      It's supposed to be pagan. In the world of The Witcher Christianity doesn't exist and there is power in mysticism.
      You should really read the books or play the games and tell me you still don't like the music.

      what is so great about the fucking witcher though? I haven't played it. or anything thats come out basically since they stopped making xbox360 games. so i can't say its bad. but it looks like the same spin-move throwing video game stuff you had in games like fable 2 (minus the throwing your sword in the air, spinning around before catching it and delivering a killing "flourish") what is with the overlap between HEMA and video games and between the less popular HEMA channels and the witcher specifically?

    I really like the way you implemented the slow motion (stops, replays in slo-mo, shows colored strike points, then picks up at normal speed).
    Very well done and much appreciated!
    The commentators need some work though (not that you have anything to do with that, just saying). They keep talking over each other and what not...

      Swordfish tournaments are getting better with time in my opinion, but sometimes things just happen I suppose. ;)

    • @DisemboweII
      @DisemboweII 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You'd be surprised how useless a sword like this would be against a rapier. What looks like a flimsy, wobbly point of metal is still able to pierce your neck or face in a second.
      Look up Portuguese vs Samurai; rapiers made such short work of Samurai that Portuguese sailors weren't allowed to bring rapiers on land, and Samurai had swords forged to be lighter with a double edge to be able to fight back...

    • @hystericalgenie1671
      @hystericalgenie1671 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disembowell the Samuria use different fighting styles and wear different armor. If what you say is true, then why weren't rapuers used extensively on battlefields? The only one that comes to mind is the estoc, but that can be considered a longsword.

      All of you are fucking wrong.
      Every
      Last
      One of you.
      Let me go through a list to keep thoughts concise:
      1. These guys wouldn't be turning Olympic fencers into ribbons, the fuckers are hitting with the flat of the blades and being rewarded for it.
      2. Rapiers are not flimsy or wobbly, what you're thinking of are fencing epees/foils.
      3. Rapiers weren't used in the battlefield because of the fact that in a battlefield setting, you have shields, spears, and many other weapons, Rapiers are very bad at battlefield situations due to how you're supposed to use them, they are highly efficient dueling weapons however.

      A hit with a flat is still a hit if it can't be established otherwise without the help of slowmotion replays (which indicates that hit is not exactly flat as you portray it). As far as we know, clear flat hits don't yield points if that's what you ask about.

      Depends, if you want to do guild fencing the goal wast inflict a bloody headwound so certainly possible with the flat. A hard hit with the flat on the head will still be able to stagger the opponent enough to finish off

    I am very much an amateur when it comes to fencing. I have no doubt I would be sorely outclassed in that aspect of competition....however, what are the wrestling rules? They seem to be an almost a modified Greco roman rules. I saw some lower body takedowns, but no true single or double leg shoots. I wrestled varsity all through highschool and finished my final year of college in division 1 going 48-2. Wouldn't mind competing in that part of the competition. What are the rules and weight classes if any?

    This will never be an Olympic sport because it is treated too similarly to fencing. If the majority of matches didn't devolve into tapping contests it might get a better following.
    HEMA is interesting and fun to practice, but the actual competitions are far too safe and dissimilar to the fighting it is based upon.

    Have to say, I think swordfish needs to change its double hit rules. I found the 3rd/4th match to be far more interesting as the fight for first had far too many double hits - very sporty and is something we should be avoiding

    • @hallowedfool
      @hallowedfool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ElBurro I tend to prefer the rulesets where double hits negate all points for both parties.
      I would also be interested to see how the rulesets where both fighters are disqualified should they exceed a certain number of double hits fare - I haven't personally been under this rule but I'd be willing to try it because I think the reasoning behind it is sound.

    • @ummonk
      @ummonk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, both fighters made risky attacks with little concern, and their footwork was very bouncy as well - well-suited for a gym floor but not really for a realistic floor.

    • @alpenjon
      @alpenjon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely disagree.
      Not all doubles are the same. E.g. if you go out of a simple bind just to hit the opponent on the leg, the opponent will stab you in the chest/head (if he's mentally present). I think it is just that this will set you back one or more points.
      If you count all doubles the same you won't be punishing such attacks. Also, when you see that your opponent is hitting one of your vital areas (chest/head), e.g. with a Schielhau, instead of parrying you just throw in some cheap double at the legs to nullify a perfectly proper and well earned point.
      Punishing doubles after a certain number will lead to extremely cautious and defensive fights, where you stay at a distance and go in for a quick thrust or snipe the hands or legs. A contest of Zwerchhaus will be much too risky, and so will be a multitude of other, mostly some of the most interesting techniques.
      Also, there is no precise border between a double and a slightly delayed afterbow. To complicate things, this also depends on whether you count the initiation of the movement or the actual hit. Punishing doubles will lead to less afterblows, as depending on the speed of the opponent (which is impossible to predict), your current movement might be an afterblow or a double. I think afterblows are vital, as it demonstrates that you didn't just go for an opening while leaving yourself vulnerable or unable to parry.
      For such reasons, I think factually making no difference between afterblows and doubles in relation to scored points makes a lot of sense. It also has the great benefit of less analysis, work, and subjectivity by the judges.

    I have to wonder what was considered a hit back when these weapons were actually in wide use. They had tournaments back then, obviously, so I wonder if the hit had to be more solid. They don't have the sort of assistance technology some of the bladed sports do in the modern era.
    Perhaps it is my inexperience, but I have to wonder how many of these tap hits would actually have done actual damage in battle, when mail and gloves and armor were in play.

