I bought my first bamboo about 5 months ago and I’m already hooked, probably ought to wait until I have more than 3 stalks but it doesn’t hurt to look, right?
Once you have two and the third is sprouting I would be comfortable pruning the top of the oldest stalk to induce regrowth to air layer/make cutting. If you prune it higher, say 6 or 10' you can cut it multiple times.
As ten year olds our teacher for some reason showed us how to propagate sugarcane, and it was the technique of planting several nodes horizontally. He was a fanatic for Australian history too and taught us more history than older students learned in much later years . He was an a-hole however . School wasn't pleasant in those days .
I just planted sugarcane seeds this week! I don’t know why I’m trying to grow it other than I like growing unusual things. My tobacco is growing like crazy. I also planted cinnamon tree seeds and vanilla orchid cuttings.
Great video. Finally someone explaining how to grow clump bamboo without digging for miles. I have the thinner stuff growing in my garden that i use for veggie trellises etc., but it doesn't seem to spread much, so this is perfect.
The digging method doesn't work well for me. The roots are so strong! No need to dig with these other methods:) For the thinner bamboo you can also try tip layering where you bend down the tip of the bamboo and put it in a pot, still attached to the mother plant. Place a brick or pin it down so it doesn't pull out. Roots should appear in a couple of months.
I’m going to try this. I ordered some giant cold hardy bamboo. Vivax it was called. They sent root rhizomes which I have planted and carefully watered for 2 months. I was about to give up, but after watching your video, I think I will continue to water them for another few months. Thanks for the video!
I'm here in Florida also 10 minutes away from Bamboo forever on Snowhill road. I spent about 1300 on albo bamboo plants. I have 2 acres and my neighbors are destroying all the woods so I need the privacy. Was the bamboo laying flat successfully propagated? I picked up several more plants today about 20 feet in length I'm considering propagating them in to many plants. There's nothing like nature in this life, I'm glad to see like minded people.
Yes it was successful. View Part 2- filmed after the cuttings rooted in the ground. Sprouts came up from 4 of the 7 nodes. I actually learned this technique by observing my land. My bamboo was getting too thick so I cut a bunch and piled them up on top of each other. The ones on the bottom that were smushed into the rich soil took root and started to grow. Compost, moist soil and share will increase your success. th-cam.com/video/O9W4rbYUnO8/w-d-xo.html
@TiaSilvasy Thanks that's awesome I watched the video. I'm going to start propagating this way I've been soaking bamboo in water all this time. Laying them In the ground does seem more efficient. I spent too much money on bamboo so now I'm splitting plants and picking up bamboo I find free online. After my friend/neighbor died, nature disappeared on that side. Plants, deer I fed daily, owls, wild life all gone they're scared of the new neighbors bull dozers and chain saws daily. My friend Dave that died, he used to always say "This is my paradise" and he was so right.
This was very useful information, I've heard people talking about propagating bamboo, but they never actually explain it. I have a 30-40ft tall bamboo in my back yard I want to spread along my property perimeter for privacy and windbreaking.
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain where we currently live through a drought and we are creating swales and plant them with bamboo. Thanks for sharing this video
I have just picked up a couple of fresh bamboo branches here on Vashon island. When I get home I’ll put them in water and see if some roots will sprout up before I put them in the ground. We’ll see…
You seem pretty cool, im going to try all 3 methods eventually, i recenty aquired from a niebor a clumping type bamboo theat turned out to be 68 divisions with the roots an, your video popped up first, and I learned something awesome, thank you
Loving this Tia! Mark and I planted bamboo seeds. 5 out of 50 sprouted! One is especially large. Very excited to see if propagating other ways can work well too! Thank you☀️
@@michaelcorbidge7914 they don't flower often, species can go decades without flowering and when they do they all flower at the same time like a super mast year.
Wow I’m also in Central Florida and I’m on a big ranch in the country. I found a patch of Bamboo in my woods and wanted to learn about transplanting this to a spot closer to my house. My first search for information and I found your channel and video so I’m fairly sure it’s similar conditions to what you’re dealing with. I’ll be trying what you suggested and I appreciate your video on this topic 😊❤️
I'd be careful of transplanting bamboo from the woods. You don't want running bamboo! Stick with the clumping types that are not invasive. There are two good bamboo nurseries in Central Florida, Bamboo forever on Snowhill Rd. in East Orlando and Beautiful Bamboo on the west side near Groveland, FL.
