  • With laminated windshields, you don't want to polish glass to remove scratches like you would a piece of jewelry. First, clean the scratches well with a compound. Then fill in the gaps with a sealer as shown.

    Well done, and much cheaper/easier than replacing the entire windshield!

      Thanks! Yeah it looks pretty good- I noticed some refraction last night in darkness/headlights, but I'll be trying a few other products to see what works best. Will try some of the ceramic/9H stuff next- amzn.to/2Ll5Iv2

      Garage Maxed Have you applied ceramic coating to a vehicle before? Thinking about doing it/getting it done but I’m afraid of getting high/low spots

      Garage Maxed Out did you try the ceramic coating you linked in your comment? I read that does not do well on glass?

    Dang that actually made a major difference using that finishing pad. 😮
    I swear you were a detailer in a past life. If not at least you have a backup career if all else fails 😁

      Ha thanks. It came out pretty well, will do a vid on using resin on the chips. Probably this weekend

    Great video, thank you! That must have been a big chunk of asphalt 😂 I don't see a second video where you fix the chips with resin on this car, only a video fixing cracks on a different car. Did the resin work in the same way to fix the minor chips on this car?

    Great video! I have a question, so what are you going to do when the sealant fades away? Will you be polishing the windshield /windscreen every time? Cuz I have a few scratches on my car and I can tell you that without cerium oxide it is very difficult to remove scratches permanently. What are your thoughts?

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The polishing cleaned out the scratches, so it will be better even without the coating- that said, yes it is better to keep a coating applied. Same thing you do with wax on a car, the wax wears off and you have to reapply to get rid of swirls.

    So these were not scratches. They were just marks that you managed to remove with some polish. Scratch removal requires sanding pads like using a 360 grit and finishing with 2000 grit and then a polish.

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evren Sokmener I can assure you they are scratches.

      @evrensokmener6768 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@GarageMaxedOut they are just marks on the glass. I could use a 2000 grit pad and remove them or like you use glass polish. Genuine scratches take time to remove and need to be removed by using grit pads 360 to 2000 then a polish. Trust me these are not scratches and you know that.

      You clearly didn't listen to what he was saying in the video. At 6:20 he explains how he is filling in the fine scratches with a sealant / wax so that the way scratches refract light is reduced. It's true that completely removing scratches would require sanding and polishing so a more accurate title for this video might be "covering up / hiding scratches...", however I believe him that the scratches exist and that the sealant will have helped to hide them.

    Hi there so today rock hit my windshield but when I took car to safelite they said they couldn't do anything because it was a surface scrape.....how would I repair that at home?

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what it looks like. First, I would polish the surface with something like I show in the video. This will clean out anything in the scrape itself, and thus make it much less noticeable. Repair kits like the one I link to in the description also come with plastic sheets that you lay over the crack once filled- depending on what type of scrape, this could work well for you.

      Interesting question. I've got the same issue. Not a crack, but like you, a surface scrape that didn't go thru to the inner part of the windshield. It's more like a 'cosmetic' flaw, rather than one that needs a kit or other repair shop solution. I can feel it with my fingernail. I'm thinking a clear glass adhesive(just a drop), let it set and then polish till the surface is flat. What have you done? Thanks.

    This video should be called, how to clean your windshield. Actual scratches do not come out with these methods. No sealer is going to take the scratches out either.

      agreed. cerium oxide paste, and rayon pad is a must. And a lot of hard work and labour to remove scratches.

    What is the polishing pad called? there was no link for this.

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great call out- I just added direct links in the description. I used a light polishing pad for the glass product, and an ultra light finishing pad for the sealant. The ones in the video are Chemical Guys brand, and you can get a variety pack with condition rather than buying single pads (linked also). Thanks for watching!

    Wax on a windshield. What happens when it rains and you put on your wipers.

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This process actually cleans out the scratches so they are less visible. the wax is just there to prevent new stuff from getting in them.