  • @hemmydall
    @hemmydall 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I know HEMA is sportsy, but I don't see how half of the hits on the head would do anything to anyone in a real fight. I think the styles and movements get weakened by going for points rather than whats effective.

      There's a difference between "Bloßfechten" and "Harnischfechten" +Ryan Showalter.
      These strikes _are_ lethal if not for the blunts and the protective gear ('cuz, it's sportsy and all).
      The technics for fighting an opponent in [historic] armor are a completly different beast and not so popular (yet?).
      I think Longpoint features some Harnischfechten in the tournaments. For some examples I'd like to refer to Hammaborg. You'll find plenty on YT if you want to know more ;-)

      Sharp 1.5kg of steel hitting you on an unarmoured head in a real fight (these tournaments siulate unarmored combat)? Yeah... They would
      There are advantages and disadvantages to the tournament fighting and you can find many discussions on the matter. Care is being taken to try not to make the tournaments too 'sporty' so they still attempt to resemble what they might have looked like historically.
      There are arguments against these events and the 'sportification of HEMA', as it were, but I assure you that strikes to the head are not one of them

    • @iacopoiacoponi1983

    • @ViciouSExorcisT
      @ViciouSExorcisT  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As annoying as it is, it's not like participants are doing it on purpose - more strict rules could help, but I believe the problem comes from the techniques implemented in the binds from both(!) fencers.

    • @alpenjon
      @alpenjon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree, punishing doubles has its own drawbacks that can complicate and distort everything even more, leaving e.g. to very defensive fights where you tend not to go into close-in combat (a double while doing Zwerchhau vs. Zwerchhau is often just a matter of difference in intiative, speed and angles). Fencers instead stay at a distance and look for a quick cut or thrust and retreat. Looks more like modern epee fencing then (I'm saying this with no judgement involved). I think this fight and the utilized styles are only a temporary development in tournament longsword fighting, especially because they both didn't clearly prevail against other fighters in the previous fights. Also, at least 2 thrusts to the mask were not seen at least by the judges (which is understandable due to the speed and follow up motions). At some point, you'll have to use counters to the Zwerchhau, and they do exist. They just take quite an amount of skill to do against someone as quick and cunning as Michel.

    I think a cool idea for a sort of tournament would be a mixed weapon tourney. So you would enter with whatever weapon you choose (perhaps limit the length and maybe put some safety regulations so no sledgehammers and such) and it would be randomly selected who goes against who. I think it would be interesting to see all the different weapon types and styles clash, and how people react. Who agrees?

    Wow.... the judges were wrong so many times..... why dont they just use video to determin the outcome of the match instead of outright judge wrong

    • @gurkfisk89
      @gurkfisk89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using video has it's advantages. But there are some drawbacks too. And I think that the largest is time. It will take a lot more time to go over video than to simply call it as it happens. Most events are struggling with tournaments taking too long time as it is.
      As it is now, some judges simply don't see the action because the fighters are in the way. That's why you need two people to see you score and not all of them. Similarly, if you used video you would need at least 4 differnt cameras and hope that by studying all of them you understand what really happened.
      With video the outcome would perhaps be more correct. However, even with the system today with judges that has a hard time to see what happens, and are indeed in many cases simply wrong, I think it's very uncommon that the outcome of the match would be different.
      As long as the judges are equally wrong when scoring the two fightes, it will even out in the end. =)

    I'm writing a fantasy story, and one of the characters is a sports champion.
    I told my people about him, "think, Tiger Woods, or Roger Federer... he's huge at what he does", and this, actual swordsmen in their actual turf, is really different.
    this is not a show for the audience.... this is people practicing their sport, and letting the audience in on it, and sharing it with the audience.
    they could easily do it without the audience, and it would still count.
    they still put muscle and wit into it, and they get tired the same, without the hero worship.
    that's something worth writing.

    This exchange decided the match but I am wholy unconvinced that would do any serious damage, let alone award 2 points.
    It would likely cut an unarmoured opponent but c'mon. There was hardly any contact at all.

    • @ViciouSExorcisT
      @ViciouSExorcisT  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have to agree, but as the head is considered to be an imporant target (...) I suppose awarding 2 points makes sense, since you need to award something anyway and it comes down to either (as an option) deducting one point with this whole "superficial cut" point of view, or awarding two points, as the sword reached it's target even though it wasnt a knockout strike. That being said, we all should agree that if judges will start bending rules on the go during the match it will not lead to anything good, but, having a discussion here in the comments - that's what this whole recording was made for.

    • @jeorhan1262

      I believe it's important to acknowledge the hit if it inflicts a damage that could result in blood being spilled. Why? Rules for many of the last swordfights at the end of the fencing era were till the first blood (with most exceptions coming from France and Italy as I can recall).
      Nevertheless, I do appreciate the fact that a clear body hit is more satisfying to watch. :)

    • @zaganim3813
      @zaganim3813 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      what looks like "barely touvhing the wrist" is a quick snapping motion and all it takes with a sharp sword to cut the tendons clean if you are unarmoured. cutting the thumb is also devastating as the thumb is the most important finger for even holding the sword.

      The Federschwert, or Feder sword, is a training sword that was used in Fencing schools during the Renaissance. Perfectly designed, the Federschwert served to safely practice full speed combat among practitioners, while reducing the risk of injury. The Federschwert greatest attribute is their similar weight and balance to real swords of the same period. The Federschwert is shown extensively in the fighting manuals of the 16th century, particularly those of Paulus Hector Mair and Joachim Meyer.