I do not use any rooting hormone. Make sure you do your ground layering of bamboo in a shady moist spot and apply compost and mulch to help maintain favorable soil moisture. Also, some species of bamboo are more difficult to propagate than others. Here I used giant timber bamboo and it did great!
I only do cuttings so have no experience with seeds or tissue culture. It depends on how many you want to get growing. Tissue culture would likely be the fastest propagation method.
No the only kind of bamboo that grows in the wild in Florida is the switch cane bamboo which is really thin, you’ll find it by riverbanks. There are several bamboo nurseries in our area like Bamboo Forever and Beautiful Bamboo. You can buy a starter plant and propagate from that.
The common name of this one is giant timber bamboo or Oldham's bamboo. The scientific name is Bambusa oldhamii. These propagation methods are universal and work with many types of bamboo.
Yes both the ground layering and air layering methods worked. I had near 100% success with this giant timber bamboo. Make sure you propagate them in a shady moist area with some compost or other organic matter.
Im going to try your trick. Found some giant bamboo the some tossed on the side of the road. All of us citrus growers are slowly going out of business. Gotta try something new, always loved bamboo. Saw some of your old videos. I use to live on Oahu too from 2006-2013 on the westside. Now im back in Polk county :-(
Its best to use the bamboo when its fresh cut, it may be too dried out from the side of the road but worth a try! Bamboo is a growing industry here. There are two or so commercial nurseries in the Central Florida area that I know about. Aloha!
Do you have a species name? Giant green is a description that's a little broad. It looks like Bambusa Vulgaris. But Guadua is called giant timber bamboo. I'm trying to get some Guadua.
Thank you Tia for this video! I also live in central Florida (Sanfords historic district) and want to divide my bamboo plant. Im cutting some stems to make a bamboo chain curtain for my gf and have started air rooting by wrapping sprouts with wet moss and plastic. Might try this cutting and sticking method too!
The one I air layered took too, but the ground layer method was quicker and yielded many more plants. I think the plants had stronger root systems too.
I just cut a part growing off a rhizome, stuck it in some potting soil, put in the shade and gave it water. Seems to be doing fine. Couldn't have been easier.
@@LynnMTHA Yes. There are numerous spots where the rhizomes back up on themselves and pop out of the ground. Some of them have sections that have stuff growing off of them. I just snip the section off. I'm thinking at the beginning of fall I'm going to try digging up several entire plants and planting them in other locations. Supposedly the little cuttings I put in buckets will be ready to go in the ground by then. The bamboo really grew well this year. I think it's the fourth year since I planted the original plants. I'm no expert on plants but bamboo has to be one of the easiest around to propagate.
Give it a try I'm having good success with the one I air layered too. I'll be recording that video soon so make sure you subscribe to my channel and look for it on my bamboo playlist:)
Great video. This is the channel I’ve been looking for. Now I’m off to find the Facebook page ☺️ Thank you for posting these videos. Cairns, Australian. Sub tropical zone 9 (?)
Sorry but I believe this is a waste of time. I got some rhizomes from someone that dug it up because it was running into their yard. I put it in some potting soil and it took off immediately and put out several small shoots only 1 month.
Yes division of rhizomes is the best method of propagation and mentioned in the video. Some of my bamboos are too big to dig up and divide so then the other methods are easier.
I don't understand something. You post great videos about the dangers of non-native and invasive plants and then tell us how to propagate one of the worse ones.
Bamboo can go either way as a beneficial plant or an invasive weed. It depends on where you are located at, what species you are growing and if it’s planted with adequate space to grow. In Florida we generalize the clumping bamboos are good and running bamboo is bad.
What why? In the USA? Pretty sure if it's on public land you can cut it just cause it's considered invasive - whether it actually is or not idk, but I like it
Why on earth would anyone encourage others to plant any type of bamboo? The stuff is terribly invasive and can make life a living hell for neighbors who inevitably end up with unwanted bamboo on their property. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE, PLEASE DON'T PLANT BAMBOO ANYWHERE!!!
There are many species of bamboo. I only plant clumping bamboo. I do not plant running bamboo. Most clumping bamboos do not become a problem if they are planted with enough space to grow. If you have a problem with your neighbors bamboo I recommend cutting it to the ground with a sawzall and treating it with a herbicide. You can see how to do it in my video: th-cam.com/video/RdhKJi-_21o/w-d-xo.html
