Btw, I apologise for the blurred clips - the video was copyright claimed for shots from the Mario Movie trailer.

My thoughts were exactly the same, a good silent protagonist is possible if the movie around it supports him.
But also went to movies where the protagonist did speak a few lines but didn't do the narrative of the story. And how the games do it with Navi. But then they need a cgi fairy the entire time which I would hate.
They could do a Keaporu Geaboru intro let him explain the story, and be a guiding role which he normally takes. And in between narrate like how he observes from a far.

If they go with the "man of few words idea", I think they have a bigger chance of getting the most out of Link's casting.
Instead of using big actor names, they could search for someone who:
      - looks EXACTLY like Link
      - is great at acting through expressions (no need for "talking" experience or memorizing lines)
      - can do stunts well (so that scenes are more dynamic with less need for camera tricks)
All other characters (like Zelda, companion, etc) can be a traditional/well-known actor, as long as they're good and look like the character.
But I want a Link whose specialty is doing really good stunts in the action scenes.

The apprehension around the movie is super valid. There's so much nuance to the zelda feel that would be impossible to replicate unless youre deeply familiar with it. It's a hero's journey but not focused on character development. It's inspired by medieval europe but uniquely Japanese. Its silly but not Mario silly, and serious but not Western RPG serious. The stories are all similar but distinct, so it can't be a mishmash of elements from different games, but choosing the story from a single game would also feel odd. It's such a tough balancing act, so we do really just need to wait and hope that it does the series justice.

They really risk ruining Link if they give him too much of a personality. I hope they choose a story like the child timeline, after Majora’s mask, but make Link somewhat peripheral. Like, maybe the main characters are a group of kids from one of the towns who go on a quest to help the (adult) hero of time, only to find out that the quietest kid in their friend group has been hiding a secret, that he is actually the same hero, as a child.

Regarding Link and his dialogue, one of my favorite films ever, Soldier, has a main character who speaks less than 100 lines during the film. Kurt Russell nails that role, speaking with his eyes and actions. If they can find someone on that caliber, I think a film of a man of few words could work. But it might be difficult to find someone like that in modern era.

See, that’s the thing I’m thinking of. If I were to direct a movie based on a Valve game like Half-Life or Portal, I would make it so the protagonist doesn’t altogether directly speak, but they can definitely produce onomatopoeic sound effects to show how they’re feeling in a given situation, like if they’re hurt or confused
Edit: Maybe onomatopoeic isn’t the best term to describe what I’m thinking, but I can’t think of any other proper term

Guys in movies you NEED to make the protagonist speak otherwise it becomes impossible for the audience to relate to what they're going through if the story involves several characters who constantly interact with them imparting information and delivering dialogues which they expect will force the protagonist to reply back to them. It's why Mario became so talkative in the Mario movie despite barely saying anything within the games outside the stock "mamma mia!" or "let'se go!". Wether you like or not Link is gonna talk out of _necessity_ for the movie plot needing him to talk.

Think we all thought an anime style would be the perfect first choice for a Zelda film. But I believe if Nintendo is now deciding to do a live action they honestly believe it will work or I honestly don’t think they would risk trying to develop it.
So after seeing the Mario movie I’m hopeful this will turn out to be a great film as Zelda is my favorite game series.

