      It's a cultural thing. It's seen as a strange thing to smile too much in Russia. Some people who have visited Russia have been arrested by police because their "smiling was suspicious". It's so ingrained into the culture that Russians who deal in foreign relations have to take smiling classes.

      Hence why they were saying they had to take "smiling classes" for dealing with non-Russians. If that's not true, our media is to blame for spreading that falsehood.

    Good stuff. Interesting that despite all the chat about "hitting without being hit" in HEMA circles, double hits are massively more frequent in the fights in this clip than in a typical sports fencing match, and by a margin of maybe three or four to one.

    • @ericnesbitt1734
      @ericnesbitt1734 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yeah double hits are massively frequent, one reason is simply because you can hit back with an after blow in hema and your opponent will get less or even no points. But in sports fencing there is no incentive to do so. There may also be more due to some rules that have inadvertently made fighting in a more aggressive or risky manner advantageous. Its is interesting. hema is still evolving I wonder is this will change in the future.

    • @CountDadLord
      @CountDadLord 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that Novichenko had by far the best footwork going backwards, and that at the start of his fight he managed to get quite a few singles by hitting while stepping backwards and maintaining good distance. I think the smaller length of arena and maybe the greater emphasis on bladework over footwork in HEMA pedagogy has an impact on the number of doubles.

      It’s because he barely scathes him and then runs to score a point. In an actual fight someone would just stab you in the back (which the Swede did after he got the lucky parry). And the fight would be over and he’d most likely be dead.

    For my money, if you want this art to really become advanced, you need to disregard mutual hits, and only award points for clean strikes. Sure, it's hard, but so is the real sword art: "If it's easy, how good can it be?"

    Lame final, if possible this sport needs to focus less on hits and more on the lethality of the hits.
    Throwing your longsword out with such a weak grip is not going to hurt anybody.
    Literally this guy throws the lame hit and gets thrusted straight into the throat. That should’ve been 0 points for that one handed guy. And like 10 for the other.

    Stuff like 28:12 is why I think this sport still has a long way to develop. Why is so much of this trying to hit the opponent's body without first having controlled their sword? This type of fencing may be fine for tournament, but it's non-viable over time if these were real sword fights. I only bring in up because there's an idea out there that, because HEMA uses protective gear, it's the "real thing", but this doesn't look any different to me in character than the sport of FIE. In real swordfighting, you can't do that. And that type of non-viable strategy cost the guy the match at 28:19, and it was a mutual hit even so.

    The rule set encourages unsafe behavior. Scoring on an after blow seems to be a left over artifact from when HEMA was new and people were not very skillful. Time is gets removed in my not at all humble opinion.

    • @WiggaMachiavelli
      @WiggaMachiavelli 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, but I think it really needs to be based on whether or not the after-blow is already underway with momentum when the blow lands. If you are hit in the leg a split-second before landing a thrust to the face, in real combat of course you are better off than your opponent; from a common-sense perspective you deserve more points, though from a safety perspective perhaps neither fighter does.

    • @umartdagnir
      @umartdagnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One hit is usually not enough to kill/disable a person. So you need to know how to protect yourself even if you deliver a hit. The afterblow system is one of the main between differences between HEMA and sport fencing, and we like it.

    I think HEMA is a sport entirely created by amateurs who don't have the experience to interpret the manuals. Fights get messy for two reasons: the competitors are tired or the competitors are unskilled. Fatigue shouldn't be a factor for a bout of this short duration, because battles could last all day.

    • @konstantin3374
      @konstantin3374 ปีที่แล้ว

      One half of those manuals are straight up riddles in long dead german dialects and other has no methodology and is really just picture books with descriptions of actions without any order or context. And fencing duels are completely detached from battles and warfare, they were fun, sports and way for common folk to obtain some fame and glory to advance their social status.

    I tried to frequent some HEMA lessons around my area but I don't exactly have the authonomy yet to reach the place on my own, plus I'm having some mental issues that also brought me to have some physical ones... guess I'll just have to stick with sword theory and my broom for now but I will get back there one day

    What if someone comes in and doesnt use HEMA? What if they used a wushu move?

      If it works, it gets scored. It's that simple.

      Yes, though it is save to assume that they figured out most of what makes sense back in the day when your life depended on it. However, not all that worked and was used was recorded. In Wushu, not all swords are two sided, plus the crossguard is smaller to almost non existant, at least according to my quick googling ;) So the techniques may not work, or are non-existant. I would say try to make them work!

    guy with more knowledgeable historical guards loses
    guy who's basic strategy was sumo wins
    crowd favoring and cheering come backs of guy that knows less of this sport
    referee is a woman because we're now in 2018 or was 2017

      Why do you have a problem with the ref being a woman? She’s probably more experienced than you, both in reffing and fencing.
