    Issues can arise at any time and you should never feel bad asking for help no matter what your experience level is. I got the assistance of @MarkShelleyAquatics and am grateful for the advice he provided me with.

    Test KH if you haven't already! My planted cherry tank apparently gobbles up carbonate, which can lead to KH crash and subsequent pH swings. It's weird because my GH is hard, so I worried the water was at risk to become overmineralized, if anything!
    My colony had the same symptoms after I switched to RO water for top-ups, which apparently led to even faster KH depletion. I lost all the original breeding adults, one at a time, although thankfully shrimplets survived. I started adding crushed coral to the substrate for KH buffer, and the babies matured and started reproducing. Now I add more whenever I have an adult die unexpectedly, or notice the little pile of coral bits has mostly dissolved.

    Do you have an air stone or a sponge filter? Adding them might help if you're worried about oxygen levels

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just a hang on the back filter. I removed the baffle on it so that water actually flows outward instead of it acting like a waterfall. You learn as you go. If it truly was an oxygen issue, then I just need to stay on top of removing the floating plants so they don't build up like this. The Pearlweed also floating at the top did not help either because the floating plants would never have been able to move about if there was a flow.

      Those are Ramshorn Snail eggs. They're harmless.

    I set up a new tank a month ago with 35 neos moved from another tank at another house. I've lost maybe 15 adults so far but have otherwise successful moults (witnessed one myself!) and everything in the tank seems to be good. I've had one shrimp berry, she's been looking after 'em for a week or so now - I'm worried the shrimplets will not make it if she survives long enough, however I am also hoping that they will be adapted to the tank. Basically, same issue here unfortunately. I don't know if it's something to do with the hardness of the new house as it is rather high even though it should be the same as the last place (I never tested hardness prior to this house as never had a single issue), otherwise all other readings come back within same parameters, leaving me wondering if I'm introducing higher quantities of copper due to the plumbing in this house. Also curious as to whether or not I've contaminated the water being a dirty bastard. I want to get some DI or RO as I feel I need to bring everything down slowly and I only lose water to evap.
    Gonna see what you do and see if I feel any of it is worth a go to save my colony.

      How long did you wait after setting up your tank to introduce your shrimp? Today I did another slight water change and added some Seachem Safe (higher concentration than Prime) and so far things have been looking good but I'm going to wait a few weeks before I think about adding any new shrimp to the tank. I also stopped feeding them for this week and will resume on Monday. These are all tips that were provided to me shrimp keepers/breeders that are more experienced than me.

    This also could be oxygen loss if you only have a hob and thick Matt of floating plants but who knows doing what you did was the right call

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I put back some floating plants but I removed the Pearlweed mainly to get an idea of how many were actually left in the tank. Once things settle down, I'll plant some stems in the background.

    do pearlweed grows as a floting plant? or do i need to add it to the reiver sand?

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Pearlweed can be floated or planted into the substrate. It is fairly easy to grow when left alone to grow vertically. If you keep trimming it, it will grow horizontally.

      I never plant my pearl weed. Love it as a floater

  • @brantonlightcap
    @brantonlightcap 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How old were the shrimp ? Old age could be a factor. Also if I had to guess it was not enough gas exchange because of the dense surface vegetation.

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They ranged in age as they were taken from my other two tanks and placed into this one. I was thinking the same in regards to oxygen issues but I also wanted to make sure that there were no sick ones that could have been infecting the others or possibly a foreign chemical contaminant as it's very easy sometimes to forget to wash your hands / arms before doing any maintenance.

    • @brantonlightcap
      @brantonlightcap 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shrimplycanadian I agree it’s hard to remember to make sure hands are clean. Almost equally hard to make sure they are rinsed enough to have no cleaning containments left either. I run into this with my kids always wanting to help me with the tanks. I have to make sure they rinse the soap or whatever they’re using to clean the hands off really well. I hope you’ve resolved the issue, and I hope all the cleaning isn’t too big of a shock to the system

    I honestly use disposable elbow gloves because I seen too many videos on foreign substances entering the water from our hands plus I have dry split hands and don’t want the water hitting them it’s a scary thing to happen I really hope it works out

      It's why I always wash my hands with foam soap and rinse them well before feeding or handling anything in the tank. Totally sympathize with your dry hands. Mine often split too. Might use gloves then like yourself.
