i bought my ipod classic 5.5 because of you, loving the ipod videos ken!!!
Thanks so much!!
A pretty cheap distraction-free option is also just buy an obsolete laptop. If I want distraction-free writing, I'll pull out an old PowerBook that would be crippled on the internet but still works great for Microsoft Word.
I'd defo still find a way to get distracted. Pen and paper is the way to go 🤣
Just go airplane mode.
I just posted something like it. My go-to is my Thinkpad X61, running Zorin OS, due to the comfortable keyboard
Oh don't you even get me started on old laptops. In 2019 as a 2nd/5 year high schooler I carried around a HP Mini 110 as my personal school device. It was a bit impractical, slow, heavy, and the battery barely made it through the 5 hour stravaganza that was a school day, but it carried me through the year quite nicely.
Most work was simply typing stuff. Thanks to this old netbook my grades quickly went up. My only problem was that I couldn't (still can't) write by hand, so I was the lazy kid in 1st year. After this I moved on to other things, like school laptops (which were more powerful) and eventually my phone combined with GDocs. The latter is still my current setup today and I love it. My phone is kinda trash hardware wise, but I shaped the software to borderline perfection over the past 2.5 years I've had my A21s.
TL;DR I used a HP Mini 110 in high school despite being a decade old back then.
I would say you're my people - I collect and upgrade vintage Macs, and I have several PowerBooks right now - but you can easily get distracted on an old PowerBook.
My vintage Macs are full of games. ;)
"Unnovation"
we need it
I found an iPhone 8 Plus with 256gb of storage for $30 because the owner said "Tru display wasn't working." It works just fine for my music, audiobooks, youtube, etc. Pretty much everything that was sucking up battery and storage on my normal phone. Besides my iPod, it's the best $30 I've spent on tech in the last year.
Speaking of music. I wonder if Denki has a public playlist on Spotify
This video is awesome. I’ve been on the same journey to use single use items instead of the technically superior and feature packed smartphones.
It's awesome seeing you here, glad you liked the video!
They might be technically superior to some other devices, but smartphones are really terrible in terms of ergonomics!
As someone who worked in a mental health facility that didn’t allow cameras or mics the iPod was CRUCIAL. I’d honestly pay $500 for one
I have a 160 gb working just fine
@@devilblueduke I keep the nano one with the touch screen. No cameras etc. only wish is that I could transfer and sync music my iPad. Or they could make a mic less version of the apple watch
That’s crazy, I did this exact same thing a few weeks ago. Had my old 13 Mini lying around, was gonna sell it. But I repurposed it to just have music apps on it so that now I can keep it on me all day while I work from home, and my iPhone 15 Pro stays in my bedroom. I only check it a handful of times throughout the day. Combined with the Summary notification feature, blocking apps, etc, the distractions are minimal.
Ironically I recently started using a pocket notepad for for reminders, to do lists, jot down notes, etc. I've noticed a tangible dramatic improvement in all of those functions. Reminder notifications are far too easy for me to flick away, leading me to forget, especially if I can't do that task right at that moment. It's also easier than sifting through hundreds of nonsense notes in the notes app to find something I jotted down. Physically writing something down also locks things into my memory much better. And it's satisfying to scratch something off the to do list. That's just how I work though, but would recommend giving it a shot if you struggle with such things.
It's been over a month so far and has become second nature to take with me when grabbing my wallet for the day. Funny how sometimes the simplest solutions work better for some than the techy filled ones.
Alternatives:
1. Use an old iPhone with headphone jack as an iPod (my suggestion is a 1st gen SE). They have Bluetooth and you can download playback apps for whatever format you need play. Just don’t insert a SIM into it to avoid distractions.
2. Have a dedicated laptop for writing. I got me a Thinkpad X61 running Zorin OS to write video ideas, scripts, proofread documents, and such, all from Google Drive. The stellar keyboard is great for typing, and the small size prevents me from using it to consume media.
