    Really interesting, Nadine. I love to learn how things work behind the scene. I can tolerate TH-cam ads, but I’m more annoyed by podcasters who push products (yarn, beauty products, etc.) than I am by those TH-cam ads.

    A very interesting podcast! I always wondered what was in it for podcasters. Ads are a necessary evil in my opinion. As far as I can remember, there were only 2 or 3 in this whole episode, quite well spread out. I wish you well in your journey.

    Interesting info! I have found my overall TH-cam experience lately has been much more ad-heavy, so I think when there's any flexibility in a channel's ad parameters that YT will push more if they can.
    The biggest irritation with ads is having to stop knitting to click on Skip! That being said, I think we all realize that it's only fair to the Podcaster to earn something. Twice per video seems very fair. I've had some channels lately pushing about 10 ad breaks and that just makes a viewer crazy. I appreciate you putting this together, and also thank you for caring about our viewing experience 😊

    How refreshing! Such honesty and openness, thank you so much for this video! We all wondered…. But didn’t ask. I NEVER WATCH THE ADS, that is my time to bend over and get something or adjust something - they are annoying buy part of the package - we get it - don’t worry - you are so refreshing - we just love coming back - Georgia in BC Canada

    thorough and informative video. 26:28 While I don’t love ad breaks, I can appreciate that even hobby creators have expenses and put a great deal of effort into their videos. Thank you so much for this episode Nadine, so informative, you have inspired me to look into monetising my own podcast and given me just the right amount of food for thought on that subject. Researching tech stuff is not my strong point, so when someone can put all you need to know into a lovely little nutshell, it is really so helpful!
    And for my contribution on the subject of ads, like some of the other comments below, I would of course prefer to watch a podcast uninterrupted by ads, but don't mind one or two interruptions especially if there is an option to skip, and if there isn't, I tend to get up and pop the kettle on at that point! I learn such a lot from other contributors here on you tube, and if they are able to earn a little from one of two ads in order to put their content up here, then I feel that is a happy medium. I am also ok with affiliate links that are relevant to the content of the podcast - they can often be very helpful and can save people lots of internet-trawling/ decision making time and viewers can use them or not, of course, so it's totally optional. Thanks again for your time, content and information and for a lovely podcast, I look forward to the next knit catch-up x Kate

    Thanks very much for this Nadine. It's something I've always been interested in. I had actually started to try to find information about this simply because the ad situations on some channels are so annoying. I now understand that this might be something about which the podcaster is totally unaware. Your suggestion of two ad breaks during a video is very reasonable. Interestingly, I only had one during this video and one at the end. Something I've always been interested in is whether you can control the volume of ads. They would be so much less intrusive for late-night viewing if they weren't so loud.

    New viewer-fascinating topic! a bespoke ad, for a company you’d use the product, is great because I suspect you’d get paid or get products (like yarn) in kind. Personally I prefer one interruption for say 30 minutes in addition to an intro or outro ad. Good luck!

    Hello Nadine, Thank you for your openness and honesty about TH-cam and how it works for all of you podcasters. Sounds like a bunch of rigmarole for you!!! As for me, I enjoyed way-back-when, when we didn’t even have to worry about things called ads on TH-cam. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t mind having you speak about your sponsor up front, as long as it was knitting or crafting related. What I really struggle with is selling jewelry, make-up, clothing or things that have no relation to what the podcast is about. Then maybe you could place an ad more toward the end, if that works? You are the only podcaster, that I am aware of, that has even talked about this and is genuinely interested in what your viewers think and our opinions. Thank you for that thoughtfulness.

