Why LEGO Indiana Jones FAILED (2009-2023)

  • Everyone was super excited with the return of LEGO Indiana Jones in 2023, but the theme has barely made an impact, and with only three sets released in the initial April wave, is this the end of the theme forever?

I think its because lego deemed the whole franchise "too violent' just because its more realistic than star wars or super heroes, which is a real shame

@@EPPicstuffThe jaws set is a standalone 18+ black box display set tbf, but I agree with you about 'The Batman' sets as they were regular box movie tie in sets, you could argue that Lego didn't know how violent the film would be as they make these sets way before these movies are finished and released, but from what I remember 'The Batman' was always marketed to be a more gritty take on Batman since the film was announced, so it definitely is a head scratcher

@@thegreatpiginthesky3904I say it's easily both being at fault. Because we know for a fact that the USA branch of LEGO has openly-avowed activists within their ranks, plus they already have a track record of doing (and attempting to do) this kind of thing. Remember, it wasn't Disney that got the Jabba's Palace set prematurely pulled from shelves, that was entirely on LEGO.

  • @thebutterstick8659
    @thebutterstick8659 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +78

Okay I think this is more of a Disney problem than a Lego problem. Case in point Hasbro had some TOD figures that leaked as prototypes for their adventure series line though they got cancelled. All the TOD stuff has been wiped off the planet. Think about it. If TOD really infringed on LEGO’s rules would it have gotten all the way down the pipeline? Maybe, but it was likely Disney urged them to cancel it. That was their statement where they said they worked with Disney to consolidate the line.
Disney has produced almost 0 merch for KOTCS and like a tiny bit of merch for TOD.
Stranger though is Lego never did anything more with the license. No sets for the fifth movie was a shocker to me. The only hope we have now is in about a year from now hearing about a new Indy D2C set like what happened with LOTR.
I genuinely hope the day Lego retires the license somebody uploads a TOD onto Lego ideas.
Either way, Disney sucks. Indy deserved a better 5th movie and a better set of toy lines for his final outing.

Why do people act like LEGO are complete strangers to covering more mature themes? For fs sake they literally have an 18+ collectors adults welcome section. They made the entire original lineup of sets covering all the films even TOD. And now that we know LEGO planned and intended to make a new temple of doom all evidence points to Disney interference and getting cold feet in the eleventh hour with everything related to TOD. Maybe LEGO is just concerned that Disney may continue making them cancel sets which is problematic because it’s costly for them to spend time designing and producing a set only to have it be cancelled. That’s money they’re losing for really no good reason

I was expecting Dial of Destiny sets, with a few more from Crystal Skull and the other 3 films. But instead we got nothing. I don’t think it’s all legos decision. Take Hasbro’s Indiana jones adventure series of six inch action figures. It was also similarly short lived (3 waves in ~6 months) and avoided possibly controversial characters like Molar Ram and characters from Kingdom of The Crystal Skull. I think it speaks to Disneys approach to marketing the Indiana Jones brand. It feels like the whole promotion and roll out of merch was only designed to last a few months around the release of the new movie. It’s strange that the first 4 films only made it to Disney+ in the run up to Dial of Destiny despite Disney owning the IP since their acquisition of Lucasfilm.

I dont think it was Lego's call but rather Disney/Lucasfilm. Why do I say this? Because rhe same thing happened with Hasbro's Adventure series. Mola Ram was in rhe pipeline but got canceled. With Lego I can maybe understand it with Lego appealing to kids.
However with the adventure series despite the box saying 4+? These 6" figures are undoubtedly aimed at older collector's.
I get that marketing toys of nazi villains is a tough sell. But I feel they should let the parents be parents. As far as Mola Ram and Temple of Doom? I think a lot of controversy around that film is overblown. Even Indian actor Amish Puri found the controversy to be silly. And he was labeled anti nationalist just for playing the part.
There are ways they could have done german soldiers. They gave us Toht afterall but didn't put the swastika on his lapel. They even made an alternate melting face headsculpt. The german soldiers wouldnt have been too difficult. With Vogel they could have given him a red arm band sans swastika. I dont think collector's would have been upset if it meant getting a figure and not.
But even putting that aside? The adventure series had so many gaps. There was nothing from crystal skull. No Lao Che, No willie Scott, etc. Heck they could have done a last crusade Salah.
At the end of day regardless of it being Lego or Hasbro figures? Indy is an old IP with an aging fanbase. It hasnt had the kind of franchise care Star Wars had through the years where you were constantly getting new stuff here and there. Whether it was books, toys, etc.

I’m not surprised that the Temple of Doom set was cancelled-I’m a fan of the original movie series, but at its best, it’s kind of a problematic subject matter for today’s taste. What some people see as treasure hunting or even just procuring pieces for a museum can also be seen as robbing another culture. It’s a sensitive topic for sure. But Temple of Doom in particular is pretty off; I know there’s a lot of Hindu iconography and allusions in the movie, but it’s like the writers didn’t really know anything about Hinduism and just swung for the fences with things they thought would be shocking and/or exotic. For example, most Hindus are vegetarian and I’ve never known anyone, vegetarian or not, to just chow down on a bowl of chilled monkey brains. Lego is bigger and more expensive than ever before, there’s more scrutiny on them now than in the past and they probably didn’t want to invite the controversy. The brand exists on its goodwill with customers, they wouldn’t want to test that.
For the record, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be more culturally sensitive and there’s also no reason to, say, want the movies changed or locked in a vault; films are like time capsules in a way, it’s important that they continue to exist, but are given context when they do broach sensitive subject matter that was okay in the past, but wouldn’t be okay now. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be able to enjoy Temple of Doom or that people should stop watching it or that they did a bad thing by making it. It should just be known that the depiction of Hinduism in that movie isn’t accurate at all. And, at the same time, I can understand not wanting to associate something new and made today with a problematic past depiction.

Personally I believe it’s due to the constant reference to Nazis and the third reich. It didn’t stop them in the 2000’s with them even making iron cross stickers, because everyone was a bit more tolerant then, but just like the slave Leia upset, it’s not something they can get away with now. I theorise that a higher up saw the fighter pilot, did some research, and extremely late into the theme’s production vetoed it completely, as the minifig from the last crusade set is an EXTREMELY ACCURATE depiction of a arid/desert lands Nazi Air Force jumpsuit. Prior to this their German and USSR minifigs were rather vague depictions of each antagonist faction.
Let us remember they made the LITERAL ARK OF THE COVENANT from Jewish and Christian religious texts - TWICE. it’s gotta be the cornerstone of the Old Testament, since it held the tablets which had the Ten Commandments inscribed upon them. Lego is okay with that, but not the temple of doom? I doubt religion is the purpose.

No one cares about Indy, it's just not a hot property anymore. It became underused and put on ice for so long that it was deemed a "dead franchise" by modern culture.
When they finally resurrected him, too much time had passed. The world outgrew Indy as a hero character.

This is the worst case scenario but it’s possible that LEGO saw all the reactionaries hate on Dial of Destiny and The Acolyte about as soon as they were announced and backed out of making sets for them. I’m furious if this is the reason why and I doubt it is but with the growing audience and influence of reactionary content, with South Park mocking Disney for being “woke” and Elon Musk buying out Twitter (to say nothing of the widespread viewership of Ben Shapiro and Fox News), there is the off-chance that this happened.

It seemed a little less kid friendly than the other shows and 2. The sets based off shows don’t really do well anyways and with each show (except for Mando) we are getting less and less tie-in sets.