I’ve wanted Apple to release a new iPod for a while now. I think it would be amazing for them to do a modern iPod classic or iPod nano that can connect to Apple Music to benefit from the streaming library without other distracting apps (plus, I like the idea of being able to listen to music without impacting my phone’s battery). For the time being, I’ve repurposed a refurbished iPhone 13 mini as my “iPod”. It’s not perfect (and has access to all the distracting apps), but I’m hoping the smaller screen and battery life will be enough to dissuade me from using it for more than what I need it for.
Old iPods still hold a special place in my heart :)
I mainly skip on expensive tech products since now I have a better understanding of what I mostly do specially when I'm done with work. Midrange devices are now designed to almost match what top-tier devices can do and offer that it makes zero sense to even spend that much on an item you'll barely maximize the functions of. And yes, I just mainly write on a piece of paper to keep tabs of my task anyway.
Honestly I bought an iPod classes 5.5 gen for music with no distractions and I love it but I didn’t want to buy all the albums i wanted to add. Found an iPhone 7 Plus jet black on eBay for $60 and I have Apple Music and messages on it and that’s it. And then began my collecting obsession 😂 I now have iPhone 3GS-XS Max, a few iPod touches, and an iBook g4 😂
I have seen devices that that take inpiration from the 5th gen iPod shuffle and can sync offline Spotify playlists from your phone or computer and gives you the iPod feel without having to own any music.
I still use my gen 4 ipod touch and 120gb ipod classic. Both still have great DACs and i replaced the battery so they last forever.
I haven't really getting distracted by my phone as I always keep it elsewhere when being home. And on work I do not have exactly time to look at it. But my most of time goes with my PC and that is basically all of my free time. Let it be watching TH-cam, playing games or watching streams on Twitch. My phone is only for like looking some news while having break on work.
Been using the Sony NW-A306 in a similar way. I think its the perfect modern solution as its not technically limited to just music but its the only thing you would WANT to use it for. Too small to really type on but you can transfer things from streaming services problem free
great video! I really enjoy your content dude!
If the iPod came back, it would be boutique, connect to the internet somewhat and cost a $1000.
Yep. I use a Galaxy S21 Ultra solely for the Notepad/Media player purposes. That thing has all the apps disabled/uninstalled, and remains on airplane mode 95% of the time. I bought it used a few months ago, and have no regrets!
I keep an old android phone (pixel 3) with nothing on it but mp3s for the gym.. its that simple
I've gotten distracted by paper books enough times that the constant blame that phones get as "distraction devices" seems kind of overblown.
I like my single-purpose devices (ereader, DAP) not because they "free me from my phone" but because they are actually better than my phone at those purposes.
Yo playing Love Live music on an ipod is gold, zura.
I love all the anime vibe you put in your videos! Great video.
Jokes on you Ken I'm watching on my tablet
where did you get the shirt!
What I tend to enjoy doing to prevent myself from getting distracted is to fire up the ol sega mega CD and blast some CD's, it's my dedicated home music device.... can I do better? sure.. do I want to? lol no
when I'm out and about I've got my phone on me but it's also blasting music but it's something I can listen to without lifting a finger.... because it's stuff I'll gladly listen to on repeat, it also super minimizes my screen usage time.
Phone's with headphone jacks and upgradable storage need to make a return honestly, streaming services for games, music and movies were never going to be the future.
iPods are hard to find locally that still works but a offline device and just recently purchased a DAP HiBy R4 with its system wide bit perfect for music lovers
On the notepad tip, I recommend the Rocketbooks. It does kinda suck that you have to lock into Pilot FriXion pens, but then they're reusable notepads. I can clean up and start over at the drop of a hat. They're pretty expensive compared to just buying like, 30 normal notepads, but if you're not at risk of losing your notepad? It saves on waste a lot, and you can save those notes later with the app to email them or keep adding to them in all those notetaking apps.
did a similar thing, but for video games. got a Galaxy s20 for $150 and a razer kishi for $20 & turned it into a surprisingly great emulation machine. and I free up a bunch of space on my main phone lol
Where did you get your wallpaper at 0:54 min
I've been going in completely the opposite direction, replacing devices with a Fold 5 and a laptop dock. Everything is my phone now. I don't use social media and don't give a f what people are up to, so there's no phone use to control. I'm not one to tell people how to live their lives but that phone junkie shit cannot be healthy
Where i can download music for my iPod??