I have what I believe to be a good story plot:
Link is a teenage boy living/working as a stable hand at Lon Lon Ranch. A couple months to a year before he began working at Lon Lon Ranch, Link lived with his parents on a small piece of farm land; before that few months to a year time a fire burns down the house and farm with Link being the only survivor. Talon, who happens to have been a friend of Link’s father, takes Link in to live with him and his daughter, Malon, on their farmland.
Link and Malon quickly form a strong bond. Link also bonds with one particular animal on the farm; a chestnut colored, white-maned, mare named Epona. Link and Epona form such a strong bond over their time together that Link often chooses to sleep in the barn next to Epona, with Malon sometimes sneaking out of the house at night to go and hang out with Link and Epona in the barn. In the movie they could show a timelapse sorta thing where it portrays Link, Malon, and Epona spending lots of time together.
Fast forward to the present time and Link and Malon have grown to share romantic feelings for each other but they don’t share this fact with the other yet. One day, Link accompanies Malon to Castle Town to sell Lon Lon Milk, and there Link hears about a rise in monster activity across Hyrule from villagers from across different settlements of Hyrule who take refuge in Castle Town after their homes and villages and towns have been burned to the ground. Villages, towns and farms across Hyrule are being attacked and burned to the ground as monster forces make their way to Central Hyrule.
Inside Hyrule Castle, Princess Zelda wakes from having a vision of a hero clad in green facing off against a terrifying being. Zelda and her Captain of the Royal Guard and advisor, Impa, discuss the dream and the rise of monster activity and begin to suspect that Evil Forces are at play and they must find the Hero. They discuss this possibility as Zelda holds a uniform in her hands; a green tunic and a green pointed cap. Zelda and Impa decide to hold a tournament; specifically a tournament created in the hopes of finding the Hero within the event.
Link finds out about the tournament, and despite not really knowing how to wield a sword, he enters. Link is driven by a desire to protect his new life at Lon Lon Ranch; to protect the land and woman he loves. During the tournament, Link’s Triforce piece appears and Zelda notices it and informs Impa and tells her to bring Link to her at the castle after the tournament. Link ends up losing the tournament but is pulled aside by Impa and brought to Zelda where she informs him of her belief in him being the Chosen Hero.
The Princess offers Link the chance to be trained as a knight of Hyrule and he, driven by his desire despite not really knowing what Zelda is talking about because he doesn’t know much about the Triforce, accepts her offer. Link gets through three weeks of basic training (sometimes training with Shiek, who unbeknownst to him is Zelda herself) and learns to better hold his own in combat. Link continues to communicate with Malon through letters throughout his time at the castle and eventually brings Epona with him to the castle. Eventually the day comes where Zelda sends Link and a large group of soldiers on a mission to protect a village from what they believe to be the next target of a monster attack.
Link arrives at the village atop Epona with the large group of soldiers and they fight off the attack and save the village. Link further proves Zelda’s theory of him being the Chosen Hero when Link fights and defeats the leader of the attacking monsters in one-on-one combat. A few more saving attacked villages of different races (like Zoras and Gorons, with the Gorons begin to refer to Link as “Brother”) later and Link continues to prove himself by defeating large monsters and further convinces Zelda that he is the Chosen Hero. However, one particular monster is leading every attack and always retreats before Link can finish him off in a fight. Eventually, on one of Link’s last missions with his group, Link follows a chiming sound into and through the Lost Woods and stumbles upon the Master Sword. The chiming sound is revealed to be Fi, the Spirit of the Master Sword, who has called Link and informed him of the truth about him being the Chosen Hero.
As Link exits the Lost Woods with the Master Sword in hand, he finds the village is under attack. Link uses the Master Sword to cut down enemy after enemy after enemy with the Master Sword and confronts the monster that has been retreating constantly and finally cuts him down with the Master Sword.
Elsewhere, Ganondorf, who has been the source of all the monster attacks finally decides to join his forces in battle and begins his march towards Hyrule Castle. Link and his group have been called back to Castle Town to help defend it from Ganondorf and his army.
Before the attack, Zelda finally presents Link with the iconic green tunic and green pointed cap and expresses her belief and trust in his ability to defeat Ganondorf. Every race from around Hyrule bands together to oppose Ganondorf and his army at Castle Town.
During the battle, Link and Shiek(Zelda) finally come face-to-face with Ganondorf and each of their Triforce parts begin to resonate. Here Link finally finds out that Shiek is Zelda after Ganondorf explains the legend of the Triforce and their respective owners; Power belongs to him, Wisdom always belongs to the Princess of Hyrule, and Courage always belongs to the Hero.
Ganondorf encases Zelda in a crystal and forces her to watch him and Link fight to the death. Link strikes down Ganondorf, but in his rage he refuses to die and transforms into The Demon King Ganon. Link and Zelda work together to finally defeat Ganon, and with Ganon’s death, Link and Zelda use the full Triforce to wish for the restoration of Hyrule.
A week goes by and Link and Zelda journey together to the Lost Woods where they lay the Master Sword back in its pedestal where it shall wait for the next hero. Once Link and Zelda return back to the castle, Zelda expresses her desire to reward him with anything he desires in exchange for helping save Hyrule. To this, Link asks for materials to rebuild his family’s farm. As Link returns to Lon Lon Ranch, he finally confesses to Malon and they begin their romantic relationship, and together (along with the help of Talon and some carpenters and architects sent by Zelda), they rebuild Link’s farm.
    The End.

