  • UPDATE 5th July 22 -- I had a small service and the ECU updated firmware with the nice folks at Brighton Moto. The bike now runs REALLY well. the fuel issue between 2500-3500rpm is now totally gone and the bike feels awesome. Like a different machine.
UPDATE 5th July 21 that is a nasty surprise. Just received an invoice for VAT and Import duty for my pipes which arrived 20ish May.
Moto Guzzi V7 850 2021 Short slip on Mistral exhaust pipes 220521. In no way a mechanic, I managed to fit the short slip ons. Compare the stock exhaust pipes and the Mistrals with and without DB Killers. It chucked down with rain so the testing was cut a little short. Hope you like it.

Sitting in neutral and blipping the throttle shows nothing. Most videos don’t show riding by.but yours did and it’s greatly appreciated. The V7 sounds so much better with the Mistrals.

    Great video David !
Having a V7 850 with Mistral exhaust I am a supporter of dB killers in. The sound is already great (for me 😊) and definitely not to loud for neighbours and people around. I have also to add that Mistrals are giving the Guzzi a more untamed nature with more character and charisma (understand defaults : vibrations and lively idle 😊) and a nicer look (shorter exhaust)

I have a Yamaha 650 dragster. Took the baffles out standard exhaust, adjusted the carbs , performance air filter.
Man does she sound sweet, nothing like an unrestricted V twin .
Mind you I live in Hungary so no noise police.
I would always go straight through pipes on a V twin but then again it all depends on the laws of the country you live in 😊👍

Motorcycles are defined by their stance, and their acoustics, at least for most people.
In your bike, the DB killers out makes the best fit. I find the stock pipes appealing if you ride in a big city since its pleasing to most people. I am sure that is the actual intent of the designers. However, the rumbling resonances is irresistible, a lovely mechanical music
adding an special character to the machine.
Thanks for posting this fine video.

Great video and review! I like the sound with the DB killers out because it's less raspy... I like the deep mellow sound. I have a 2018 V7III Special with long Mistrals. The motorcycle has just under 18,000 miles now, and I've had the Mistrals on, DB killers out, for 16,000 miles. It's never too loud, and it hasn't impacted performance, positively or negatively, except the Mistrals feel much lighter than the stock mufflers. It's a great modification and well worth the money. I love the craftsmanship of the Mistrals, and they still look new two years later.

Dave, great job demoing these. Just taken delivery of a Stone so, of course, am thinking about it. The stock sound above tickover is a bit turbine like so the Mistrals are a definite improvement and the stock exhausts are the only element of the bike I’m not so sure about looks wise, so a no brainier really...except for that price tag! PS. Does everyone get a t-shirt? PPS. I like your side bag and am wondering how it is attached?

Thank you Derek. Interested to hear your thoughts on your new bike. Good huh? I agree that the whine is a bit of a drag and the Mistrals do do away with that for sure. Not sure about the t shirt but for the price one would like to think so! The side bag is actually an old Think Tank mirrorless mover 30i which has a belt loop all the way along the back. I undid the front grab bar and slipped it on there. It's not waterproof but works well for bits and bobs

HI David - I have watched many a video doing various bike gear/add on comparisons and I have to say yours was (like the lager) probably the best I have seen. It was honest and to the point and with no soppy extra superlatives thrown in or pointless plugs. An excellent and honest appraisal. I am just about to place my order an 850 special. If you don't mind me asking what was the cost of the upgrade and how much of an ouch was the import duty? I'm UK based too. Also is it easy to remap the ECU yourself? or should I ask the dealer to do it all before I take delivery?
P.s I also have an Enfield 500 Single - Bullet Classic with an after market pipe on and boy does that really fart !

    • @davidberman5121

Hey Mel. That is very kind of you to say. Thank you. I believe I was the first in the U.K. to get the Mistrals so they came from the factory and cost about €500 off the top of my head. The import duty and rip off charges were about £100-£130 I think. Can’t remember exactly. You can get them from the U.K. now and your dealership should be able to supply and fit I guess. I think there might be a fuelling issue with the bike generally as I have seen some posts on Facebook groups (V7 U.K. being well worth a join) that have reported the issue even with stock. It’s a euro5 thing I think. It’s nothing deal breaking as the bike is phenomenal in my opinion but I certainly have a flat spot at about 3500rpm. Some say it is a ‘breather pipe’ modification that sorts it out. I’ve not tried that yet. There isn’t a remap available yet as far as I am aware but there will be one soon. David.

What a sacrifice you make for us David! Getting your bike mucky and both of you soaking wet - I do hope we appreciate it.
Regarding using them with baffles out - definitely the best noise. The fuelling would worry me a little though - they might be a little too free-flowing. My girlfriends Dad had a similar issue with the Triumph Peashooters on his 865 T100. They sounded great (including some nice pops and crackles on deceleration) but the pick-up suffered quite badly and we worried about the long term affects of an over-lean mixture. The bike got hotter too and being air cooled (like the V7) there was concern over heat dissipation. The answer might be a power commander - but you've already spent a lot of money ;-)

Hey thanks bud. all this and no adverts popping up! haha. I was totally soaked and Mrs David had an umbrella and a car to drive home in!
I shoot videos for a living so it is really nice to be able to do some for fun and try to help out some folks.
Since the review I have been in contact with Mistral and the great MG dealer near me in Brighton UK as i experienced some less than perfect ride dynamics on a 100 shakedown last weekend with the baffles in. They both suggested a battery disconnect for 15 mins to reset the ECU. I did that and had a shorter ride yesterday morning. It all felt quite a bit better. Baffles out and you will certainly need a remap and that is what Mistral confirmed but, I have reached a conclusion that the baffles in is a much better sound for my environment, lots of small villages and horses that I don't want to piss off. The bike sounds superb with them in and the smaller pops on a trailing throttle with a very slight input are just about right. its a bit more throaty without being obnoxious and overstated.