I mean, the hole album, not a single song like i do whit convertor TH-cam music to mp3
Do you know any web or software??
i repurposed my 1st gen se just for music, without simcard/wifi, the battery life is surprisingly good for drive/gym and stuff. oh and a headphone jack
Another tip: get a "dumb" wristwatch, it will avoid having the excuse of whatching what time is in your phone, worked wonders for me
I love this video! I think it’s super important for us to disconnect at times, and focus on only one or two things at once. I’ve found a lot more peace in myself since I’ve started reading on my lunch breaks rather than be on my phone.
For those who hate 30pin, and want Bluetooth but no internet, try the iPod nano 7th gen. It has a headphone jack and also can work with AirPods, and uses a lightning port for charging and data transfer. And it’s tiny! Ken, give it a whirl :)
Like many in the comments, I’ve also repurposed my 13 mini as a media device after upgrading to a 15. It’s perfect when I need the connection for streaming, but I purposely leave off anything not related to music, podcasts, or audiobooks.
We have a 7th gen nano around somewhere, I might dust it off!!
Bro said de-revolution
De-evolution
I actually have multiple dedicated-ish (all besides one have emulators and ROMs, as of now) devices. Most were gifted to me. My phone is an S21 Ultra that I plan on upgrading to a Z Flip 5 or 6 if it's out by the time I can upgrade, a 2020 iPad Pro with paperlike I use as all purpose and especially art, a 2019 iPod touch primarily for music and stories for sleep, a 2021 Kindle Fire primarily reading my play books library, a modded 3DS, a Switch, an XBox One, and a PS4, lol. I also just got given an older iPhone that I'm gonna turn into primarily a emulation device to use my GameSir x2 or 8BitDo Pro on, lol.
I see a lot of other people wanting simpler, dedicated devices, including me! I'd love to build something like my Nokia E72 but with maybe Android or a version of Linux, and a good camera. The Nokia actually did have a good camera, but not a modern auto processed one
I'm stuck with broken ipod, too much music and itunes as my library organizer. was thinking if I should get an old iphone as music player, but those cost hella lot. I'd probably just break my ipod classic if I try to open it.
Love it! U just earned a sub
I turned my old Samsung galaxy s10plus into my media player being able to listen to Spotify while watching a TH-cam video is awesome
I recently purchased an old iPod touch 4th gen for nostalgia and collection purposes. Waiting on delivery.
I use grayscape mode - It sucks out the entertainment part of the mobile phones but also becomes suitable for long reading times
I see the Best Love Live Album
Paperlike should make screen protectors for the Z Fold. I'd kill for a good matte inner display on my Fold 5.
Knowing apple it would be locked to using Apple Music and properly a extra expensive tier. Would not make sense in 2024.
This is why android is cool. There are a pretty wide range of minimal launchers, like OLauncher or Niagara, that has a lot of settings to minimize disturbance.
I've tried using tech for notes. I always go back to using a notebook somehow. IPod would be great but don't want to pay for individual songs. Streaming is just too good for new music and for music discovery.
They still sell really good DAPs.
12:30 ah yes, my favorite music app... Waze
I go on a lot of night drives to relax
Aunty Edna went from designing to youtube nice!
im with it. as much tech as iv been into over the years. but everything you say applys to me lmfao
Is the common theme with all tech channels something like “I no longer like this (various reasons and permutations therein), so I try that?” Just kind of like, cool, you do you then.
I currently use an iPhone SE 2020 that I intend to reset and use as iPod when I eventually get a new phone
Kentama has to come back!
Ken: It cost $650.
Luke: What?!!
Denki, the literal colonizer of technology and niche communities on to find about a niche item. He’ll destroy it by bringing the masses in the casuals to that community skyrocketing, said prices, and making the hobby no longer fun. Denki everybody !