Why did the goddess Hylia move the people to Skyloft? the battle that sealed Demise. What happened before Skyward Sword? That would give them enough freedom to create a story and not have too much of an impact on the video games... but there is so much more that they can do. Will they make it into a multi-movie series or will it be one-and-done?

I really like the idea of Child Link being the protagonist not the typical older Link we see. I think a movie could better capture the exploration mystery and charm of a child link story like the beginning of Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past or Windwaker more than a grand fantasy epic like Twilight Princess or even Breath of the Wild. Because that really is the heart of the series: a kid exploring caves in the countryside, possibly dreaming about fighting dragons to save a princess, but that's not as important.

  • @Librarising1618
    @Librarising1618 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Because Link isn’t canonically mute and we just never hear him speak, he isn’t necessarily silent when we might otherwise think he is. It’s totally possible that he monologues/thinks out loud or has casual small talk with merchants, etc. The point of his “silence” is so that the player projects themselves onto him, therefore we see ourselves in him-I also see Link as a reserved, “silent” type, but I am also that myself. It’s completely possible that someone with a more brash, extroverted personality could see him as a wild, courageous swordsman and therefore interpret his “silence” differently. It’ll be a challenge to convey that via an actor

I was glad to hear you mention LotR, I think they would do well to take that direction. Serious at its core, but with close attention to the warm fantasy details that help create the world of Hyrule, like the hustle and bustle of castle town, the hobbit-like coziness of the Deku tree and Kokiri/Korok forest, and the adventurous spirit of Hyrule field.
Other things to include that I think will help make the movie a success:
    1. Iconic Characters: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Impa, Epona, Kaepora Gaebora, Gorons, Zoras, Rito, Gerudo, the Deku Tree, Kakariko Villagers, Farore, Nayru, and Din.
    2. Core elements: the Triforce, The Master Sword, some form of musical instrument, and a series of 3-7 elements to collect (possibly setting up a trilogy)
    3. A deep exploration into the themes of Good vs Evil, and the balance of Courage, Wisdom, and Power.
    4. A close companion (possibly a new one) to Link, that can do some speaking for him. He shouldn’t be mute, nor brooding, but slow to speak and brief natured. Stoic is the route to go.
    5. The stakes have to be higher than just Link, the journey of Hyrule should follow several main characters in a live action film.
    6. Not a must, but a couple other characters I would love to see would be Twinrova, Darknut, Great Fairies, Kokiri, Dark Link, and the King of Red Lions.
    Things to avoid:
    1. Dungeons / Temples - I just can’t think of a way these would translate well to a movie without taking up too much time.
    2. Humor- I agree with everything you said. Ganondorf should be terrifying, not funny like Bowser. There are a handful of humorous characters in the world of Zelda, but they would be best left with minimal screen time.
    3. Link should be primarily a swordsman, I would love to see slingshots and boomerangs and bows, but I think these could be utilized by other characters and find their place in the movie outside of Link’s hands.

I do agree that Ganondorf would be a much better villain for a movie, though I really hope they at least acknowledge that this is only his human form; only a fraction of his true power. Moreover, I've always loved the themes of the triforce, of characters being the champions, or empyreans, of courage, wisdom, and power. I think animation is a medium best suited for things you can't easily do in live action. That's the whole advantage of having this creative freedom and malleability. However it would depend on what kind of Zelda movie they want to make. Hollywood has shown many times now it can bring epic fantasy action to great heights through live action, for instance, and as everyone is pointing out, in the Peter Jackson LotR trilogy.
I'm personally more worried than not regardless, if only because I fear it won't cater to what I personally want and expect from a Zelda movie. It might be a good, even solid entry on its own, but yeah being a big fan of an original work is always really tough when faced with an adaptation. Sometimes they nail it, sometimes the expectations are vague by nature (Mario movie), other times they butcher it. But either way I'm of course very eager to see what they cook up for us. With Miyamoto as consultant, I can only assume there'll at least be a high level of QA.
If anything my strongest assumption is that it's gonna be a safe movie. It won't try anything crazy plot wise, and it's gonna try it's best to bring the core, classic story of zelda games to life (ganondorf wants power, zelda is caught/incapacitated somehow, and Link saves the day). Of course I want more, and I kinda expect to eat those words.
In any case I'm very eager to finally see a piece of cinema from this franchise, whatever it'll be. I just hope I'll look back it positively like the Mario movie, and not just dismissively refer to it as "oh, yeah... the Zelda movie..." the years after, hoping to forget it.