    Hi Nadine. This was so interesting to watch - thank you SO much for it - for taking the time to research it, present it to us and explain what you found! I have been wondering about ads on TH-cam generally and why sometimes there’s heaps and some channels have few, and one I watch weekly has no ads at all! I’ve been trying to work out if it’s the time of day I watch, the popularity of the channel, the recentness of the episode, and how much it’s controlled by the podcaster, with no conclusions lol . . . When the ads become so frequent they interrupt the flow of the video (like, every 5 mins!) I can’t watch it and stop watching that channel usually, sometimes permanently and l end up unsubscribing, which is disappointing as I love the content of the ones I watch. Since you’ve adjusted yours it’s a pleasure to watch! I couldn’t say what’s an acceptable quantity, but I tend to agree with a lot of the other comments that two ad breaks maybe, beginning and end, if we have to have any at all haha! Thank you again. Jen xx

    I think, given the time it takes to make videos, and the equipment you need to buy in advance, you make less than $10 per hour, so I hope you enjoy knitting and building a community of like-minded people, rather than trying to make a career of it. Love the inside look on how it all works. I don’t mind a few ads and feel like that is helping you, the producer of the content but agree that it is good if they are thoughtfully placed. I have watched podcasts where an add interrupt a statement or section that seems very disruptive. I would like to know if you get paid more if we watch the ad vs. choose to skip it. On longer podcasts I try to use the ad time to get a new cup of tea and will just let the ad run.
    Would love to have a podcast about what other podcasts you enjoy, how you keep up with them all, etc.

    Thanks for the explanation and for asking our preferences. I don’t like when podcasters do their own ads. There are a lot at present promoting crafty and skill share learning platforms. I switch off mentally and sometimes physically as the calm creative mood has been spoilt for me. I don’t mind is crafters promote products that have been donated to them as the one I watch always provide a realistic review of the crafty experience and sometimes wearability down the track. Two ad breaks are fine.

    Initially I was getting frustrated with the channels that had ads for well over 20s before you can skip. However it also depends what I’m doing as I can wait until the ads to do something I need to do. I think it’s probably better than ads every couple of minutes to schedule them for every ten minutes even with the 20s time limit. 😊

    It's very interesting to know how monetization on TH-cam works. On some videos I watch, commenters seem to think any channel makes the creator instantly wealthy. As for ads, I only ever get 1 ad at the beginning (don't tell TH-cam). It's usually only 5 or 20 seconds. If the youtuber promotes something that doesn't apply to me, I skip it. I don't know whether it's because I've had TH-cam for at least 10 or 12 years but I'm grateful that I don't get more ads.

  • @KnitThisOnce
    @KnitThisOnce 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I hit a maximum frustration with ads over 20 seconds at one time. Lately they’ve been 45-60 seconds before I can skip. I ALWAYS back out of any video that has over 20 seconds for an ad break. If I like the content I’ll go back in or click around and go back till I get a shorter ad. If they won’t shorten, I ditch the video.
    Thanks for sharing the info! It opens up the understanding as to how content creators can and can not control the situation. Thanks also for looking for input.
    Keep knitting down there!

    Such a very informative video, thank you for sharing all these details! I really enjoy your podcast and it's such a joy to listen to. English is also not my first language and I appreciate your cool accent 😊 Regarding the question on promotions vs. ads, for me it highly depends on what the TH-camr is promoting, but in general I really dislike it when the person is trying so hard to convince me how great a product is and how we should go and spend our money on it with their promo code (looking at all these Skillshare promos since Skillshare is just a worse version of TH-cam anyway!). I'd rather just have a random ad.

    Very interesting, I had never appreciated how you tube works vis a vis monetary rewards. I have seen a vast increase in ads in some of my favourite podcasts, I don't think the content creator knows that it is happening. I have noticed that if time stamps are put in that ads appear at each break. I think 2 ad breaks is acceptable. I would be interested to hear more about behind the scenes as it is not really mentioned. Thanks for your podcasts they are great.

    Thanks for posting this! As a new "podcaster" I have been curious about this as well and I also started with no intention of making money or becoming a sensation here 😂. I know that a while back, some of the videos (from other channels) were so overloaded with ad breaks (I counted one every ~30 seconds for a 30-minute episode), that I gave up and didn't watch any of them for a week or more. I have a feeling YT was testing some software/algorithm. If I enjoy a channel, expecting at least one ad at the beginning, middle, and end is tolerable. Beyond that I can get annoyed but then that depends on my mood as well!