Could you please review the moondrop MIAD01 5G ?
Best way is to just start aggressively uninstalling apps. YT, Reddit, Instagram, FB have no need to be on your phone in an app. Browser all the way. TikTok just needs to disappear. I have 26 apps on my phone in total (including stuff like the settings app, and a camera app). Really makes a difference. Phone becomes less fun at that point.
tell my friend roberto more
You wanna know whats wild tho.. having downloaded 1000s of songs only to delate them all and now be duped into paying to basically rent them monthly... they got most of us in the long run.
I actually love the song u played on spotify from girl band cry
I feel like the free write can be easily recreated with a raspberry pi
my distraction fee gadget is my broken phone on battery. but still habe good standby time. if i used actively its only can used for 2 hours. so i force to used phone less when im outside
More IPod content please🙏🏻
I want to see Denki with an upturned fringe and a more ikemen look
Apple then: WE GOT DEALS ON ALLL OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC AND VARIOUS ACCESSORIES TO MAKE A VIBE OUT OF YOUR ROOM!!!
Apple now: we are releasing the new iPhone 25 complete with every single feature from the iPhone 24 except 10x more annoying!
Crazier than Head-less mackbook
Iphone 6S plus, was supported up to October 2023. 🤙🏽
This reminds me that I bought my Sony Walkman a 50 series only for music
This is nothing to do with video but i really recommend you to wear contact lens or getting lasik
Just looks sooo good with it.
But if you are aiming to show otaku style then i cant say anything
if apple wants a foldable phone turn the folded form like the Ipad nano with physical botton or wheel.
The new generation is probably like whats a ipod? Is that spotify? Lol
The bumblebee IPod!!!
OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD
I would love to use my iPod I scored for a good deal new sealed in the box, but I did not spend 300 euro on AirPods Pro for nothing, and I'm not TH-cam rich to just not use it or to get good wired headphones. Unfortunately I would love too tho
i love the suggestions, but laterally around me, are distractions. my mind is just wired to be distracted. I have to mentally kick myself in the a$$ to do work. That notepad and pen?? I'll just start drawing. lol
Why is he talking about music and the iPod and then talks about a typewriter?
Get a nice gel pen set,
Need a big home stereo ipod that is kid and parent proof.
The irony of me interrupting my music listening with this video 😭 TH-cam is like the final boss of distraction honestly
I miss my iPods..
I don't have a phone... There I said it, happy now??????
Old man yells at typewriter uploading his stuff on a wifi and icloud
2:13 Togetoge!
So I have a 500 gig iPhone 14 Pro Max there is no way that I can even upload my music that I’ve downloaded. Unfortunately, Apple Music does not have every song I listen to. I’ve considered having a second iPhone just for music because I haven’t found a nice MP3 player just for it. 1:56
You'll need to add the downloaded music to the apple music app and sync it to your phone. If you have FLAC files, you'll also need to convert them to ALAC
@@abishekeinstein2202 thanks for the tip, my friend!
A second iPhone just for music? Tim Cook kicking his feet right now
Even though it's not for everyone I use and like my astell&kern sp2000t
I’ve got an old iPod Touch I want to just use as a music player and nothing else.
This video has something more distracting than a smart phone 😂
sometimes i just wanna listen to music without being distracted...it is more of a me problem lol
Some of the responsibility is on ourselves for sure for accountability, but all the apps many of us deem "distracting" are designed to vie for our attention at every corner. Trying to get ahead of that is definitely easier said than done 😫
I bought an old LG Phone to use as a DAP.
I love how the tail-end of millenials and whatever came after are slowly realizing that subscription services and not owning your own music is not a sustainable practice.
Let's bring back the Zune😎
phones not free
Oh......... I dont have this problem. I'm not important enough for anyone to pay any attention to what i say on the internet so I'm not on social media. Unless im watching youtube videos, I'm playing games. If im not playing games then theres not much else I use my tech for. I guess it is nice to have a dedicated audio device but other then that ........🤷
Is it just me, or does anyone else think this dude is Alvin Leung?
