Weird, I have a v60 T6. I can cycle between steering modes via the steerwheel and putting it in dynamic mode revs the engine up to a standard 2000 rpm and makes the braking and suspension really tight.

As a long time Volvo driver (had a '98 C70 T5 since 2011, but changed to a '98 V70 TDI in 2017) I'm giving a huge thumbs up. I might not be able to afford an S/V/XC90 soon, but I'm happy with my V70, although I might replace it with a petrol version (2.5T or T5) of the same generation. As for the audio system, Volvo has a tradition of having great audio quality. My C70 had Dynaudio speakers and a Dolby Surround decoder (the former were standard, the latter was an option), the second gen C70 had an optional Dynaudio system as well, which made me fall in love with the brand (okay, the car itself had a fair share in it too), and after ironing out the issues when switching to B&W, looks like the sound system is great again, although I still haven't heard the latest iteration yet.
Volvo sound systems, even the lower-end ones have always been exceptional. My 2014 V60 for example really delivers everything you need and even in a good balance, whereas many new cars nowadays sound very thin and "car radio like" if you will. I can even get the bass tones to vibrate the whole car without it sounding fake or cheap. And that's with the default model with zero upgrades.
I absolutely love the graphs for the speakers being included especially with those detailed descriptions! The sounds system is super important to me and the detailed analysis is great. My only suggestion is to in the future not use red for the line when its against a black background like in the fr graph at 2:27, its quite hard to see for me. I'm colorblind so I'm not sure how bad it is for others, but I had to crank my brightness and squint to see on my phone!
Alex has the best info videos on cars. Like Holy crap you realize how bad some car TH-camrs are nowadays Like...short circuit doesnt even do car reviews frequently. But when they do, it is consumer gold
And the most incredible thing is that the basic sound system also got 19 speakers. I've been to a Volvo dealership not so long ago and listened to the basic speaker version - and it is also stunning. Not as refined as the expensive one, but so much better compared to top-of-the-line audio for my old Audi
I really appreciate the effort that went into the measurements for the audio since almost no car journalist cares about audio quality. Even when some do care about them, most of them just don't do proper audio measurements. Keep it up, guys!
I totally agree. This is actually an important decision for some people. If the upgraded stereo isn’t worth the money it can save you a big chunk of money. If it is you have to get it at purchase because most new cars you cannot upgrade the stereo anymore. So many car reviewers don’t even mention the stereo at all, Let alone provide analysis and graphs.
That sound system is amazing. Been driving a V90 with B&W sound system and it's something I have never experience inside A CAR before. The car is so well soundproofed too so on a motorway you barely get any sounds from outside.
I have a 2011 S80 Inscription and a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription and both have amazing sound quality, better than any other car I've been in. The clarity and separation of frequency ranges make picking out details so easy, and those subwoofers really make you feel the bass as a separate channel and not just shoved in there from the main speakers. Pair it when the excellent noise isolation inside the cabins (surprised that Alex didn't mention it in the review!) And it's just a super enjoyable experience!
actually my dream, attainable and convenient car, on the market right now. Drove the v90 version of this just last weekend and it's absolutely brilliant

@@trudaftgunpunk i would hazard a guess and say, that all countries that use the metric system and aren’t part of the commonwealth, are using Nm. for example: continental europe, china, japan… edit: actually, i was wrong, even UK and australia use Nm…
@@trudaftgunpunk that’s understandable and i’m not criticizing your reasons for using it, i’m criticizing the inconsistency (within the metric context) and the fact that it would be “nice to have” an on-screen conversion :)
Its a limo, not your standard short car that you usually review. Its built for comfort for the driver and the passangers. Back in like 2008 or so we had an S80; 2,5 liter 5 cylinder diesel (ate 7,5liters for a 1,8 tones), the most comfortable seats ever (we called them couches), trunk you could put 5 ppl in, doors thick as AF, shit ton of airbags. I loved that thing.
Finally sound system in good detail in a car review and that on ShortCircuit. Made me want to go to the dealership and try it. My headphones picked the bass up just fine from your mic! Thanks for the demo Alex & team!
If you try the B&W sound system in a Volvo, be prepared for every other car to sound like garbage in comparison. I’ve got it in my XC60 T8 and it is sublime.
5:40 I actually like this, trying to quickly switch gears it's pretty easy to miss it even if you are used to it, with this once you are used to it switching from drive to reverse 2 clicks is much less easy to mess up then sliding it and either sliding it too far into park or too little into neutral.
