  • So what is the difference between you and a rock? This seems like an easy, even stupid question. But even the smartest people on earth have no idea where to draw the line between living and dead things. Which leads to mind-blowing implications. What is life after all? And is death really a thing? Lets look into it together

The best definition of life I've ever heard is "Something is alive when it knows it doesn't want to die."
Edit: I've been suicidal so I speak from personal experience when I say that suicidal people don't want to die. They just want their pain to end and see suicide as the only way to do that.

Cool, now you've just got to define "knowing" which will inevitable require you to define "consciousness" which will inevitably require you to define "sentience" and/or "sapience". Like, does an amoeba know that it doesn't want to die? What about a plant or a fungus or a mould? All of them are definitely alive, but none of them have brains, which would seem to preclude them from "knowing" something without a particularly broad definition of "knowing" (and even then, its something of a stretch to suggest that they are conscious of the inevitability of their own demise).

    • @lordrorek1907
      @lordrorek1907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

@@smockboy I define any type of survival instinct as "knowing".
I use knowing in a very broad and metaphorical way here. It doesn't have to be aware of its own mortality but it has to want to live even if it doesn't have the sentience to understand or even ask why.
Even single celled organisms will run away when under threat and they don't even have brain cells.
That drive to protect one's own existence is how I define "alive" because only a living thing can have that drive.

    • @Godshand2

@Scravers no.. not exactly, computers are advanced sure, but they are understandable, even our bodies and brains can be understood in every process, we are more similar to computers than we'd like to imagine, turning on specific tiny lights at given times takes some really advanced technology, we've made great strides in that area over the past 100 years from when circuitry was first invented, and humans largely work the same way, we need electricy to function, our body is comprised of machinery that is so small and so advanced its almost impossible to comprehend how efficiently it works, but like computers we have coding as well (dna) bad code creates glitches (mutations) we can't function if we're too cold or too hot we have a heating and cooling system, our energy is derived from compatible fuel sources, we run on so much energy that compared to a regular computer we degrade over a number of decades, like we run on so much energy that our bodies are constantly warm, and our brains perform very basic functions driven by complex machinery... but none of this, not a single thing that I mentioned... explains this machines ability to experience and be an individual everything else is physically possible and explainable with biology, chemistry and physics... not conciousness... also funny thing you already know what it's like to die: 1: you were dead before birth, 2: you die everytime you go to sleep and don't dream, (if youre dreaming you're still partially conciouss, meaning your brain isn't actually properly sleeping but do dip in and out) your conciouss self is essentially gone, which is why when you wake up you don't even remember falling asleep, nor do you remember sleeping, because none of the physical functions of the brain are being used which is of course: memory, vision, hearing etc. That state, where you dont remember a thing, thats what death is like, you won't even know you're dead, when people joke that dead people are just sleeping that isnt a joke, that's actually the truth, your body is just incapable of waking you up again. You can destroy the machine... but what tf was the machine being driven by.. People are iffy when it comes to souls because they say its not scientific but... if such a thing exists, it would be scientific fact, you cant prove it though because if the physical universe can't explain consciousness, then such a thing wouldn't exist in the physical world.. that being said I think all religions are completely wrong and such a thing if it exists, would not be connected to an afterlife or gods or legends, but to an isolated phenomena. Lemme know what you think.

+Jombo Just know this: everything you consider as life is a collection of data, through memory, that can actively be questioned/manipulated by conscious thought. Now, that effectively means "conscious life" is the questioning of it: that struggle, to abstract from instinct when instinct is all that's needed. It also means "life" is effectively the making memories that stand the test of time. Think of the concept of memes from mgs4...

This might actually be the most thought provoking Kurzgesagt video I've seen yet. I mean, the part at the end really hit me. Everything in the universe is made of the same stuff, so either everything is living or everything is dead. This makes me think that overall life is solely about complexity. And if this is true, does that mean that everything that exists has conscious, just maybe on an immeasurable scale? We know that animals have conscious, we know that insects do as well, but does this ever stop? Does conscious exist in everything, but in most things it's too small for us to understand?

    • @beastmasterbg

or is everything unconcious but just work in a certain way combined in different complexities of cells and materials. Is your pc concious when it runs different parts and you see windows or are you seeing electrical parts work together to display pixels in a certain way using electricity.

@@joshuaholmberg2042 C'mon science is not opposite to god concept. Many scientists were believers of some kind of supreme entity. Of course that's not what you meant, is my own complementary idea, which is an old idea about the concept of god. There's a lot of examples in literature, movies, philosophy, etc. Check it out, your comment is very close to that idea of consciousness - god. God as complexity is the ultimate, maybe infinit unification of everything that exists in the universe and we are part of it.

