Absolutely great video! I have been stamping for 35 years and what amazed me most is that we didn't even have most of these items back then. My first "heat tool" was a toaster. Talk about burnt fingers! Be glad all these items are available now. They really are "basic".

@@bethbenson1931 yes I do..I owned a craft/gift shop and we made monthly flyers then stamped special days and embossed whatever we stamped. Used the home toaster to do that! Yes showing our age..proud of it..I will be 71 soon..happy new year

I agree with ALL of your items. Clear embossing powder can be used on top of colored ink which really reduces the need for color embossing powder.

I’m a very experienced crafter and still enjoyed this! I especially liked the tip on the jewel picker as I have the one with the putty on the end and it’s more trouble than it’s worth. I started cardmaking late May of 2023 and I wholeheartedly wished I had seen this video then. I started purchasing the items nilly-willy and as time has moved I realized how much money I've wasted. The only items which have not been a mistake are the die cutter, my 3 of 4 paper cutters, the scoring board, and blending brushes. This is a hobby that can turn to be VERY expensive in a blink of the eye. I have yet and refused to add up the total of $ I've spent to date. My blood pressure would hit the roof and my Cardiologist would not be very happy. I know cardmaking is my new Happy Place, so I will not add it all up. Again, thank you for sharing. This video is an excellent guide for us all! Be blessed ❤.

I wish I had seen this video back when I was starting out as it would have saved me buying stuff I wasn’t crazy about after getting it home and then later replacing the first things I bought with the things I have now. I made this video because that was my experience too! When I started out I had no idea what I really needed so I just started buying random things. 🤣
I have been a card maker for 25 years and I own no distress oxide or other hybrid inks. I have tried them in classes and things. I've found that I am not an ink blending fan. And when I do get the urge to do it (rarely), I just use my dye inks. But, as you said, everyone is different. I really enjoyed this video and thought it would be quite helpful for a beginner. Very thorough and thought out.

this is a really good, comprehensive list I wish had been around when I started; if I may add/clarify some things, you don't need a brush or blending tool for every color you have, but you do need one for each color family, so one for reds, blues, greens, and so on, if you try to stick to working from light to dark that is, it's also a good idea to have some for each type of inks you use to cut down on washing time dye inks and pigment inks, in particular, but the others as well, don't mix well and you should thoroughly wash a brush between types; it is also a good idea to have a brush devoted solely to white ink so as not to contaminate the white ink pad as far as paper goes the 80 lb paper is great for pencil or marker coloring or to stack behind other die cuts for dimension, but for card bases, or panels you really need the strength of a paper that's at least 100lb which is more expensiveespecially in the Neenag brand, another good thing about a white surface to work on is that you can see colors better, you can even smoosh a die ink around on it, spritz it with some water then pick it up with a brush and watercolor with it or mix some reinker or ink from a pad, or even a powder into a paste to change it's color from white to whatever you need or want, other than that type of more detailed information, this is an excellent video for beginners, the rest you will quickly pick up as you go, there is a you tube channel I would recommend to all crafters at any level;; Mary Polanco has done many videos on alternative products to use in crafting that will save lots of money [including makeup brushes for ink blending that are far less expensive] I rewould add a paper trimmer to the list of essential tools, as well; as far as embossing powder goes, keep in mind that the fine detail powders are able to nicely cover thick lines as well as thinlines and details; but regular or thick powders cannot cover thin lines or details well at all, so you xan save money by concentrating on the detai,led fine powders, if you stamp in colored ink and cover with clear embossing powder, you'll get a similar look to a colored embossing powder. heat gun can burn your paper and powder, so I would stick with a tool until you gain some experience and a feel for the process, and a Wagner tool is only needed if you do a lot of embossing on each card, otherwise, you'll spend about 3Xmore than you need to to emboss
As far as blending brushes, I agree about not needin one for every color, but manufacturering people say it is best NOT to mix distress and oxide inks together. If you are going to blend both, you really need to have 2 sets of brushes.
Although I am not a new crafter, this is an excellent video for people just starting out! It will save them money and some frustration! I would enjoy a video about different inks. Thank you 😊

Agree with your list!! Well presented. Each item you mention is in my craft room. Neither of my glass mats is magnetic. That's on my wish list. Until then, I use a metal plate make art stay tion with magnets.

Good list for the newer paper crafter. I have been paper crafting for less than a year and a half and have some version of most of these items. I need a video about getting over the post holiday slump. I feel like I used up all my good ideas in Oct/Nov/Dec.
Hi. I give the that slump a miss by carrying on making Christmas cards until well into February and that way it gives a head start on it as well as giving me a few ideas for other types of cards.

On the jewel picker with the wax tip the poking end is a great glue scraper for when glue oozes out from sequins and die cuts. You can also buy the replacement wax tip, look under nail art tools. Personally for me the black embossing powder gives me fits, no matter what anti static tool. I use black ink and clear embossing powder.