It's also how most ICE engine transmissions are laid out. PRND(L/1/2) So unless I'm misunderstanding what was being explained, I feel like that would be a natural transition from a non-EV?
volvo always had the best sounding sound system out of all cars... if the buyer ticks the "dynaudio-dolby" option that is... it is just out of this world, it is mind blowing that a car can produce that kind of sound accuracy... and then talk about those seats... real couch seats, made with the help of chiropractors, so they are made for people to sit in it...
Love my S90 to death. Wish i got it with the B&W sound system but the stock one's not too bad. Edit: You can activate pilot assist from the steering wheel, you hit right on the cruise control pad and then center cruise control button and it activates.
It's too bad the drive modes are so muted in newer Volvos, I have a 2011 S60 T6 with the Polestar tune and although it doesn't have the active suspension, there's a very noticeable difference in the throttle response and transmission when you switch it from regular drive to sport mode.
I have a polestar chipped xc70, and the chip makes a hell of a difference, the upper end torque is just brilliant and makes it really responsive to drive at motorway speeds
hmm, with a t8 you can change steering feel, brake feel, suspension, how it shifts, throttle response etc. Cant really compare to any old volvo in my opinion.
In my newer xc60 (2018 model) the difference between dynamic and comfort modes is huge. Dynamic almost makes the car feel sporty and it makes the suspension lower and stiffer. It’s definitely a huge difference - the only thing is, why would you want to use it on an SUV…
I have the 2020 Lincoln Revel Ultima 20 speaker 1,200 watt system and with good recordings it sounds INSANE, the stereo separation and bass clarity/intensity is incredible. I'd love to hear this Volvo's as well.
I wish manufacturers would stop trying to be special and just go back to using a traditional shifter instead of implementing a different knob, button, or lever for every vehicle
You know a sound system is good when nearly every car reviewer mentions it. A lot of car reviewers don't even talk about a car's sound system but it's easily one of the most important things about a daily driver, unless you're one of those psychopaths that drives in silence so you can hear all the creaks and rattles.
The reason for the two click reverse/drive is that if you accidentally slap it while driving, it won't just slam you into reverse while doing 80 km/h. And if you need to slap it into neutral, which you usually do when something really wrong (engine stalled and you need to coast to the shoulder) is going on with the car, it's just one tap away because at that moment, you're probably already a bit panicky and not thinking 100% clearly. It's a well thought out safety feature - because it's Volvo, it's what you would expect.
I don't think new cars will go in to reverse/drive while moving. But when stopped in traffic you could accidentally change gears so it is a good safety feature. And I guess you get used to pulling twice on the gear lever with time.
I have 21' S90 Inscription same color combo, T6 not the hybrid and I love it. It's nice that I don't see a ton of them on the road. My next car will be full electric though. Nice review.
@@TechnologistAtWork I am aware, my point was the guy said depreciation on this will be high. Volvos tend to hold value reasonably well, or at least comparatively with other luxury brands (depends on the area, too). 40K for 7 year old car and tech hardly seems like a "great" deal on a used car. Losing 50-60% of the value over 7 years sounds terrible, but its not that bad in the used car market. Most of the popular brands lose that percentage over 5 years
@@conorallen100 a hybrid is fine as long as you don't care for the battery which is crap anyways. 60km is like running on an almost empty tank. It still has a combustion generator/engine and motors. It's perfectly usable for a second hand vehicle. What you want to avoid is second hand EVs because those will most likely have an expired battery that you can't exchange for free.
I have watched the Top Gear/Grand Tour series no less than thrice, and also countless Motor Trend and C&D clips. This is not to claim that I am some kind of expert, but rather to give perspective to the position from which I am posting. I find Alex's takes on cars to be as entertaining (not counting TG/GT shenanigans), and more informative than the established automotive media options. Alex and Friends are able to convey the subjective feelings of owning the vehicle (communication skills) while also addressing the practical aspects (technical competence) of owning the vehicle. My only complaint with this video is that TH-cam doesn't provide the option for two thumbs and two big toes up. I always considered Volvos to be the "safe and dull option" cars, but after this review I have added them to my list of potential daily driver/fun car options.
Alex has been doing so many car reviews that I just have to say it spin off a whole separate channel for the guy Linus let it just be car reviews in general and have him be the host. Alex rocks the car reviews... Also, Linus give your wife her Cricut design channel.
I have a 2011 Buick Lacrosse CXS Touring with the Harman-Kardon surround system and it still holds up phenomenal today. Very atmospheric, with a heavy bass and clear mids. Also has the media package, so my kiddies have their little theater in the back on long rides. Looks like if I can get some thing straight, this would be a nice addition to our fleet! 👌
volvo has historically made extremely unreliable engines. Same here, an overstressed 4 cylinder for about 90k cad is absurd. At that price, I would expect a v6 or something more reliable.