I watched a particular podcast which only had 2 ad breaks with 2 ads each and the 2nd was skippable. I recommended the episode to a friend as it was a Mkal for a jumper she was thinking of knitting. She complained that there were 4 ad breaks with 3 -4 ads she couldn't skip. I'm wondering why she had so many ads to her 10am viewing and I only had 2 at 4am. Or could it be her preferences might make her more a target for marketing? I cheat a bit, tend to watch an episode via the thumbnail, I just double click to enlarge - no ads at all. The longer an episode I'll watch on another tab so I can pause if I need to. Personally I don't mind the ads on youtube, but Channel 7 has up to 8 ads every few minutes on the only program I watch on that channel.

    I watch a channel that has been growing quickly and she has had a noticeable increase in her self promoting ads. They have started to annoy me. I fear the ad you declined for an exercise bike will be in her next video 😁

    I enjoy your videos and been watching almost from the start. I watch while I’m running on the treadmill so skipping too many adds is inconvenient but 2 or 3 would be fine!
    I am excited to be visiting Australia again in the new year, been 38 yrs. I was an agriculture trainee and spent 7 mths in Queensland. Going to be many changes and many things I have forgotten! Hoping to bring home some Australian yarn. Can you suggest what I should look for?

      Gosh it's so impressive that you watch while running!! go you! How exciting to be coming back to visit sunny QLD. My favourite yarn store in Brisbane is The Little Yarn Store in Taringa but you'll likely find a lot of the yarn is imported from overseas. If you're here long enough to have some yarn delivered from elsewhere in Australia, you could take a look at Bendigo Woollen Mills (made in Victoria), Nundle Woollen Mill or Blackwattle Yarn and Fibre (hand dyed alpaca yarn from a farm near Canberra - bit of a splurge but lovely!)

    Thats so interesting, I have become use to adds, I mute them but let the play. What I dislike is when youtube place adds every few minutes and /or in mid sentence or at a critical moment in the video. I do stop watching if those very disruptive frequent adds remain. The bespoke adds, They can be annoying if they are too long and not fitting to the content and if the youtube adds are still frequent. So, adds don't stop me from watching, I just want to enjoy the content and the person I'm watching, the whole reason for being a viewer.

I EXPECT to have to suffer through a few ads it is all part of the whole channel, AND WATCHING IT THROUGH YOU TUBE….it won’t stop me continuing to watch - I appreciate it takes hours of your time along with special equipment just to share the world of knitting - When I see what you produce - I am in awe - keep going as long as you are enjoying it and it works with your LIFE - good luck! :)

Thanks for the interesting video, and I hope you get some knitting some along with your nesting!

    Very interesting to know how it works. Ads don't bother me much unless there are too many in one video. Sometimes I watch the whole ad if it's something that interests me sometimes I skip. I find ads are usually specifically targeted at me, and what websites I have recently visited, whether or not I have made a purchase. For example, I recently bought tickets for the Shen Yun Ballet, and now see loads of ads for them, which seems a bit pointless when I have already spent my money. I also get lots and lots of ads for Wool Warehouse and Love Crafts. I watch all your podcasts regardless of content - I still watched the bridal knit one and I've been married nearly 46 years. 😊😊It would interest me to know if by me skipping an ad it means that you wouldn't get money for it?

    • @YourKnittingBestie
      @YourKnittingBestie  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ads are almost getting too targeted, aren't they!! Sometimes it seems that my ads know what I want or need before I do 😂 (Although it's not too difficult at the moment - it's all either baby stuff or yarn 😉). How exciting to hear that you're off to the ballet soon, if you haven't already been. I hope you enjoy! I'm so grateful to hear that you watch all of my videos. It's really lovely to know there are some kind eyes and ears in the audience when I record my videos. I'll have to do some research into that last question about skipping - I'm not 100% sure!

