what a knowledgeable dude, im very impressed with the explanations. Bravo . you can actually "work" the flex out of the blade with practice which makes it so bloody cool for a weapon that size.

The Doppelsöldner were Landsknecht who got paid double the amount of regular Landsknecht mercenaries. They were not soldiers due to not belonging to any certain military. They were men for hire, servants of the land and represented for example almost the entirety of the Holy Roman Army during the 17th century as a militia. They also were not any kind of "last resort". Doppelsöldner formed the Landsknecht front lines with the zweihänder swords and arquebus guns protecting the pike Landsknecht and forming together "pike and shot" formations.
The most notable thing here is though that the sword is not, as you said yourself, a zweihänder so that type of sword never even went close to the Doppelsöldner. The zweihänder were much thinner from the blade than the lowlander presented on the video, they also had a long Ricasso with parrying hooks and they had slide rings on the cross guard.

Kinda depends honestly. There was a lot of diversity in their kit and how they were deployed. Also depends a lot on period, as they were around for like 150 years in one for or another.

@@Dangerousswordsman No it does not. Landsknecht, Doppelsöldner and Zweihänder are all designations, which have their own unique place in the european history.
You couldn't use the zweihänder in similar tactics like the lowlander due to the parrying hooks on the Ricasso. The zweihänder had a breaching purpose, it was made for cutting spear heads by sweeping attacks from the Landsknecht front lines.
The sword you presented in the video really is an lowlander replica and like the description of a Cas/Hanwei "Gaelic Claymore" states the lowlanders were used in Scotland by scottish Swords for Hire in Gaelic Battlefields - not by Landsknecht Doppelsöldners.
But really nice cuts, couldn't even see the canister shaking.

thinking about getting a Zweihander. Is this a good one? or is there another brand you would reccomend?? Also, what sharpness should these things be in comparasion to a longsword? more, less or same?

I'm in no shape or form an expert, on the contrary, but wouldn't it be better to instead of just dropping that heavy sword to use it first as a lever, a log even, to bind up and push aside the pikes before reaching for the side arm? Also, you did touch on the pushing aside, for me it makes more sense rather then try to go in urself with your , compared to a pike, short weapon have your pikemen exploit gap that is created by your weapon. Because as far as I saw and can imagine pike on pike blok is basicaly mutually assured impalement, so it would be advantageous to have an few burly boys to push the pikes aside with a greatsword buy purposefully hacking into the opposing pike shafts (a halberd and billhook also seems to be a good choice) and then pikes have free lane to poke?

I have it . Once I was cleaning my home . I step on top of my coffee table where I put that sword on to dust top of book shelve . Coffe table broke . Sword fall from 2 feet on my foot . I couldn't stop the bleeding for 20 min . It almost nicked my aorta . So I duct tape towel to my foot and drove to hospital 15 min away . Point is ladies and gentlemen - cleaning your man cave can be dangerous lol

I like cutting demonstrations that follow from more complex moves. I think this should be a goal in cutting once you know the basics. 👍

@Dangerousswordsman hahahahaha 🤣 ok you got me there. The bards don't seem to favor songs about your average humble foot soldier. It's all you 7 foot tall Chads swinging your greatswords around that get immortalized 😄

If you would charge a Pike block alone with such a sword strike the pikes to the site someone could easily just retract the pike and than pike you much quicker than you could swing your sword. That would only work if you have support from other pikes as well and you attack their pikes (not their heads as you would have to be much too close) for your pikes to push foreward in a highly combined attack. Maybe try some sparing with one and 2-3 people with long sticks on the opposing sites and they are actually moving you would easily see how difficult the hole thing would be you are demonstrating.

100% agree. A specialist soldier like this needs support or will be blown to oblivion. The montante was not the primary weapon of the time for a reason. Just like the cannon, the lance, or the sailing ship. All have their place but are not great without the support of more regular infantry.

do heavy squats, make your entire body stronger, then the sword won't be heavy.