@@sarkaranish Volvos 2.4L inline 5 cylinder engines were and still are pretty much bulletproof. My D5 has 560k kilometrers on the odometer. Shame that the days of internal combustion engines are numbered but it is what it is. At least electric engines are simpler.
@@sarkaranish No they aren't those are the Ford Engines they were forced to use when they were owned by Ford. The 5 cylinder that was made in house by Volvo and use in their last gen of cars was great. And today you dont really NEED a V6 you'd just push the price north of a 100k probably. 4 cylinder with electric assistance more or less makes it extremely good enough and it's not supposed to be sporty any how with a V6.. It'd be a huge waste too considering all new Volvos are limited to 180km/h.
@@DinKompis Yeah they haven't built any engines in years, but when they did they were amazing. Now they have outsourced it and overstress the hell out of them making them mechanic shop queens. That audio system is awesome. I have it in my XC60 and the first month of ownership i'd find any possible excuse to just leave my apartment, go sit in my car and listen to a couple of songs.
I dig these car reviews from Alex, especially when he likes what the manufacturer did to make it great. Been ages since I've been in a Volvo. Dad would drive me around Vancouver in his trusty 240 wagon or we'd do weekend trips to Seattle in the 90's. Kinda miss that car.

@@ShortCircuit thanks. I saw thar Linus got a headphones test head. That will surelly help with showing in a grahp how does a pair of headphones or even a set of speakers sounds. But can it be used for cars too ?
So you mean the best from the factory sound system? Because that title is either misleading or straight-up not true. There are people who spend more than that car is worth on just the speakers for their car that doesn't involve any other components for installation. Notice though I said what that car is worth not what it is selling for because that car is worth less than a quarter of what it is selling for. Unless they have a plan to give you free batteries to replace the ones that power the hybrid system because otherwise every year you're going to have a larger and larger percentage of your battery capacity drop off it's the same issue with full Electric

I have an old 2002 S60 T5 apart from fact it goes like a rocket the 5.1 sound system is superb it is also very very comfortable on any journey, the down side is 31 mpg but it’s so worth it. I would recommend to anyone considering a Volvo to get the V over an S as it is a no brainer once you realise how much space you have in the V. Great review 👍
I tried getting one of these in the Winter of 2020, they were impossible to get ahold of, even ordering was a challenge at my local Volvo dealer. Easily one of the most attractive vehicles on the road.
Nice to see Alex reviewing the S90! Not a lot of big car channels review Volvos so it's nice to see Alex/ShortCircuit doing so. Off-topic: Volvo should've kept S90 as S80 III and V90 as V70 IV. When the new S90 first came out, google only showed the old S90/V90 from late 90s that was the renamed 960. They kept S60 name instead of branding the new S60 as S70 (probably not to confuse customers with the late 90s S70/850 Sedan) so why change the name of the flagship model?
I love my S80, but I think it was an underperformer for them on sales? So they probably wanted a "new" name but got stuck with their past model names at the beginning anyways.
I have a 2017 Volvo S60 and it has just the premium audio system but it is truly as flat as you can get sound. There’s no fancy sound stage option but holy crap does it ever sound good. Other cars sound systems can brag about heavy bass or a powerful amp, but when it sounds so realistic like how volvo does it really is something special.

Steering assist should be able to be toggled via the left-side steering wheel controls. Turn on cruise control then press right arrow and it should turn on steering control, then left to toggle back to just cruise control. At least that's how it works in an S60.
I use the "drive mode" button a lot actually. On the XC 40 there is normal, dynamic and offroad (and another one I don't remember). I switch them all the time. Dynamic changes a lot in shifting, while offroad changes how power is transmitted to the wheels. But not sure about the S lineup

Pair it when the excellent noise isolation inside the cabins (surprised that Alex didn't mention it in the review!) And it's just a super enjoyable experience!
I support having the car reviews being given their own dedicated channel, they are very well done
actually my dream, attainable and convenient car, on the market right now. Drove the v90 version of this just last weekend and it's absolutely brilliant
4:09 i “like” how canadians use the metric system and then casually toss in foot pounds of torque… 🤷♂️ a conversion somewhere on the screen would be nice.
Just industry standard, never heard N or NM used.
@@trudaftgunpunk i would hazard a guess and say, that all countries that use the metric system and aren’t part of the commonwealth, are using Nm. for example: continental europe, china, japan…
edit: actually, i was wrong, even UK and australia use Nm…
It's cause we're by the states and they won't change so we use both.
