I bought a 1964 Fender Super Reverb at a rummage sale in 1987. It truly sounded like crap, but some wise person advised me that any blackface Fender amp was well worth what I paid, working or not. So I brought just the head to a reputable repair shop. When I got it back, I hooked it up to the speakers, plugged it in, and it still sounded very weak. I talked to the amp repair guy, and he said to take a 9 volt battery and hold it to the 1/4 " speaker connector, and watch the speakers to see if they all moved in the same direction. Sure enough, three of the four 10" speakers moved out, while one of them moved inward. (they were wired consistently, but one was for some reason in reverse polarity to the other three.) So I swapped the wires around on the speaker that was out of phase with the others, and KA-BOOM!! That blackface Super Reverb has been my go to amp ever since. So, if you run across a vintage multi speaker tube amp that does not sound as it should, it's possible that one of those speakers is wired backwards, even if it looks to be wired correctly. That 9 volt battery trick saved me from getting rid of a great vintage amp that sounded like crap just because a couple speaker wires were inverted.
Hey Matthew, I loved the Firebird series. Thanks so much for taking the time to document these old guitars and their stories! Having your videos to look forward to made 2020 easier to handle.
You have really got a great vintage guitar collection and I love that you restore them .... and teach us as you do it too. I could also listen to you play them all day ;-) If I had to choose the one that is my favorite it would be the firebird.
Love the Psychedelic Intro. The Gibson Dove sounds great - that was quite the worthy guitar rescue. It also proves that it is possible to get a totally natural full sound with an adjustable metal saddle! on an acoustic guitar. I bet it was fun to dial it into the perfect action. All the guitars and amps in your list made for interesting and entertaining videos. Wishing you loads of fun in 2021.
Matt you have my vote for the best Vintage guitar youtuber of 2021. Keep up the good work. You have been giving me hours of viewing pleasure. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge to us.
Thank you Matthew for this video and for all you have made and put out this year. I always enjoy them and learn from them. We don't know what 2021 will bring but I hope to stay watching and getting a lot from your videos. Peace!
Gotta say, one of my favorite TH-cam channels right here. I enjoy everything you post and love checking out whatever vintage gear you get your hands on. Gotta say though, the firebird is probably my favorite. Hardtail strat is pretty damn cool too. Keep on rockin'🤘
Matthew I am really digging your videos. I started to learn to play again just a few months ago. The thing is I love looking at guitars. To me it’s like art. Like all the older equipment you show us is just incredible. I am trying to learn as much as I can about guitars and amplifiers so please keep doing what your doing. And by the way the way you play and the sound that you get out of the guitars you play sounds absolutely incredible to me. Thanks
I don’t know if you are specifically looking for a vintage hardtail Strat or if you’re open to a new one. If you are okay with a new one Fender added a hardtail option to the Mod Shop back in the summer and Sherwood Green is currently an available color in the Mod Shop. You should be able to get one that way for $2,000 or slightly less. I’ve also been very interested in a hardtail Strat myself and I want one with a maple fretboard which means the one current production model that Fender offers the Robert Cray Signature (in Mexican made or Custom Shop versions) isn’t what I’m looking for unless I swap the neck. 70s hardtail Strats seem to be plentiful and not overly expensive, and there have also been few hardtail options since the late 90s off and on including the Big Apple Strat, an American Standard (for a short time), and a limited edition 70s Reissue a few years ago. I haven’t decided which way to go yet. I’m leaning toward just swapping the neck on a Mexican Robert Cray model because I like Inca Silver and everything else about the guitar except the fretboard.
@@charlesbolton8471 I'd love a vintage one mainly for the mint green pick gaurd, that and a rosewood neck would be killer but brand new is fine by me. thanks for the info bro :) now all I need to do is aquire 2 grand and my dream guitar is all mine!!!
Matthew; thanks for this fabulous 2020 salvage success retrospective. You made lemonade out of an apocalyptic year! Add me to your list of interested parties to that well-played TV Yellow 1958 Les Paul Special. I can't wait to see/hear it with new frets.

Love your channel, keep up the good work. Love to see what gear you get next, to hear the vintage guitars singing again, and watching you bring some of them back to life. I recently got my first proper fender strat and at 40 years old it really sings.
Regarding the 70s tele there are 2 things about that guitar that goes against it. 1. It’s a 70’s model so it will never command the value of a 60’s or below date. 2. I too, prefer lighter weight guitars as I think it helps with body resonance and is a plus for adding that zing to a tele. 3. Unless you change out the bridge on these guitars it’s really robs the tele of sustain. I know that you can remedy some of that with locktite on the bridge screws and stuff but even then the bridge design still affects tone in my opinion, I owned a MIJ tele custom with bigsby that was a beautiful guitar but I sold it for that very reason. I just couldn’t bond with it. Great episode. Cheers.
I enjoy your vids. I like the Firebird I too am a Allen Collins fan from way back. Being 56 I say I would have plugged in any amp to see if it worked to. I am a telle guy so any telecaster you showed were my favorite. Keep the vids coming and I hope 2021 gets you out playing and sharing your music. I enjoy hearing it
Happy New Year Matthew, so glad to have found your channel. I have grown tired of guitar snobs criticizing anything that has been modded or personalized. Player guitars carry their history with them and you do a terrific job of showing us that a road-worn smoke stained mix up of parts can add up to amazing tones and better stories than any collector grade instrument. Wish you nothing but the best brother.