@@davidberman5121 Thanks David for your prompt reply to my comment. We've booked a test ride today on the V7 at our local dealer who are Midland Scooter Centre. We're (myself and Kels) both looking forward to it very much. They haven't confirmed the booking yet but hope they do this morning. We were initially considering the V9 Bobber but the reviews say that fat front tyre really spoils the handling. Tried a Triumph Streetmaster but the seat is both over-firm and too narrow for comfort. I did like the torque and sound of the latest incarnation of the 900 WC engine though. Sadly, dealers have no stock till October and I don't want to buy a bike right at the end of the biking season. Plus, the Guzzi is a little less mainstream which I like. In terms of character - I've had both the 1150 and 1200 BMW RT's so I'm expecting something very similar with the V7.?

    • @davidberman5121
      @davidberman5121  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@PhilipBallGarry I had a 2010 BMW RT for years. The longest I have ever owned a vehicle and absolutely loved it. I find the Guzzi has so much character and that superb engine feel of the torque twist and shimmy. I also considered the triumph scrambler and some other variants but the chain and other things changed my mind. I had a mk1 V7 a few years back and the size, charm and ease of the ride was something that i kept in my head. I kept the RT as I thought I would be commuting more and crossing continents with my buddies but things change and I started to find the RT just a bit too big and unwieldy for my use. I don't think I could have found a better bike for high days and holidays. It's no rocket ship, but that's fine. Up to legal speeds it is more than adequate. For overtakes it is fine for looks? I don't think it can be beaten. I have had 150 mile rides without arse ache and find the seat comfy and leg position spot on for my 5'10 29inch inside leg. Our test ride on the Moto Guzzi V9 Stone (black).
      Well, it was certainly "interesting".
      First the good bits.
Thumbing the starter button (not the mode switch - idiot) the whole bike trembles a little and turns over more than I'm used
to and definitely reminds me very much of my air cooled boxer twins. Then it starts and in my head I'm Doctor Frankenstein shouting
"It's alive!". Then Boris sits quivering and ready for adventure. And now I'm thinking of the Gene Wilder film of the same name as we
climb aboard "Putting on the Ritz". Gentle clunk into 1st I stab the shift lever a few times to make sure (it's not too positive)
and away we go. The Guzzi is exactly as promised, a living, breathing thing so genuine to it's roots. There's plenty of power and 6th gear
      is a true "overdrive".
      The not-so-good.
This particular demonstrator had a fuelling issue at low revs in 1st gear (to be fair, we were warned about it), surging and threating to
constantly cut out. I rode around this of course with plenty of coasting and clutch slipping but it made it almost unrideable at low speed.
The seat - though comfortable was too short for two-up riding and the suspension set-up was too firm - we were unceremoniously
bucked out of the seat many times over our hour long test ride.
Neutral was difficult to engage and several times lied to me. Letting out the clutch (cautiously) the neutral indicator would wink out
and the bike would move forward - clearly not neutral at all.
The fuel consumption was reporting 199 mpg and the average speed indicated was 130 mph - clearly a gremlin or two.
The black exhaust covers on this almost new bike had already faded to a dark grey which spoiled the look somewhat.
We were really disappointed as from the moment the bike started, we were already smiling with delightful anticipation at a bike which
promised to be true to it's roots, improved a great deal but not ruined by being sterilised, too modern and too perfect. We really wanted
to like this bike (sad emoji).
The dealer promised to give us a call when the bike is sorted so we can have another go.

Great video. Really like your way of testing the difference. This makes it so much easier for all the rest of us considering them!
A note on the throttle response without the dB-killers, this is most likely due to increased air flow (less back pressure) which would run the engine leaner in stock ECU-mapping. As Euro5 is already pushing the mixture towards the leaner side for emissions standards, you ought to consider getting the ECU(fueling) remapped by a professional if you do choose to run without the DB-killers. An engine that runs too lean can cause serious problems in the long run.
In fact, you can already feel the lean mapping around 2500-3000rpm in stock configuration - typically felt as a very slight hesitation - , so take that as a "benchmark" for your considerations.
Again, thanks a ton for a great video!

Cheers for the review David. You've reminded me why I have left the UK for the third time in 30 years! The first shots with the good weather were gorgeous, then it started lagging it down and that just brought back some nasty memories. Onto more serious business though - you also reminded me about playing about with exhausts. I remember fitting a full race Yoshimura set up to my 1987 Suzuki GSXR 750 (yes, the old slabby-sided widdowmaker!) It made a complete mess of the carburation. If you radically alter one side of the intake / exhaust equation, you've got to balance the other side. I'm sure there must be some sort of injection mapping to match the baffle-less option. Perhaps Mistral could oblige? I literally just paid for a brand new Centenario edition V7 - I was umming and ah-ing between this and a brand new V7iii in black with a sizeable discount but between my wife, the salesman, and another customer hanging around the showroom who'd traded in his V7iii for an identical V7 Centenario, they morally battered me into going for the more expensive model. There's no money in the bank now for exotic pipes, but that'll be on my list as soon as I can afford them. Biking is all about the sensations and I remember close to 25 years ago when I stuck some carbon-fibre megaphones on my Ducati 900SS, it really brought it to life! Enjoy your ride mate.