@@trudaftgunpunk that’s understandable and i’m not criticizing your reasons for using it, i’m criticizing the inconsistency (within the metric context) and the fact that it would be “nice to have” an on-screen conversion :)
@@trudaftgunpunk Well I have and it's what car manufactures use when advertising their cars in my country.
I have a 2011 and a 2017 Volvo, both Inscription trims with the upgraded audio. By FAR the best car sound systems I've ever heard.
Watch savagegeese's reviews. He also features graphs for the audio system and talks about it.
I'm really glad you covered and showed how many bodies can fit in the trunk. Not many people do and it's a major factor when deciding an automobile.
I fucking love that there's more substantive audio analysis in the videos these days, those charts with eq response are gold
The issue is the lack of the polestar tune. It’s how the car should come from factory.
hmm, with a t8 you can change steering feel, brake feel, suspension, how it shifts, throttle response etc.
Double tapping the rod is for safety measures, so you won't accidentally switch the gears.
I so prefer the old cheap lever.. its ugly... yes.. but better.
Volvo have a lot of options extra that makes the car worse.. but nicer
Its changed on the new models. Only single tap needed now.
I wish manufacturers would stop trying to be special and just go back to using a traditional shifter instead of implementing a different knob, button, or lever for every vehicle
I was coming to comment the exact same thing. If you are driving you don't want to accidentally press down twice and switch to reverse.
@@amjohnson86 it doesn’t work when driving, you have to be completely stopped for it to let you change gears.
David's hair in that Linksys ad spot! Fantastic!
You know a sound system is good when nearly every car reviewer mentions it. A lot of car reviewers don't even talk about a car's sound system but it's easily one of the most important things about a daily driver, unless you're one of those psychopaths that drives in silence so you can hear all the creaks and rattles.
the nice things is, in a rare moment when I want silence it's pretty tight and quiet.
My driving school here in Sweden has a Volvo V90 D4 2019... That thing is a blessing to drive.
This will make a great used car in a couple years. The depreciation on this thing is gonna be high.
Probably still be worth 40K in about 7 years though
@@HyperSnypr I mean it's a luxury car
@@TechnologistAtWork I am aware, my point was the guy said depreciation on this will be high. Volvos tend to hold value reasonably well, or at least comparatively with other luxury brands (depends on the area, too). 40K for 7 year old car and tech hardly seems like a "great" deal on a used car. Losing 50-60% of the value over 7 years sounds terrible, but its not that bad in the used car market. Most of the popular brands lose that percentage over 5 years
This is gonna be a reliability nightmare used, never buy a used hybrid stick to pure internal combustion
I always considered Volvos to be the "safe and dull option" cars, but after this review I have added them to my list of potential daily driver/fun car options.
that sound system costs 3 times as much as my whole volvo did, and it has a pair of 80s volvo oem speakers and an aftermarket knutsson head unit
Love how NRK radio is getting a tiny cameo on the screen 😅
What I have a hard time understanding, is why Alex thinks it's hard to believe a volvo is a good car. Also he is right about the wagons.
volvo has historically made extremely unreliable engines.
@@Rmx2011 Volvo back in the day made safe, reliable, boring cars. Volvo now makes safe, unreliable, boring cars.
@@DinKompis Yeah they haven't built any engines in years, but when they did they were amazing. Now they have outsourced it and overstress the hell out of them making them mechanic shop queens. At this price point, I would expect both a v6 and a mild hybrid system, not a 4 popper with a turbo, a civic has that.
I always look forward to Canadian Top Gear.
Idk I think the Alpine F#1 is a pretty good sound system 🤷♂️😂
Great review like always though!
That audio system is awesome. I have it in my XC60 and the first month of ownership i'd find any possible excuse to just leave my apartment, go sit in my car and listen to a couple of songs.
Vibing to High Quality Sounding Crabrave on a car is now possible!
Will there be a review of the Nissan Ayria?
Have Nissan call us
I know that we have started taking it for granted these days but it's really cool that all of LMG has such charismatic personalities who are nerdy for different stuff. It makes for such diverse content on these channels. Where would I be without LMG-owned channels? I don't know. Very bored, probably. I will make sure to support you guys when I start earning myself (a university student right now) because you guys have added so much value to my life, it's incredible.
As a swedish citizen, Volvo is pretty based ;) But personally i think they should put a even greater focus on fully electric vehicles!
More focus than creating a whole brand only for electric vehicles?
the mic picked that up pretty good! felt the bass through my headphones
Alex is so easily pleased.
well done on the camera work in this video. the car driving shots are awesome
I love the priority of doing the soundsystem first but for 70-90K I'm getting a second hand M2 🤟
The m3 and M2 are really cool rn mainly because of the manual
I know a car channel venture would be a lot right now, but I'd definitely love to see it in the future.