Completely agree on the importance of Link‘s casting and the un- or lesser importance of Zelda and Ganon(dorf). Will be interesting to see if they go with Humanoid Ganondorf or Boar Ganon.
Also, can Nintendo do a Metroid movie next after the Zelda one? 😄

Metroid would probably be much easier to adapt. Zelda seems like it would be one of their hardest properties to do a good adaptation of. I understand why they’d want to adapt it since it’s their 2nd most iconic franchise tho.
It’ll be interesting to see how much they try to stick to the conventions of the games. It would probably be easier for them to make a generic fantasy story with a Zelda coat of paint so it’ll be interesting to see if they go that route.

I think what they really need to get right is the worldbuilding: creating detailed environments and interesting places, landscapes and villages for the characters to explore. At it's core core, that's what Zelda is about. Exploration of unknown places with the story as a secondary (still important) factor. And that feeling of slowly getting to know a fantastical world is propably what is most important to make this movie work.
Then also, because of that, I hope this movie won't just adapt a pre-existing Zelda story, but tell a new one in a yet unknown unique version of Hyrule. And I hope they take some risks with the story and do more than going through some standard Zelda plot-points. For example have the movie start out with a young Link and a young Ganondorf, both orphaned, growing up together in the woods of Hyrule.

I am worried, really worried, but can't help but be extremely excited! I wanna watch that tomorrow!
Also, I would have def preferred an animated movie, but I think they want to follow into One Piece's footsteps, which turned out quite well, but Oda is a master of his craft and his craft IS storytelling, whereas Miyamoto and co openly stated several times over the past 30+ years, that they are mostly excited about gameplay mechanics and the gamers ability to explore. It's a completely different thing, but I am staying hopeful. And storywise, I would almost prefer to go with one of the main Zelda games, maybe a story of the hero of time, his journey with a richer and deeper story, so that it leaves room for more movies to come out in the future IF this one turns out to be good. They could then do TP and have new Link train under the Hero of Time that we've come to known in the previous movie, if that goes well then tell the origin story through slyward sword and so on. Or just ditch all that and make one with an original story, although I would almost prefer them using the ideas for an original story for a new and hopefully better game, than what they've released recently, since that was so poor in the story department, from my personal point of view.

Imagine doing a trilogy style story for this film. Lord of the rings style. I think it could be a great way to do it. To be fair, a character like Aragorn is a great example of what a character like Link could be in live action. A quiet, stoic character carrying an immense burden and destiny.

Sadly we may never get Trilogies like that again. Studios and Executives want profit profit profit. And making a trilogy before hand is too creative and big of a risk for them.

@@Sir_Adam Not to mention Lord of the Rings had books to pull from. There's no trilogy template for Zelda to follow, so they'd have to make it up. I see them going for a stand-alone style and then making a sequel or two only *if* it's successful.

I'm trying to go into this fairly neutrally, as the choice for life action over animation makes me pretty wary (especially considering the fandom has wanted a ghibli-esque animated Zelda feature for so long we've practically animated it ourselves at this point). The best case scenario, to me at least, would be something between the Lord of the Rings (the trilogy, not the way the Hobbit was dragged out excessively) and D&D: Honor Among Thieves, which was more comedic but still respected the essence of its source and had a strong emotional core. I'm largely reserving further judgement until we have more information, but I hope they don't rush this and give it the time and respect it needs to be good.
Tbh most of the positive responses I've seen to the announcement have been people calling for Danny DeVito to play Tingle, which is the only acceptable famous actor casting imo

With the right production values, and minimal CGI, I think the casting of a younger and older link, like in IT, could be great. Maybe told in a similar way.

I feel like to capture the widest audience bringing in old and new fans the best option will be to combine all the most iconic parts (the master sword stuff like that) from across all the games into a sort of movie smoothy. That way they can come up with a whole new story while still keeping key elements so it's still strongly Legend of Zelda
