Can't understand why some of these patterns have slipped under the radar. That Mochiknits vest is so classy. Looking at her other patterns on Ravelry, they are absolutely charming and appealing. I am really grateful for this video! I’m in the Northern Hemisphere but spring here in London is very similar- it can be coldish in the mornings at 11-12° and then a warm 24° within the afternoon. We get sunshine interspersed with torrential rainfall, a super hot underground commute and then blasting AC in offices.
Another great video - I live in Canada and really enjoy knitting lighter weight garments for the winter because they fit under the obligatory down jacket which needs to be worn outdoors.
Oh yes that's a good point, I hadn't thought of that!
I live in the Central Highlands of Victoria where it is much colder than most of Australia (we occasionally snow during Winter) and still prefer fingering weight jumpers. As I’m sensitive to all fibres (except cotton), I need to wear a long sleeve T-shirt under my jumpers. I find fingering weight sweaters are more effective at accommodating layering and tend to look more professional. They do take longer to make but are worth the effort IMO. I have recently made the Brooklyn Raglan Light (Long Sleeves) in Lilac and have been wearing it constantly since I finished it.
The Brooklyn Raglan would look gorgeous in Lilac! And hopefully you can get away with washing your garments much less with your long sleeve shirt underneath.

Thank you for your tie to research those projects. I've always loved vests. I've made several for my partner and myself. They just always provide just the right layer when a sweater would be to heavy.

I find fingering weight yarn for jumpers/sweaters perfect in the southern climate of Victoria. It's easy to layer.
This video was just at the right time as I’m considering a Vest for our climate here, it’s a garment I reach for especially in the mornings coming into winter. You chose some lovely patterns with variety and I did find a couple that I would consider making, lighter 4/5ply is perfect! Thanks Nadine. ❤

Hi from a UK subscriber, who loves the colder months, eg Autumn and Winter so am so loving this podcast! We are sadly moving toward the hottest season (Summer), which I do dread and dislike! I know our Summers don't get as hot as you Summers, but I do still dislike the heat! It means sweaty fingers and squeaky needles! Not nice at all! Roll on the Autumn for here in the UK! Thank you for this. I think your advice is also valid for our English "summer". Mornings can be cool and the temperature can drop in the evenings. I've knit a long sleeved cotton mix sweater to layer over my summer tops.

Thank you for another delightful episode. Love the spotlight on less patronised patterns; there are some real gems out there that deserve to be discovered. Lace patterned cardis and jumpers are a good weight for our winters too.. I'm test knitting a cardi that is a mix of lace and garter, using 4ply held together with mohair.
Wow that sounds totally gorgeous - and the garter would be a nice little 'brain break' from the lace!

I want to take this opportunity to share a designer who’s a friend of mine and I know you’ve knitted before, Pope (pronounced Pop-eh) Vergara. She’s a Chilean designer who’s changed the knitting game here in Chile, because she knits with beads. Her designs are very fun to knit and to plan because of the many different ways you can personalize them. She recently came out with a whole collection of designs inspired by Dragon Scales, with a kimono, vest, cowl and stole. She has cardigans, pullovers, hats, shirts and shawls that can be playful or sophisticated depending on your taste and choice of materials. My personal favorite is the Heaven Cardigan, which is made with two strands of mohair for a light fabric but a strand can be substituted with another lace weight yarn for more warmth, and has a beautiful design of beads along the back, bottom and cuffs. And since you talked about vests I cannot help but mention the Bee Vest, which is very playful with colorful bees along the body made of beads. I really recommend checking her work out to anyone that wants to add a fun detail to their knits!

Agree more content applicable for us in the southern hemisphere. Here in the coastal SE of SA we are 85% of the year in mid 20s or less only.

Thank you for these recommendations Nadine! I love the idea of shouting out lesser known or new patterns. The Brooklyn Raglan is probably my favourite! I've almost finished knitting a fingering weight sweater and I think it will work across a range of seasons in Melbourne.

Interesting suggestions! I love the construction of the cardis, which is also something I love about Joji's patterns, not only are they well written , but her construction methods are always so interesting. I have test knit some of her patterns, and always enjoy them. She is one of the few designers for whom I can get gauge right off; but, the arms I do find a bit more snug (has nothing to do with my....er, beefy biceps I'm sure 😎). She is also a southern hemisphere person, but does a pattern sale every No. Hem. Fall for her knitalongs she holds for September - November, so you can grab some more then. And I agree on the underlayers as well; a great option to pop under a buttoned shirt or a cardi in the chilly times (or the a/c in the shops).
How wonderful! I didn't realise she was a fellow southern hemisphere knitter. I will definitely keep an eye out for her pattern sale and will likely stock right up 😃 (Ps the 🦾 comment had me cackling!!)

I loved all your choices! You are so organized and thoughtful about your selections. I feel like my choices are all based on some sort of dreamy atmospheric weird moody theme that brings on feelings of nostalgia or deep longing or some other intangible quality. What I end up with always falls short (except for a few fantastic exceptions!) but I can’t seem to change. I’m ordinarily a very rational, grounded person so maybe knitting for me is nothing more than an outlet for my creative, dreamy side that doesn’t get expressed any other way. Lol

PS my partner also likes plain sweaters but I did him one with faux seams on the shoulder and body and he loved that one so maybe you can sneak in something subtle like that 😁
How fantastic - I love the idea of using your knitting as a whimsical creative outlet! I think I'm kind of similar, in a way - very organised and methodical in work and life but CHAOTIC in my knitting 😂 it makes it so fun! Faux seams sound like a gorgeous detail for your partner's sweater - definitely one to keep in mind ☺

Your videos are so relaxing. I have a v neck semper pullover vest saved on ravelry. Every time I think I’m ready to knit a garment, I chicken out.
The v neck version looks so beautiful! I totally know what you mean - I chickened out for YEARS every time I went to knit a garment (seriously - no exaggeration!) I stuck with scarves and little blankets for the longest time. But garments are just so much fun to knit and wear. I think you'll be well and truly addicted after your first garment ☺ happy knitting!!

That was really great that you were looking at the fashions in style now, pointing out the monochrome colour and then coming up with a colour palette. That is so helpful as I am very colour challenged when it comes to choosing yarn colours. I actually just bought what looked like pink in the store and it was definitely purple when I got it home. So I was thinking of taking a colour chart to the store to compare to the yarn as the lighting is sometimes off. Great pattern choices and I will definitely look them up. It would be awesome if you would do a KAL at some point - maybe with the vest with the cables. Cheers !
Ooooo a KAL would be so much fun! A colour chart is a fantastic idea. I have the same trouble when I walk into the yarn store with a colour in mind (but no reference point) and end up walking out with something completely different 😂

I made the dk weight Brooklyn Raglan and loved the pattern and the result but it’s way too heavy, even for Melbourne. The Brooklyn Lite is definitely a better option for warmer climes!
