TURN plain SCRAPBOOK PAPER into an AMAZING BACKGROUND for MIXED MEDIA ART!

- Scrapbook paper backgrounds are my GO TO for the mixed media art I collage on canvas or in my art journal. Today's video is a full length mixed media art tutorial, so grab a canvas board (or your art journal!), 3-4 sheets of your favorite scrapbooking paper, some matte medium, & let's get started.

As you'll see in the video, scrapbook paper is my FAVORITE collage material for my mixed media portraits because it creates such a SMOOTH surface to paint on top of when you use matte medium as your adhesive (I love liquitex matte medium!).
The texture created in scrapbooking paper collage is subtle from a distance, but can be rich and complex depending on the patterns and color schemes you select! It's simple to come up with collage ideas at any craft store because they sell pads & collections of scrapbook paper that already GO TOGETHER! It's makes collage design SO simple because the patterns create variety and depth, while the colors are repeated in creative ways :) It's a pretty fail-safe technique to come up with your collage backgrounds this way!

I hit a thrift store gold mine find of hundreds of sheets of vintage style scrapbook paper for 20 bucks and the library was giving away all these folders of vintage papers and letters and all kinds of beautiful hiatorical papers

Try makeup brushes with painting and blending! They are great with paint! A soft yet stiff brush for blending strokes! The larger soft brushes are great for super soft large fuzzy and super blended. Really everyone even just decent cheap dollar store makeup brushes! They are great added to my studio. I also love the stabilo ALLs!

Part 2. Lol I hit a button and it sent before I could rave on about you! Your enthusiasm about what you do is one thing but to impart that same infectious spirit to the rest of us is so inspiring. Karen, thank you for this. I have been working with crumpled paper, and utilising scrapbook paper, I like the texture when it is crumpled. I ESPECIALLY like your style/opinion of keeping the background fairly simple and keeping the focus on the foreground. This is JUST the type of video I have been searching for for YEARS. I never could quite get into putting 5, 6, and 7 different textures on a background, all the while often covering up most of it with the next layer, just seemed a little wasteful. I am not meaning to be critical, art is art, but your style of doing backgrounds is DEFINITELY for me! Thanks!

Should I use gesso, mod podge or gel medium to collage designed tissue paper to my mixed media art journal? Just wondering your thoughts on it. Thank you for your share I get a lot from your videos and inspiration as well! ❤️

But to break it down: use Gel Medium. Gesso is just a surface prep and has mo adhesive qualities, and Mod Podge is designed to go ON paint but not under or in it 😂, and I'm assuming you'll be adding paint at some point? Over your collage base? If so, Gel or Medium is the one you want! That video I dropped the link to will explain more if you want a more in depth explanation and demo 👍👍 HAVE FUN!!!

Aw, thanks Norma!! This real time lesson is in the Mixed Media Society. Typically my longest lessons are about 90 mins to 2 hours tops. I’m a quick worker!! Lol!! I like to do my paintings on one sitting 😃 most satisfying that way!!

Super fun tutorial! My favorite parts were how the polka dot paper was still visible giving it a bit of pop art feel and the snake.
I noticed you put gesso on top of Mod Podge. Typically you wouldn't recommend that, right? It looked like maybe you sanded it lightly first? Curious about pros and cons here. Thanks!
Good catch on the Gesso!! Yes, its not my favorite but I was (in the real time version that I give to my Mixed Media Society Members) illustrating ways you can make the foreground POP against a dark background or a background that doesn't contrast much against the foreground! I didnt send it first, but I did add another layer of Mod Podge to seal it down one more time 👍👍👍
She did not sand it was an ink pad she rubbed around the edges.

Hi Karen, did you use a white stabilo to outline her face? I know you used a black stabilo. However, not sure if that was a gellato or white watercolor crayon??
After putting down scrapebook paper, you mixed paint with matte medium. Why did you not mixed the paint with gesso @ this point? This was all prior to face being drawn.
I also noticed that after putting down scrapbook paper, there were some areas where canvas is showing. This is ok because those areas will be covered in paint?
Great questions! I just used plain school chalk to draw her in. I didn’t mix matte medium in with my paint, I was painting right from the bottle so I’m not sure where you got that from but I was just painting over the grey Gesso with regular skin color craft paint. And yes. I let areas of the canvas peekaboo through because I knew the painting of the girl would cover well over all those areas! Hope that answers all your questions!
Do you use an actual blow dryer or a craft dryer to dry in between layers?
I use a regular hair dryer, I find the craft dryers to be way too hot and not enough air! (This is Karen btw, I’m just logged in under one of my other channels! Oops!) hope that helps!
