  • Aspect ratios can be confusing- which one's right for your project? What settings should you use? Make this quick video to break down a bunch of aspect ratios you can use- widescreen, vertical, 4:5, you name it. Hope you learn something!

    Finally a video that targets this topic! For me, I use a ultra wide monitor, and it kills me when I watch a video that is created in a 16:9 timeline with black bars, and I get the opposite feeling when I watch a video created in a 2.35:1 timeline! A few weeks back I wanted to create a video in 2.35:1 but it was hard to find valuable information about the preferred settings, this video would have helped! Also, I loved the shot at 1:37 where you talk about 4:5! Super well made!

    Quick tip: for FCPX users when editing in 2:35.1, go into the inspector scroll all the way down then set the spatial conform type to fill. That way you don’t have to scale it manually. Took me a while to figure it out

    One of the most important reason to choose a certain aspect ratio is to choose what fits best the feeling you want to portrait. 4:3 for example can make the image feel more claustrofobic, while a wide aspect ratio is great for fast landscapes or a feeling of adventure etc. This can be a very powerful tool to portrait a certain emotion.

    well explained, but 3840x2160 is UHD not 4K ... 4K is 4096x2160 isn't it?

    • @DGaryGrady
      @DGaryGrady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The full DCI 4K frame is indeed 4096x2160 (1.9:1), though it's cropped horizontally or vertically to either 1.85 or 2.39 in practice. But DCI is a theatrical standard. In common usage people call UHD "4K" and I've lately given up arguing the point except when it's really key (which I suppose it may be in this context). I admit I do tend to harp on 2.39:1 as the modern widescreen standard, and for that matter I'm enough of a pain that I remind people that Academy ratio was 1.375:1, not 1.33 as you often see. This is probably why I don't get invited to more parties.

    • @DGaryGrady
      @DGaryGrady 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.39:1 replaced 2.35:1 in 1970 and today when people say 2.35 or 2.4, 2.39 is what they really mean. I'm old enough to remember when SMPTE made the change. It's the widescreen DCI standard as well (along with 1.85:1). Of course, you can use any aspect ratio you like, and our eyes don't notice the difference between 2 35 and standard 2.39. incidentally my BMPCC 6K will shoot 2.4:1 and because of the reduced bitrate it's a good option to use. (By the way, I wish I had Aidin's talent when I was his age. In fact I wish I had it now!)