Truthfully all 10 of my favorites especially the Mary Kaye Strat that actually looked like a poly refinish compared to the latest refinishing that suits it the best, the '64 Firebird that looks exactly like it was custom ordered and built in Kalamazoo (a 'custom-made' plaque would be perfect!), the Gibson Explorer amp sounds incredible w/the bigger speaker, the '58 Strat hardtail w/the '64 neck and modernly loaded pickguard definitely has a nice tone... anyhoo here's to the new finds and new projects for 2021 aka two kings and a blackjack!
Very cool stuff! Can't believe how good that Dove sounds. I come from an acoustic fingerpickin' background, and Gibsons of this era are not typically the greatest in terms of sound. I've only watched a few of your videos by now, will be watching more of course, but wanted to offer some advice. You obviously know your stuff, or are willing to learn if you don't. Plus you're an excellent player! My hope is that you dig as deeply into the music part as you are into the gear part. There's a huge world of great stuff out there when you get off the beaten track, away from the Claptons and Hendrixs of the world. That's the obvious stuff. Dig into the stuff that influenced them, and who influenced those people. You'll discover people like Lonnie Johnson, who it could be argued invented the guitar solo as we know it today, and did it playing a 12-string. He's on Louis Armstrong records, the good ones from the 20's. There are lots of people like that, overshadowed by the legend of Robert Johnson, who was great and all, but just one of thousands of guys doing it, some of whom were recorded. I gravitate towards musicians like Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Richard Thompson, bands like NRBQ, XTC, Tower of Power, the Meters, pretty much anything and everything genre-wise if it's good. Right now what I'm diggin' most is some Lindley live shows from the 80's where he's doing insane Arabic sounding things to some Silvertone (he's much more than the slide player from "Runnin' On Empty"). That music? I guess it's sorta reggae/pop/roots/world? It's the playing, and the quality of the material and band... The MUSIC! Sorry, got off on a tangent there! Again, loving your channel and all the best in all you do!
Matthew, Allen Collins, was one of the Best Guitar Players in My Book , Very Underrated , Could you do a deal on how he played? I got to meet him @ Funnochios Bar in Atlanta, 1972 the night that Al Cooper was there , and signed them on a Record Deal, I love your Channel, Cousin Figel
Love your content as always Matthew. Really, really like the red partscaster with the hard tail. Love your enthusiasm and honesty. Your are an inspiration. PEACE 🤠🎸
Really nice to see an upload from you. I think you need to make some more lick lessons, that intro was sick. I see you added some fuzz to the bass, good decision. 2020 has certainly been a hell of a ride, and it was a hell of a journey with these amazing pieces of guitar history and your playing. Have a very Happy New Year and a great start to 2021! ✌️✌️✌️
Can you please show all the steps of the Strat neck refret? Would love to see the crowning, dressing and polishing steps. I’m starting to learn to do that stuff on my guitars and trying to get as many perspectives on it as I can. Thanks!!

It sure sounded nice!
Which one?🤣🤣
Long time subscriber,just like you I’m a sucker for strats but lately I’m getting in to some country stuff,and I bought a acoustic,gues what,a Dove,guess again...not Gibson:)
Btw that tele sounds like a million bucks dude.
Have a better 2021 than 2020 pal
Your passion for all these instruments shines through! Here’s wishing you a fabulous 2021. Looking forward to more videos.
PS my fave is the 58 LP Special. 😍
By far a tie the barn find Fender amp and Goodwill. Awsome licks.
Happy New Year Matthew. Really enjoyed your videos this year and look forward to many more in ‘21 😁
Many more in 21!
Fun video---congrats on some great gear selections, the hardtail Strat is gorgeous!
Love that Gibson Dove can't wait to buy my first Gibson acoustic
Awesome collection and thank you so much for such great content! definitely helped a lot of us get through 2020, and now 2021!
The Firebird turned out beautiful. I gonna be great to see the Special done.✌🏻
Old Smokey, Telecaster,, That is a great one for sure.
Love your playing, historic findings, and vibes man! Keep it up! Love to check up in once in a while lol! So envious that you're able to find all of these really awesome treasures lol! May 2021 bring you more fortune and good findings! Keep sharing these stories and knowledge with us bud!
Thanks for the recap Matthew. Can't wait to see the Goodwill LP when it's done. Happy New year
Your playing is insane!
Thanks Matt. Nice vid, you did do pretty well this year finding gear and that is cool.
Love your content as always Matthew. Really, really like the red partscaster with the hard tail.
Love your enthusiasm and honesty.
Your are an inspiration.
PEACE 🤠🎸
You got me wanting a Firebird now. Happy New Year!
Keep up the good work Kid , always love your videos 👍
Great video. I thought the Firebird 1 would have come in top; definitely a keeper.
Sweet guitars man, my vintage gem is an 87 G&L Invader in rampage red!
I love your channel dude! You seem super chill and are a damn good player!
Thanks!!
cant wait until the 2021 edition of this video!
The les paul deffenatly #1. Thanks for sharing
