    I think the astronomical price was the main factor that doomed the Segway. You can get a decent scooter now for $500 or less.

  • @pookatim
    @pookatim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    One major issue was that it was not suitable to use in traffic nor safe to use on sidewalks with pedestrians. So basically, it wasn't safe to use anywhere as a form of transport. Even electric scooters have the advantage of being narrow. The Segway is wide and the wheels form a hazard to pedestrians. It was also heavy and could really injure someone if they were struck by it.

    • @TheLillianYoung
      @TheLillianYoung 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always rode mine on the sidewalk. It was very safe as it could be ridden at a pedestrian's pace.

    I have three old Segways, one is plugged in and in running condition, the others simply need batteries. My wife is handicapped and prefers using them to wheelchairs. We have switched to Air Wheels, which are similar but not as heavy, and have only three moving parts - two hub motors and the steering handle. Each Segway has six spinning gyros and each wheel has its own motor and gear train.

    • @TheLillianYoung
      @TheLillianYoung 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I sold my Segway i2 when the batteries died, but kind of wish I hadn't. I saw a man on one some weeks ago and he said he loves it. So even in 2022 with so many alternaties, that man loved his Segway PT i2. People who are dismissive don't take people like your wife into consideration. I'm glad you found an alternative for her though. I was just disappointed that it didn't evolve. It's also odd to me to call Ninebot's toys "Segways" considering the high grade quality of real Segways.

    I've been using these things at work for a while and the models we have, have ironed out all the issues. If the Segway even smells a potential error, it buzzes at you to get off and then shuts down.
    Also riding on them feels so great, leaning controls means you don't have to think about it and can just focus on something else.
    Shame that it got such bad PR due to unaddressed errors early on.

    Interesting video. I was around 22 years old when I first saw them and in no way did I ever have any desire to have one. I could see the logic for airport staff using them to get around a large airport or police using them maybe but I couldn't see anything they could offer that a bicycle couldn't, and a bicycle was far cheaper. Even my first car cost me only $2000, and it ran for years. I wouldn't have used a Segway even if it was free, and I don't know anyone who did.

This skateboard is faster, cheaper, keeps one hand free to hold things and it doesn't have the same dork-factor though I certainly looked like an idiot when I first tried it and let out a girly scream as it accelerated from under me.

    I owned the Segway PT i2 and saw one a few weeks ago in NY. I ride electric unicycles now but loved my high quality Segway and hate that Ninebot, the maker of cheap plastic, uses the "Segway" name. I think Segway PTs became dated with slow speeds and smaller micro mobility. But NONE to date have the same self balancing tech + quality. Show people falling who didn't learn properly - okay. But not one Segway PT exploded. The Segway PT was genius but didn't evolve.

    my experience with Segway Elite is not good. Ninebot mini Pro is much safer because knees control. I find that knees control is much better in every way than 2 hands.
    Also wheels in Elite are to big for transport but mini Pro to small comparing to Elite. Best would be Ninebot mini Pro with bigger wheels, more power motor, bigger battery, of course knees control and new way of transport handling. Between 2 wheels should be handle to close platform on the way that wheels come closer and whole ninebot become much more narrow as a big bag.

    Everyone always assumes it was the price and there is no doubt it was a factor. But if there is extremely limited use for your product to begin with when it comes to the consumer market, even extremely aggressive pricing may not be much help. Consider it in real terms: Imagine it was some how possible they cut the price by 50 percent down to 2,500 USD. How many consumers would pay that for a something that would essentially amount to a toy that they would probably be bored with in a month? The market share for which ownership would be practical, was just too small.

    It wasn’t safety compatible on streets or sidewalks and it wasn’t practical transportation. Many people live more than 12 miles from the grocery store or their workplace and there’s no way you can safely carry groceries on one. Furthermore, Segway wasn’t addressing an unmet need. We already had practical transportation that was meeting our needs, whether it be a car, bicycle, or scooter.

    Seemed to be mainly for people too lazy to pedal a bike. Only they were exponentially more expensive, more unwieldy, and way heavier than a bike. If you needed to lift them up a few stairs or even a curb it was a deal-breaker. Why did anyone ever think they would be a good idea?

    just because some innovative mobility device like the Segway is not PERFECT doesn't mean it's totally useless because simply all devices, mobile, computer, cars, airplanes etc also do fail, don't they? it's mostly the consuming, especially the prosumer market culture that's always looking for the BEST, while that word is perhaps the worst one humanity has ever created really ...
    it just reminds me of how zeppelins (blimps) became such a forgotten memory because of the (in)famous Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937 ... then airplanes replaced zeppelins, naturally, because airplanes are faster and carry more passengers per trip on a much smaller vehicle (although also much heavier too!) while also not costing too much on the average ... but are airplanes SAFE too? how `bout cars? bicycles and bikes? trains or what have you!? even our bedrock planet, our most versatile vehicle moving us through the space and within the universe isn't safe, is it?

      I can't speak to the company ninebot is today, but I can tell you one of the most fun vehicles I've ever tried was the ninebot e+ electric unicycle released in 2015.
      For its time, the thing was a marvel. It was darn near bulletproof and could take a ton of abuse, could be ridden on trails, and even in light rain. Granted it doesn't hold up to today's electric unicycles which are considerably faster and have more range, but today's wheels are also considerably bulkier and heavier than ever. At 118 lbs, one of them (The Master Pro) weighs even more than the original Segway! Overall the e+ is still one of the lightest weight and portable transportation solutions ever made.

    People don't expect to jump on a bicycle and ride it perfectly the first time. They shouldn't expect to ride any other vehicle perfectly the first time either. Segway are easy enough to ride for anyone with decent coordination. Uncoordinated people should stay away from bicycles, or any other riding devices and not film themselves being idiots and criticize the vehicle.