Hi. My most recent buy has been a scoring board and some nonstick scissors and you are right, they really are a time saver. I would love to know if there are bottle pins that don't start to rust after a few days as I haven't come across any so far. This is an excellent video but I think you missed one of the most basic tools that you can not craft with out and that is a paper trimmer. I personally do not use black embossing powder. It tends to be messy. If you stamp with black ink and emboss with clear powder it does the same job without the mess. You can also use any color ink with the clear powder and it will match your project perfectly. Thank you for posting this video, it's very informative and I may try some of the brands you suggest.
Thanks! I went back and forth about whether to include a paper trimmer. It ended up not making the cut since I limited myself to a list of 15 items. 🙂 Clear embossing powder is a great option. It does have a different look though so I think both clear and black are good basics. 💌

I have a Platinum which has more surface for larger dies than a 6 why do u recommend the 6?
Definitely a personal preference. I like the Platinum 6 because it is easy for me to move around. 🙂

Do you know if there is a difference between the "craft blending brushes" and makeup brushes. The makeup brushes I have are nice and very inexpensive from Amazon, but do the ones advertized as craft brushes work better? Thanks for any help God bless
Hi Anne! Blending brushes and makeup brushes are "essentially" the same thing. I put that in quotes because in my experience there is a difference depending on the quality and shape of the brush. There are inexpensive and very expensive makeup brushes. Same thing for artist brushes and ink blending brushes. If someone is selling nice quality makeup brushes at a low price and they are shaped in a way that they are conducive to ink blending, then they will work great! I have crafty friends that love brushes they have purchased off Amazon. I personally do not own any as I generally try to make my purchases from craft companies because I want to support the industry. Hopefully that makes sense. 🙂

If you are on a budget you can get a we r memory keepers glass mat at Joann’s for like 32-39.00$. I don’t think it’s magnetic tho but gets the job done. Also it is not clear it’s a blueish color.

There are definitely some more budget friendly options out there. 🙂 Something I wish I would have known when I started is that when you buy a cheaper glass mat, silicone mat, magnet board, etc. they all can add up to the price of one mat that does it all. Some people may prefer that though. 🤷🏻♀️ I chalk all my purchases up to a learning experience! 😆
Any tips you could share for people like me who use the WRMK stamping platform? I can't afford to add a hinged platform (I'd get the Stamparatus, which is more versatile than a MISTI, but it's out of my price range). Actually, I'm happy with the results I've been getting, but if there are some hacks for the WRMK platform that would let me do more with it (for instance, can , I'd love to know about them.
The WRMK platform is a great tool. I used it all of the time before I purchased my first MISTI. I use it quite a bit in my earliest videos, so you might pick up a few tips there. You can pretty much do all of the same things I do with the MISTI. The only real differences are that it’s not quite as precise and it takes up more space. 🙂

Though it does not have a grid, it is much cheaper to purchase a glass cutting board. You can see through it, so 10:21 if you want a grid, put a grid sheet under it.
It really depends on what size you want as a large tempered glass sheet is harder to find and more expensive. Also, my glass mat is magnetic which is super helpful. My craft desk is actually covered with a tempered glass topper, but I definitely prefer working on my glass mat. 🙂

They are called jewel pickers or pick up sticks. Unfortunately, the one I show in the video is sold out, but there are several other versions on the market. I really like the one from Trinity Stamps and have been using it a lot lately. 🙂

I would never pay so much for a glass crafting mat. I use an IKEA glass tabletop that’s about 20” x 40” for $25. I create my own grids and place the appropriate grid under the glass for each project.

I accidentally purchased the ultra thick clear embossing powder and was shocked when I tried to use it the first time (I’m SUPER new to all of this)! What exactly are those special embossing techniques?? I’ve tried Googling and YouTubing it, but the results were all basic, usual stuff and didn’t include that particular powder. Halp, please!
Hi! I like to use ultra thick embossing powder over word die cuts. If you do it several times you get a beautiful, thick domed effect on the word die cut. I thought I had a video showing that, but I cannot seem to find it. I do have an older reel that I made showing the process. you will find your own tools after you buy from someone's web site. Just follow the people that create the art you want to create and you will be good. Don't buy expensive stuff. Look to otherers tell you what to buy and go your own way.

This list is just my thoughts on what will be helpful to a newer card maker. Some items are pricey, but they are worth it for me. Everyone has to make those decisions for themself. 🙂
The brushes I'm not a fan of the dome. I would rather have something flat.
I started out with the flat foams. The domed foams tend blend much better for me, but I know several people that prefer to use the flat ones. 🙂
FYI...regular dye inks do NOT work well with watercolors...the ink will bleed all over. You need a permanent ink or a hybrid pigment ink. Ranger Archival is great for watercolor. Also, for beginners, do NOT want a black embossing powder. Black EP's are incredibly messy, and you are much better off stamping with a black/hybrid pigment pad and using a fine clear powder.
Thanks, Robin. This is why I mentioned we will all have different opinions. 🙂 I think black embossing powder is fine for beginners. I have used it since I started. I have a whole video on embossing powder with lots of tips. As far as colored dye ink for watercoloring, I was talking about using them as the actual watercolor, not stamping with them before watercoloring. Though you can stamp with dye ink on a water-colored panel once dry. I also mention that my black hybrid ink pad is my go to for stamping before alcohol ink markers or water coloring. I have several videos with watercoloring tips for anyone who wants to try watercoloring with their dye inks. Thanks for watching!
A stamping platform is essential to card making. I use the Hampton Art platform and the Tim Holtz as well. I refuse to support Misti, it's not at all affordable.
Hi Rita. Thanks for watching! I agree that a stamping platform is very important. Though some makers never use them. For me, the Misti is worth every penny. There are definitely good alternatives out there though, so I’m glad you found what works for you. 🙂
Re: Hampton Art Platform. $80 is not affordable to me. I would rather use a stamp positioning tool. However, I just do cardmaking for fun.
