We have a lot in common, I found them through The Egg too and also have ADHD and am Autistic. Haha we certainly are a niche demographic but here we are ♡
I am not my body, I am my consciousness. My body is simply the tool with which my consciousness experiences, manipulates and moves through the world. You can replace every part of my body with something else, and I'd still be 'me', as long as I experience continuity of consciousness, and none of the replacements affect the thoughts that make up my consciousness.
Hm… large parts of body might affect how you think about yourself and how you experience the world, so a lot of your body affects (not effects) your thoughts.
Don't worry, only the really great thinkers tend to get depressed from these questions. Common men can't appreciate the terror of the question of existence.

it's been 32 years since I got stuck in the loop, I pressed a CGP gray video, and then I moved to a kurzgeasgt video from the CGP gray video, and then it was the same CGP cray video, I'm stuck in an eternal loop.
these videos are the best to watch while eating, like i can feel the food being chewed in my mouth, feel them going down my throat and give me feelings that i can't explain
I love watching this channel it always feeds my curiosity for the bigger picture. I know many ppl say these videos gives them existential dread but I love it cause it really puts into prespective how amazing just existence is and how easily we forget that getting caught up in minor details and the issues in society. It's nice to give your brain a break and enjoy being.
I feel the same way! These videos makes me feel a sense of comfort in a way and makes me forget about the problems i have in life. Learning and knowledge are a really great thing it makes me appreciative of my very existence and I'm happy as well that we were able to evolve into such amazing species starting right down from how we survived and become who we are in the present to how these survival mechanisms made us able to invent, create, and form new things that is able to further advance us in our life but these inventions are the very thing that is also harming our planet earth Sorry from my poor english, it isn't my first language and I'm still learning about it. I have a lot to learn.
Lol, just make your own purpose. Can't cry for what you were given in the first place. That is a parallel between Existentialism and the view of Alan Watts. (Dunno his philosophy).
As the video stated, this topic leaves science and enters philosophy. This has been a long standing philosophical question usually know as Ship of Theseus. The original question was: if you gradually replace every part of a ship, is it still the same ship? Heraclitus was also perceptive enough, depsite not having the knowledge of modern science, to suggest that since we're perpetually chaning, we don't actually have identities. "You can never enter the same river, since the water is always moving". Thus he said that "nothing is, but everything is becoming." One of his students, who's name escapes my memory at the moment, went even furhter and jokingly said that since names are attached to identity and we have no lasting identity, we shouldn't even name things, but simply point in them. (Kind of reminds me of that passage from '100 Years of Solitude' when Marquez writes: "It was back in the days when a lot of things weren't named yet and we had to point at everything"). Another philosophical reference I rememebr is that of Marcus Aurelius in his "Meditations" who takes the view expressed in the video around 05:27, that since we all share the same elements and atoms (which at that point was thought to be undivisable (the meaning of the word atom) and eternal), our identity remains in them even after our death. Another view on the subject, also mentioned in the video, is that identity from the very get go was a mistaken concept. This view has been held by certain religions in Eastern Asia, such as certain types of Buddhism and Hinduism, and is also thoroughly discussed in Herman Hesse's "Steppenwolf". My own personal opinion is that identities are simply useful. Somewhat of a pragmatic view. As Bertran Russell said "matter is simply a convenient way of grouping events" so is identity a quite handy tool in order to actually avoid simply pointing at stuff. Alternatively one could say that the illusion of identity, if it is indeed an illusion, is so strong that for us it may as well be true. Once again, this a sort of pragmatism of Peirce and James, but in this insatnce I'm willing to subscribe to it. I am a completely different person, both physically and mentally, from that time when I deposited money into my bank account, but let me pretend for the sake of convenience that I'm the same person, so I can have the money to buy things...
Very well thought-out comment. Reminds me of the way Alan Watts put it: "The feeling that we have of an enduring organism -- I meet you today and I see you, and then tomorrow I meet you again, and you look pretty much as you looked yesterday, and so I consider that you're the same person, but you aren't. Not really. When I watch a whirlpool in a stream, here's the stream flowing along, and there's always a whirlpool like the one at Niagara. But that whirlpool never, never really holds any water. The water is all the time rushing through it. In the same way, a university, the University of California -- what is it? The students exchange at least every four years; the faculty changes at a somewhat slower rate; the building changes, they knock down old ones and put up new ones; the administration changes. So what is the University of California? It's a pattern. A doing of a particular kind. And so in just precisely that way, every one of us is a whirlpool in the tide of existence, and where every cell in our body, every molecule, every atom is in constant flux, and nothing can be pinned down."
I wold say it is your continued consciousness that is you. The rest is what makes it possible for you to be you like parts who make a full working car. But if you change to much to quickly you change, You are still you but not the same as before.
The fact that you and CGP Grey did two different videos connecting each other is crazy, when i saw the CGP Grey's version then the switch to you made me feel like god, same the other way around.
I would like to point out that this comment is much deeper than it appears when you think about it. It is easier to deal with absolutes than it is to deal and properly work with foggy/hazy borders. It is also easier to be bad than it is to be good, and less comes from being good than from being bad on an individual scale.
I thought the upload timing was just a lucky coincidence and was about to comment on that... when the voice transitioned to that of CGP grey! (awesome transition BTW!)

You tasting smelling a kiwi would be a different experience from the perfect clone of you smelling that same kiwi right the second after.
The kiwi's composition is ripe a second earlier and the brain chemistry of that clone is different from a second before. Making the Experience non-linear. Making the divergence of consciousness an exponential one even if it came from A perfect clone.

Have you seen the next video 'You are two'? It poses an interesting question on what your consciousness is.

Learning and knowledge are a really great thing it makes me appreciative of my very existence and I'm happy as well that we were able to evolve into such amazing species starting right down from how we survived and become who we are in the present to how these survival mechanisms made us able to invent, create, and form new things that is able to further advance us in our life but these inventions are the very thing that is also harming our planet earth

I'm Fucking angry at them, why the fuck are my cells deciding to keep my useless ass alive
I dont like how the video only focuses on material substance... What do you think about other substances that may form us?
That they don't exist.
Nika Zardiashvili how about no
Very well thought-out comment. Reminds me of the way Alan Watts put it:
"The feeling that we have of an enduring organism -- I meet you today and I
see you, and then tomorrow I meet you again, and you look pretty much
as you looked yesterday, and so I consider that you're the same person,
but you aren't. Not really. When I watch a whirlpool in a stream, here's
the stream flowing along, and there's always a whirlpool like the one
at Niagara. But that whirlpool never, never really holds any water. The
water is all the time rushing through it. In the same way, a university,
the University of California -- what is it? The students exchange at
least every four years; the faculty changes at a somewhat slower rate;
the building changes, they knock down old ones and put up new ones; the
administration changes. So what is the University of California? It's a
pattern. A doing of a particular kind. And so in just precisely that
way, every one of us is a whirlpool in the tide of existence, and where
every cell in our body, every molecule, every atom is in constant
flux, and nothing can be pinned down."
HOLY MACARONY THAT A LOT OF WRITING!!!!
I wold say it is your continued consciousness that is you. The rest is what makes it possible for you to be you like parts who make a full working car. But if you change to much to quickly you change, You are still you but not the same as before.
agreed
nice analogy. For instance, if you change the wheel of your car, it still remains your car
But do you then die every time you go to sleep, because the consciousness is not continuous anymore?
Actually, you have consciousness while asleep. The brain is still active during sleep but running significantly slower (Since the person is resting).

It is also easier to be bad than it is to be good, and less comes from being good than from being bad on an individual scale.
