then the next one and so on. I have not come across his advice on electrolytes, at least not that I can remember. So, friends, is there such a video of his to be found?
Just saw my dr for 6 month diabetic check. She wants me to start taking a statin as a preventative even though my cholesterol is fine. Just started ketovore 4 months ago.
I retract my statement. Carbs are not the enemy. I found out some more news. Its the Polyunsaturated fats (PUFAS). Dr Cywes feel free to research on that a little more.
What do people make of leaky gut and curing it with fibre and probiotics ? Im unwell and not sure what to do as I have read published medical articles, they state fruits a d vegtables encourage the good bacterial growth and if I'm being honest I can see why when I ate lots of those when I was younger I was very healthy, eating crap fast food and a chronic viral disease changed all that for me.

So remarkable 👏 thank you so much for sharing. Such a shame how much misinformation is out there. And they charge you for it!
What a wonderful story! I still have my little cricket bat from when I was very young.
So glad you were able to help this precious man! And thank you to him for sharing his story.
Amazing work Dr.Cywas. I was wicket keeper during my cricket days but feel like I do that now in the end game of medicine we play now...
I remember once my son asked his doc ,if he can have sweets and ice cream,,, I was so angry when doctor said " ofcourse you can, you can eat anything as long as you take injection."
Then he didn't want to eat often because injection was too painful. Thank God we have insulin pump for few years now so he east a lot . And is way better to control his sugar. But I still can't talk to his doc about low carb diet,, they trying to intimidate me and the rest of the doctors outside .
A very real and moving recounting of a life with diabetes. Thank you for sharing it.
More testimonials, please. 🐸
This one had me smiling and feeling encouraged!
Hugs to you , Dr C!!!!🤗🤗🤗
Thank you for sharing this man's story. An awesome A1c! I know he is thankful to have you for his doctor.
🤩 WOW! What a great story. Thank you and him for sharing. Such great information!! And congratulations to him for turning his health around and Doc for teaching us that we can be successful!! #keto #carnivore #carbaddiction
Love these real stories. What a fighter, a true champion of his own health and well being. Thanks for sharing Dr. C.
Wonderful story thankyou x
Thank you, Friend. Maranatha!
Fantastic story! Thank you Author, for your transparency. So encouraging.
@@seanfrank4158 Exactly...it's so sad....some care more about their knowing what is best instead of accepting what they suggest is flawed.
4oz is like an ant
Amazing story. Solidring on against diabetes. Deserves a medal.
"That was a wicked googly!" A favorite line of mine from the movie Hope and Glory :)
Thanks so much for these videos. I am so thankful that doctors like you are out there.
🎵I don't like cricket, oh no, I love it🎵
Hi doc ☺️ love your videos
This is amazing considering how long he has been Type I.
Than you so much! I posted this to my Facebook group page! I believe my husband and I are both lean mass hyper responders. Looking into that. -Linda
Thanks great story..we appreciate u sharing with us you are a jewel
🏏 thanks a lot Dr. Cywes.
Keto kudos from Mallorca Spain
Amazing story! Great to listen to.
Thank you Dr. Cywes! I am inspired by the story. 🦋
Thank you.
great story..that gives me more motivation to keep going carnivore to improve my crohns
Do it. We treat a lot of IBD
Thanks for this awesome Story and thanks for your ongoing effort to get your knowledge to the people ❤️
Thanks! 🙂
Inspiring me to do better. Thanks, Doc!

Don't take it
Thank you for this!
Poor guy. I’m sorry his doctor dropped him, but he seems so much better now.
Great video
Wow!
Yeah, most type 1s have type 2 superimposed from listening to their doctors.
🙌🙌🙌🙌 Excellent!!!
Take Baseball and add skill?!?!? Oh yeah I'm comin' for ya Doc!
I retract my statement. Carbs are not the enemy. I found out some more news. Its the Polyunsaturated fats (PUFAS). Dr Cywes feel free to research on that a little more.
Great 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I follow a carnivore diet and my blood sugar stays in the middle to low 90s...
I should have added that pre carnivore my glucose was high 80 low 90
Warnie has just passed, what a Googly….
What are the four pillars of carb substitutes?
Creative arts, like journaling, is one
The other three?
physical activity, meditation-spiritual, empathetic human connection
@@michelledalton572 TY!
Bummer we have to sub something. I want to just live my life. Not have to constantly cope with and manage my physiology
Fibre and fermentation based probiotics likely CAUSED leaky gut....
@@robertcywes2966 so what do you propose to fix the situation.
@@Chris-kr7gg eat a carnivore diet
What about carnivores? My morning glucose has been 105 even after fasting???
I need help. On a carnivore diet but diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia and poor kidney numbers. Can you help?
A yorker is devastating too. 🤣
Well played! Hit them with a bouncer 🇦🇺
