One of the hottest drum corps I’ve saw in years. The first time I saw them was in 1971 at a amusement fair in Connecticut. Their brass was powerful from the arrangement of Larry Kerchner, and that powerful drum line written by Dennis De Lucia. I was in awe when they did their performance at the county fair stadium. That’s when I wanted to join the drum corps activity. It’s sad that this great junior drum corps disbanded due to politics in DCI. I really missed them, what a performance they put on in the 1970s😪

None of us had any idea we were in the golden age of drum corps at that time. There were thousands of corps in the sixties and seventies. Seemed like every town in N.J. had a corps back then. The Cabs have channlled the spirit of the Muchachos music; even though there are only a handful of corps now in the 2022 the muchachos live on in their music.

The ones that remain today, are really a marching band. In my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest activities throughout the United States and Canada. DCI, has turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on the three-ring circus. We no longer have, Real Drum and bugle c o r p s, today. Today is October 18th 2022.

Was there at prelims and saw them on the field. I was with the Valiant Knights from Enid, Oklahoma. Started the year with Garfield with my sister and future brother-in-law before moving back to Oklahoma. Had a friend from H.S. who marched with Muchachao in 75 and did go to an outside horn practice with him when I was in town, very impressive it was fun to be there.

If this was the VFW Nationals in '76, I was there! (I marched in the NY Lancers, a "class A" corps from the Bronx) Randall's Island was where we rehearsed. I heard the Muchachos drumline warming up, never heard anything so loud but controlled, got a chance to hear their Hornline warming up, and I got a chance to hear the legendary Jeff Kivet (SP?) as they went through "La Fiesta" blew me away then, and 38 years later, still blows me away, to think those are "G" 1 valve and rotor bugles, and they got so much power and range out of them. Thank you Hawthorne Muchachos, you were the beasts from the east in 1976! Thanks for posting!

Former Cadet that appreciates the awesome horn power of the east coast corps. The Muchachos were truly one of the powerhouses of that era. Thanks John for posting.

I was with the Cabs in 75 and had many friends in the “kids” as we called them. I’ll never forgive what DCI did to them in 75. Still believe to this day it was all planned ahead of time. Such a shame.

I was there at the DCI finals and preliminaries, in my opinion, the Muchachos, should have won first place, they were the best, Drum Corps competing. I believe they would disqualified, from somebody in the Cavaliers, stating that they had over age members. But as I recall most of the junior course also had over age members. I know that for a fact because when you would register to compete in major competitions you had to submit proof of age for the members that would be competing, and they were fudged all the time. Who's getting who. Somebody just had it in for the Muchachos because they knew they were going to win the competition.

Back then, DCI Knew exactly what they were doing & Mac/Director(RIP) knew exactly the consequences of these touring requirements, called DCI out on it!
The Activity didn't see it coming.
Drum Corps going foward began to fall
like domino's over time. Hindsight will always be 20/20! The Corp suffered the brunt as history will show it didn't stop there.!

@@mattboland5221also, DCI was controlling the Madison Scouts when they would not conform to the GCI rules and regulation 100%, they were not giving the scores they deserve that that time I forget the exact years but it was in, early 2000 finally Madison Scouts gave into the control and started scoring higher

Based on the Intro; this is a VFW. Sposored show that would have been held at Randall Island NYC Stadium-I marched in the corp 76 through 77 horn line and remember Jeff was able to perform due to age restrictions being different in this VFW show than that of DCI-the horn charts were damanding to execute-the drum line goes without saying & the standing O's made it all worth while! Awsome Performance!!

The Muchachos were sponsored by both the American Legion Post 199 and the Hawthorne VFW Post 1593 as well as by the local Mawhinney Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Of course, the VFW Post would be acknowledged in the Nationals introduction, so this most likely is the VFW Finals on Randall's Island. I was there that night also.

In '76, Jeff Kievet was horn line instructor; not performing with the group and longer. He mentioned, he aged out the prior Season.

Hello there, yes Jeff did one show with us and that was the 1976 vfw nations. Because of his year and what month he was born in he was able to march with us just that one show. I played contra bass that year as that was my final year to as I was 21. I turned 21 in Feb. of 76 and I was able to march that last season. I loved and miss everyone there.

I remember it well... wouldn't let us break an 80, Cavaliers next to us on retreat played" it was a very good year" then someone from the drumline did something... dead men tell no tales and the living one blames it on the dead one... the world will never know... Hmmmm how did that trailer fall off the truck? Or was it a drum instructor ???? Ahh the best years of my life.

Im willing to take a guess this was recorded at the VFW nationals NYC Randalls island the old Downing Stadiumwhere the former ny cosmos soccer team played.
    Dont remember the scores.
Cavaliers took 1st. I wanted the Muchachos to take 1st.