    Hi Nadine. I understand the need for ads, but would be annoyed by more than 1 ad break for each 10 minutes of content. Sponsorships are different, and easy to skip past if you have no interest in the product. It was really interesting to hear your thought process, and research. I think you’ll need to at least quadruple your income to get anywhere near breaking even. I can only assume having a channel pushes you to knit more, and your earnings really only equal yarn for 4-5 jumpers. If it were me, I’d be happy if all the effort of running a channel covered the cost of my hobby. I currently knit around 1 garment per month, plus a few accessories like socks and hats. I really love your content and think you have a unique selling point being in a warmer climate and using mainly Australian (or available in Australia) yarns. You also talk about things other knitting channels don’t, so your content is always refreshing. I hope you will continue to share with us for many years to come.

    My tolerance for ads is up to 1 every 5 mins of content. After that I just can’t watch even if it’s interesting. Also, this may be controversial but I actually like affiliate links if the creators are genuine. If they are pitching something I know is not great quality then of course, I would loose respect but I actually love recommendations and I figure none of us are forced to spend our money. So if you get paid, as an affiliate, for something you recommend and I really like it then I see that as a win for both and I’m happy to pay you something for your time and opinion.

    Here is the thing, I get that the ads help the podcasters and all but if you pay TH-cam you don't see ads so how does that work.
    I don't have cable TV since eons because i simply can't with the ads/commercials (I use streaming apps). So same goes for TH-cam. And for those where the podcaster do the ads themselves I have an addon that skips that too. It's not that I don't want to support the podcaster it's just that I rather support in another way rather than with ads.

I understand that if you watch on TH-cam premium (which I believe is the one with no ads), I would still get a financial incentive based on your watch time. I really don’t like the bespoke ads. I fast forward through them, they seem to be long and annoying. The other ads I don’t like either, but they seem shorter. I’ve heard that if you let the ads (not bespoke ones) run through the podcaster gets more money so I try to let them run and I do other things while they’re going so I don’t have to watch the ads- hope that makes sense

    • @YourKnittingBestie
      @YourKnittingBestie  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's so kind of you to watch through ads! I agree with you on the bespoke ads and tend to fast forward through them myself as well. From the limited offers I've had from companies, it seems that some of them will mandate how long you have to talk about the product and specify that it has to be at the start of the video (as viewers tend to drop off rapidly as the video progresses).

      My understanding is that part of their premium fee is allocated to each of the creators they watch :) So if I were 1 of 10 creators a particular premium viewer watched, I would get 10% of the portion of their fee which is paid to creators. I'm sure there's some nuance that I'm not aware of, though.

    I’m ok with youtube adds in very beginning and in the end of video. Sponsorship is also ok. I really really hate adds in middle of videos. In some cases I just stop watching that video and pick another to watch. I’d rather watch four adds in beginning than take add breaks in middle of video. I’m also ok with product rewiev and comparison videos with sponsored products.
    Maybe I hate adds because I live in small country and adds are always same diapers, local banks and local hypermarket adds. So I’m really not target group for those adds. I also get irritated by adds and that irritation doesn’t go away, but I’m irritated for rest of video. I did stop watching and unsubscribed Kaci and Bethany for that reason. I did love their videos before. Now I watdh them maybe once or twice in year.

I love your videos and look forward to more. Ads are annoying no matter when and it depends if I'm just sitting watching or making pottery or doing some other chores as to whether it's annoying that I can't skip. But ads are the way podcasters and youtube operates so we have to tolerate them (and get just a tad impatient, especially since sometimes those ads come at the worst time lolol! I don’t like multiple interruptions during a video but accept that they are there and am happy to ‘suffer’ them for the youtubers I like (you for one 😊) Is it true that you get more income if we allow the advert to run through completely as opposed to skipping as soon as we can? If that is the case I would happily let them run. Just one thing though, please don’t spend all your ‘earnings’ on expensive yarns that are outside the budget for the majority of us. I find that is generally what makes me switch off completely 🫣
