I have a Gibson GA-79 from 1960 that I've owned since the early 60s. This is a stereo amp with two independent 15 wtt channels. I still play it every day. It is one of 250 or so made. It has the same wood foot pedal.

That amp is sick! Those late 50s Gibson amps are treasures. Everything from the circuits, tube line up, speakers, wood, to the incredible tolex work. Back 20 years ago you could still get these amps dirt cheap. They flew under the radar. Gibson had a huge lineup of amps that had some of the most unique tones I've ever found in an amplifier. As far as blues goes, many consider some of Gibson's amps the holy grail of harp amps. Like the 4x8 ga45. I always found them to be as good for guitar as anything. The mid 50s to early 60s stuff in particular. Tweed amps mostly. But the ga40, ga45, the ga9 narrow panel is ridiculous. Ga30 invader tweed amp is one of my all time favorite reverb amps. If you listen to blues from that era you can find the tone of these amps over and over again.
Fenders are just so expensive. But even beyond gibson, the 50s into the early 60s was just a magical time period for musical gear. There are so many off brand amps from that time period that are just amazing sounding amps that aren't at a price tag of fender. I could never afford fenders so I've always hunted down those off brand gems.
Always cool to see others enjoy and appreciate such amazing examples of music history.

I have the exact same kind of 1959 Gibson Explorer tweed GA-18 amp with mahogany footswitch. My amp has been fully serviced and recapped. Mine has the original Jenson 10-inch speaker with an alnico magnet. Great tone for a lot less money than a similar Fender Princeton tweed!
The story about the mahogany footswitches is that they were made from the scrap wood that was cut off of the boards that made the bodies of the 1959 Les Paul guitars in the Kalamazoo factory. The joke is that if you glue a couple dozen of these footswitches together, you could build a 1959 Les Paul!
    Merry Christmas, Matthew!

Two things... Yes, Gibson amps are underrated in this era. But as far as tremolo, they have probably the best tremolo there is. Fender never made a pitch modulating vibrato circuit in ANY of their amps. The only company to do that (to my knowledge) was Magnatone. They are a different animal. But as far as temolos go, any circuit that modulates amplitude using tube bias as the point of oscillation are usually great. This included Gibson amps of this era. Fender BF "vibrato" sucks balls by comparison.

The only effects I like are real reverb, tremolo, wah, and tape echo… but I usually play completely dry with absolutely nothing else 99% of the time. I like the dry tone from a Tweed Super or Marshall JTM and players look at me like I’m crazy, but it just sounds better than what they prefer. Your tone on these videos sounds really good.

I've got a Gibson amp that somewhat resembles that one. It is labelled 'Falcon', doesn't have the chicken head knobs, and came with a twelve inch Jensen speaker (I've got a low-end Celestion in it now). I paid $100 for it thirty six years ago. Had some tubes replaced quite a while ago and it's still going strong. I have no idea what wattage the amp has but I do know it's loud enough that the volume never goes above two and a half without my wife telling me to turn it down.

I had it checked over several times by various repair people but no-one could ever find anything wrong with it. Sadly it now sits in my father's loft as it cost so much to keep replacing the tubes every couple of weeks.

@@MatthewScottmusic Yeah, I looked on Reverb last night. There were 6 listed on there that were priced between $4.1k to $6.2k (excluding shipping and tax). The lowest priced one had replaced tubes, speaker, handle, power cord, and the back panel. Even the highest priced one at $6.2k had the tweed all furry and ripped up (and a replaced handle/cord). A mint, all original example would be priced even higher. The days of $3-4k are long gone.

Love your channel. Everytime it's like a spritual walk back in time seeing all these vintage guitars and your young but its like from that Era. Like from a time capsal or portal. Keep up the good work. I will be watching...oh I bought a Jay Ray pedal from your review. I paid 375.00 on Reverd. ..my be to much , but hard to get and it sounded so good. I had to. Thanks for let me know it existed. I would have never know. There is so many pedals its overwhelming at times. I want a catalinbread No.5 old version, all red, but impossible to find. It mixed with a 63 FRV-1 Reverb pedal....awesome! blues tone... I also want a Ibenez Tube screamer TS-10.

Very good sounding. I’d be curious to know what all was done, if anything, to the original circuit? Looking to build one actually.