      @joshuaholmberg2042 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@carlosgil9886 true that science isn't *opposite* to god, but they definitely aren't too similar, because science is fact based and God is just belief. And now rereading my comment, I didn't actually mean "consciousness", just "life/being alive", not being sentient. And yes, many scientists were believers of God, but that's mostly in older times when if you didn't believe then you could be imprisoned or worse (Galileo, for example). And tbh I don't really wanna get into an internet argument, so we can just respect each other's separate opinions on this.

As where on a physical realm, we will never really get to study the properties of the spiritual realm, what we see is only the realm of the intersection of the four laws of Physics -time, space, force, and matter. As a matter of fact, Science is a body of knowledge but the nature of science is it can't provide answers to all questions.
What makes life life is its existence, its complexity, and the smart design that even the binary code of the computer is no match to the quarternary code of the DNA which points that a creator being is existent and made everything according to His good purpose, pleasure and will.

I'd argue that the "magic" of humanity is mostly just in the idea that we've gone from being self-aware, to basically being aware of *everything*. The fact that we have the capability to understand and question our own role in the universe, and that the only other sort of being we've witnessed that engages with consciousness and existentialism in the same way is something we're in the process of CREATING shows something "Special" about humanity.
Granted, there may be other species out there in the universe with similar understandings, but that doesn't make us less special. That just means that there are other groups that are just as special as us.

If the universe came about by random chance and everything is just meaningless, purposeless, blindly bumping chemicals, then things like justice, good, evil, beauty are just an illusion. Yet they do exist. Think about it. The purely materialistic worldview of the universe cannot be true. This is one of the most simplest arguments about it.

***** "Because no serious person ever said that we are "a bag of meaningless chemicals", nor that "the universe came about by random chance" and "everything is meaningless, purposeless, blindly bumping chemicals, then things like justice, good, evil, beauty are just an illusion"."
Actually a lot of people say that, and those beliefs themselves are conjectures that equal correlation to causation and being, and they're also based on other conjectures taken for granted.
Should I remind you that if we're just chemicals then things such as knowledge, truth, logic, everything that makes you think that we are chemicals and even thinking itself is just a chemical. Yet what is a chemical? A name to something perceived by a human.

Here, Allah reminds us that we all, collectively as a human race, have a shared destiny with death - none can escape it. What remains for us to do, then, is to ensure we are truly living lives worthy of worshipping and loving Allah. We musn’t fall into the trap of believing this temporal world is worth risking our relationship with Allah.

@@ImWeedbtw The Koran claims for itself that it is 'mubeen,' or 'clear,' but if you look at it, you will notice that every fifth sentence or so simply doesn't make sense. Many Muslims-and Orientalists-will tell you otherwise, of course, but the fact is that a fifth of the Koranic text is just incomprehensible. This is what has caused the traditional anxiety regarding translation. If the Koran is not comprehensible-if it can't even be understood in Arabic-then it's not translatable. People fear that. And since the Koran claims repeatedly to be clear but obviously is not-as even speakers of Arabic will tell you-there is a contradiction. Something else must be going on.

I think whatever happened in this video - thinking about more questions - is what life itself is, in essence.
It might seem that having all the answers would make life better, but I don't think so. Internet is the best example. We used to think that not having knowledge is the problem, but now because of the internet the problem is "knowledge overload".
Whereas, Being left with more questions made me feel like I want to live until the time I get the answers.
That's why information processing is so fundamental in us.
"We are the universe's way of understanding itself".
And life will keep evolving till it does that. It might understand itself through science or spirituality. Nevertheless, once it is figured out it would perish eventually, because it would not be fun anymore. Just like we restart a video game after completing it. Coz it's no fun, or not for long, after being completed.

Seems to me like life and death are illusions, just definitions we impose on our views of the world. I think the only thing that can be said for certain is that 'we are'.

The argument is irrelevant either way. I only feel that if the answer was, "we are not," I would be experiencing anything at all. I never said the world or any experience the individual has is real. The only true statement you can say is, "I am." There's no way of knowing if there's anything outside of yourself, at least through the facet of the mind.

@@_emminowithoutl4995 My brother in humanity, that is not a nice thing to say. If you're gonna have a bad opinion on our religion or prophet(s), keep it to yourself. We don't need to hear it.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must either speak good or remain silent."
It's fine if you are not interested in Islam, but at least do some research to be informed before saying things are straight up untrue.

Even though cells are so small that they cannot be seen without a microscope and cannot be felt at all, 1 decillion of them would still look mind-bogglingly massive to a person.