Tidal is BS and streams "lossless MQA" which is a BS format that's not actually lossless. Try another service.
But also FLAC, which IS lossless
They also don't pay the creators...
I LOVE these car reveiws
hi
hi
nothing is more cool than watching Alex's obsession with Car's body roll and Suspensions.
Could you use anything else that crab rave ? That song is not good for testing speakers. It has no vocals, it's a electronic beat music without any instruments so you can't use it to test for quality. Can't you afford to licence 1-2 good songs ?
It's just for overall consistency at this point since we use it for most of our videos. But, we do have more detailed tests in this video with graphs.
@@ShortCircuit thanks. I saw thar Linus got a headphones test head. That will surelly help with showing in a grahp how does a pair of headphones or even a set of speakers sounds. But can it be used for cars too ?
This is like a mix from the old.. old Top Gear when it was "consumer Top Tip (yes im that old) and new Grand Tour.. and I love it!! Great job :)
I like unnecessary cars so much, I love how impractical they are and how much space they take up in public areas
Finally someone makes a car review and talks more about the sound system! Really appreciate it!
FYI "Genuine Leather" is an actual technical term that denotes the worst quality of leather you can legally sell. It's NOT a good look on any item that has "Genuine Leather" unless it's a value/cheap product (which, then, it's a good deal ofc)
Not even close to the best audio system 🤣
what do you recon is better for factory upgraded car audio
I have an old 2002 S60 T5 apart from fact it goes like a rocket the 5.1 sound system is superb it is also very very comfortable on any journey, the down side is 31 mpg but it’s so worth it.
I would recommend to anyone considering a Volvo to get the V over an S as it is a no brainer once you realise how much space you have in the V.
Great review 👍
I tried getting one of these in the Winter of 2020, they were impossible to get ahold of, even ordering was a challenge at my local Volvo dealer. Easily one of the most attractive vehicles on the road.
I have an xc60 2022, this review nails it! Well! Done!!! Keep these car reviews going!
I have a fully speced S90 2021 R-design model, and I absolutely love it.
I think the shift from reverse to drive is to mimic the shift through neutral as per standard auto shifter
And i'm here still impressed with my 05 summum s60 sound. I will buy s90 in 2038, when i will be able to afford it, realy nice car.
Please never stop reviewing these cars, Alex. You're one of my favorite car reviewers!
Graphs hell yes. Also nice to see the sound engineer getting input.
Hey there. I have a V60 PHEV for a couple of years, and I feel you when you say they try to smooth the drive (@11:22 ), but try to put your foot to the floor in Power mode and I bet you'll feel the kick.
These Alex car videos are probably my favourite thing that the whole of LTT does rn
Thank you so much for putting in work to review the audio system as well. Almost all youtubers would just gloss over it. Kudos to team LTT
THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING VOLVO OMG I'VE BEEN A FAN FO YEARS!!!!! I LOVE me an XC70, XC90, V90, I'm actually on my 3rd Volvo in the last 6 years! LOVEEEEEEE them :))))))
love this car videos!❤️
Alex, I really really enjoy , I mean, love your reviews and approach with cars! Good job
Love recognizing the driving routes. That curvy part on 8th is fun!
I have a simple petrol S90 and absolutely love it. Such a great car.
It actually does have a supercharger (just not attached to the crank anymore, it's run off of the hybrid battery now) They call it an electric supercharger, it's just not listed on the window sticker for whatever reason. I work at Volvo lol. I'm currently driving a 2020 S60 Polestar (the one with the gold brembos/seatbelts) and have the Bowers & Wilkins as well. It's pretty sweet!
1:15 “ the most refined sub bass ive ever heard”
Rolls Royce: Am i a joke to you?
Steering assist should be able to be toggled via the left-side steering wheel controls. Turn on cruise control then press right arrow and it should turn on steering control, then left to toggle back to just cruise control. At least that's how it works in an S60.
Alex is only getting better and better! Love the videos!
I've been saying this for years, but please do a car review channel already. something that is MotorTrendChannel level of production.
I use the "drive mode" button a lot actually. On the XC 40 there is normal, dynamic and offroad (and another one I don't remember). I switch them all the time. Dynamic changes a lot in shifting, while offroad changes how power is transmitted to the wheels. But not sure about the S lineup
A Linus Car Tips channel or something alike would be nice with just car content and maybe also things like upgrading current day media centers, ev conversions, stuff like that
