Why We Are Not Keeping The TUDOR PELAGOS 39 | TUDOR PELAGOS 39 REVIEW

  • I know, I know. This watch has been out for a couple of weeks. But I wanted the dust to settle to REALLY make up my mind in regards to how I feel about it ( i am totally one to get taken away by the hype train sometimes :-D).
So hear it is; my sort of objective review about a watch that has been taking over the watch world lately!
Let me know in the comments down below what you think and how you would rank this would in context to the past couple of Tudor releases - would love to know what you think!
I am still unsure whether or not the constant 'fan service' is good or bad for a watch maker like Tudor. I really love their direct in terms of smaller case sizes but i really hope that its not always done by sacrificing detail. Anyways - we'll see ;-D
    Thank you for watching!

The gripes about the marketing make me laugh. These are luxury watches. Nobody’s repairing North Sea Oil Rigs with no-date Submariners any more. Good for Tudor for embracing reality and realizing that their core audience is really people aspiring to a certain kind of lifestyle.
You want a tool watch, buy a G-Shock. This is jewelry, and we all know it.

Great video and overall very helpful comments. However, I have to point out that the only reason you have a clasp issue is because you and your husband open the clasp backwards haha. You pull from the end where the flip lock is located, since the hinge is on the other side. Pretty much this way on any bracelet, ever. Try it out and I'm sure the t-fit will no longer fail you.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m a Pelagos 42 (blue) daily driver. Have a black diver on my buy list in the next 3 months. The 39er is currently one of three top candidates for me. The light weight makes it an absolute plus as the 42 is already such a joy to wear due to its presence to weight ratio.

Love the minimalistic approach, and the square markers match the snowflake hour marker, the round ones just didn’t gel with the rest. Tudor making a watch which is not just a cheap copy, but making its mark, love it. I love the submariner as this is the gold standard, but can’t even get on a waiting list, so I will buy this watch and I like it a lot as an independent quality product.

Thanks for a great review Jenni. I wandered into my friendly AD some weeks ago just after this watch was released and had the chance to look at and try this model but not purchase it. I loved the look and the restrained hue of the titanium. Before seeing it in the flesh I wasn't that bothered as I have the LHD Pelagos. Anyway the 39 is in my humble opinion it's own watch and not just a deflated 42, the sunray dial is very subtle in most cases looking a very deep black and the ceramic lumed markers sitting on the dial and not the sculpted rehaut of the 42 is another differentiator. A week or so after expressing an interest I had the call and it's been on the wrist for a week and have no issues with the clasp. I'll be keeping my LHD 42 for definite as I said these are two quite different watches. It's also a lot different to the 58, that flat sapphire crystal, no high polishing it's like the BB58 takes the inspiration from the past and does it very well, the Pelagos 39 looks to the present.

I have a theory. If you look at the original marine nationale Tudor submariners, all of their bezels have faded to a bluish gray. So while it may not be as obvious with the black variant, I think the sunburst bezel is going to give that faded effect with the blue (when they release it)

Nice to see this in 39mm, I like how Tudor made this made this more like a true tool watch than the 42mm, My daily wear watch for the past 7 years is a grade 2 titanium and although they do scratch a bit easier the brushed finish in the dark grey means the scratches a far less visible than if the watch were in stainless or grade 5 titanium. I'd really like to see someone do a comparison between this watch and the Black Bay 58 in Ceramic

HI Jenni, as always, another great video. I picked up the Pelagos 42 3 weeks ago. I have been a little disappointed in the watch. My biggest grip is with the sharp edges around the crown guard. When winding the watch, the edges underneth are sharp and seem unfinished and the bezel is very stiff. It has smoothed out a little with several rotations. I got a decent price at $4200 USD but this price point is not a cheap beater. This is my first Tudor and I am a little underwhelmed. I will continue to wear it and give it a fair judgement. Keep up the good work.

    • @TheBarts27
      @TheBarts27 ปีที่แล้ว

The bezel will become less stiff. Turn it around 10 times and you will see that it will be smooth. Maybe you have to turn and press a little the first round when you start form the firm/fixed position at 12. Crown action is a bit stiff also but this will also be better in a few weeks. Tolerances are tight with this great tool watch. I have the blue by the way. Love it!

Both 42mm and 39mm Pelagos are Grade 2.
Also, the clasp isn’t designed to be opened that way. Open it the way you open a Submariner’s clasp and you won’t have the issue you are having with the “glidelock” unlatching.
Even a Submariner’s clasp would unlatch the glidelock if you open it that way.

I’ve been torn over the original and the 39. Having now tried on a 39, and loved how wearable and low profile it is compared to my black bay, and how it does at a glance have a sub look. But why pay £3500+ for that? I do keep coming back to the Pelagos 42 and think there’s a lot more going on for your money there. It looks like something special and different. And seeing as the 39 is now the hot new thing, maybe market values of old 42s will come down a little so I can get one. The only remaining problem is blue or black!

But i wouldn't be unhappy with any Tudor in any colour way, they're all good options. I might be more tempted with the new palagos if they release a blue one. It has a slot on the bottom of the clasp to show the position of each of its adjustment points, as well as the “spring” section at the end. It was actually Tudor’s first attempt at quick adjustment system. Maybe you are thinking of the older clasps on Tudor’s Black Bay bracelets, which have the micro adjustment holes.

A quick clarification: seemed like you said that the Pelagos titanium was softer. From redditt forums my understanding is that the titanium is very tougher, tougher than the oyster steel. That said, it scuffs easily (tiny scratches) but over time the oxidation "erases" these... one can also wipe the scratches away literally with an eraser. So very superficial. The clasp is where scratches happen, because the clasp is made from steel.
