I'm getting one customized for my 9yo for Christmas in 2024. She saw me messing with mine and I showed her eoe's website and now she is into it.
The real difference between the gen 5 and 5.5 was that the 5.5 (60 and 80gb) had 64mb of memory vs 32mb for everything before that.

She's developed a thing for 90s alt music, Soul Coughing in particular.

Correcting myself: the 5.5 was in 30 and 80gb, the 60 was a 5 only.

I still use my iPod for three reasons:
      1. I love how I can listen to music without being distracted by phone calls or texts.
      2. The sound is so great.
      3. The UI. Before I had my iPod I had dozens and dozens of CDs organized by genre, artist, release date, and title. Also before my iPod I owned a Walkman knockoff and a Sony Discman, which I still have but don’t use anymore. While the Discman worked great I could only carry a fraction of the CDs I owned. With my iPod I could finally carry my music collection with me and with my music organized just like my physical CDs. 😀

I can understand why Apple cancelled the iPods but the fact remains that it was a dumb decision, I have a 2006 Classic with video, 2007 nano with video and the first iPod touch
The Classic is the only one that doesn’t work as the battery won’t charge.
The touch is excellent just wish it had Bluetooth

My 15-year-old iPod was no longer working. After weeks of study, I decided to go to an MP3 player ("Clip Jam") and once I figured out how to make a playlist for it, I've been pretty happy with it, though I wish they were still making iPods. Seems to me that the music companies are doing all they can to get people to stream (I hate phones, I hate streaming), because it makes more money for them. But I can't help but think there are millions of us who prefer iPods and MP3 players.

Audio Books and Audible Books can be added to the Apple Books app and synced to the iPod if using a Mac. Not sure how this is done on Windows.
I love my iPod classic and agree completely I love no interruptions when listening to books and Music!

I have 3 ipods that were lying around for 10 years+, a 5th, 6th and 7th gen. I have been watching videos about upgrading, but decided I don't have the patience to attempt, so I sent them off to a shop to replace HD with SD, replace battery with larger one, replace screen and click wheels. Should have them back sometime this summer. I love and am comfortable with my Android for music. I like listening to music when going to bed, wouldn't want my android floating around my bed, so ipod will be perfect for this. Don't have any other uses, but I couldn't get rid of them.

@@theretrouniverse sorry took me a bit longer to reply had a small issue with iTunes and ended up buying a 2010 Mac Mini (£57!) for the sole purpose of uploading music. I now have a a generation 6 iPod nano for when I’m at work and have ordered a generation 1 iPod shuffle purely because I heard it has the best sound of all the iPods but as yet it hasn’t arrived. I don’t know why I’m doing any of this but I could never afford one when they were popular so I guess I’m making up for lost time or I’m on a mission to single-handedly take down subscription based music services 🤪. Thank you for the inspiration and keep up your awesome content.

If you are referring to the software on the iPod you can still get updates through iTunes. It has an option to Update iPod. You can also search online for the update versions and install from a file too.

I've decided to upgrade mine that is still functional, but the case like yours was pretty beat up, so I'm replacing the back, the battery, and the hard drive with a logic board that takes SD/MicroSD cards. Not having to run a motor to spin a hard drive will save battery life on top of not damaging the data if it gets bumped etc. I think there's a draw to "physical" media again after Sony losing Discovery programming that people had paid for due to licensing etc.

    • @theretrouniverse
      @theretrouniverse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

yes you should totally do all that. I might end up doing that with my black one and getting a new front and back for it as well too. It's fun to tinker with this stuff. Physical media is something we all wanted to go away from just for ease of use but we don't have any control over what is available for us to watch that way.

@@theretrouniverse Well, I just did it all tonight. Everything worked on the first try. I now have 512GB of storage on SD cards and a new battery and back case. The back case I ordered on Amazon wasn't great. The fit doesn't completely match up smooth along the edges, and the back had a few hairline scratches. In any case, I have an update iPod Classic 7th gen that I will enjoy using for hopefully many years to come.

I get the whole listening music on a dedicated device, I do that all the time. I have a few DAP's I use just because when I listen to music I don't want to be bothered. My phone is more of the house phone and is used as just a phone more or less. I prefer the newer DAP's over an iPod just because they have more features like wifi, bluetooth, streaming services, (if you go for that), multiple headphone jacks, (3.5mm and 4.4mm) and better sound quality. Yes they can be a little expensive for the mid level models and up, but you can find quality ones under 300.00, some even under 150.00. Sony isn't the only other game in this world, you have Fiio, iBasso, Shanling, Cowon, Cayin, Astell & Kern to name a few. Just never really like the iPod, didn't think they sounded that great over all. They got loud, but that doesn't always mean good sound.
