  • Hello everyone,
    This video is going to be for people who never worked with vector images before.
    It is a step-by-step tutorial that focuses on all the basic tools and techniques. However, it can also be viewed as a refresher course. Usually, in the tool options docker, I go through all the buttons. Not this time. I will only show the main ones or the ones that I think beginners will mostly use.
    The image I am going to create toward the end (a beetle bug) is extremely simple. This way, any beginner can reproduce it.
    IMPORTANT NOTICE: Last week’s video triggered some interesting conversations on Krita’s Forum. I was corrected in some areas of the topic and given input and advice. To get the PDF file with the corrections and tips, click here:

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lindley. If you have a white background, go to the tab FILTER, select COLORS and then select COLOR TO ALPHA. Click OK. However, depending on the background you have, you may have to select your entire subject using the magic wand or the lasso tool, then, go to the SELECT tab, and select INVERT SELECTION. Then, click on your DEL button. This would get rid of your background.
      The only thing to keep in mind here, is that there are no simple ways (as far as I know) of doing this, when you have a complicated background. The COLOR TO ALPHA only works when you have a plain background. I hope this helps a little.

    Great video! Question: If you want to fill more than one shape with the same color, can you hold "shift" and click on each layer? And then fill one shape with the color, which would fill all shapes highlighted? Or even simpler, "group" all the shapes that you want one color, click the group and fill. Would this work?

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I do not claim to be a super expert in Krita, but this is what I have experienced in my time using it. Grouping vector layers, then, clicking on the group layer and using the select shape tool to select all areas you want to color, won't work. What I usually do, and this is just a suggestion, is the following: I group all my vectors layers together. I lock the group and call is ARCHIVE. You should always have archives of your hard work put aside and locked. This way, you can always get back to it if needed. Then, I make a copy of the group and merge all the layers together. Do not do CTRL + E on the group layer itself. It will merge all the layers within the group as paint layers. Open the group first, and then, merge the layers within the group. Rename your newly merged layer. Then, using the select shape tool, select a cluster of shapes and fill them with the color you want. You can hold the shift key to select one shape at a time, if the shapes are really apart from each other on your drawing. I hope this helped.

      Hello Rina. Are you trying to import/export a group., or a single layer? Make sure that you are trying to import/export a single Vector layer. Also, if you merged all your vector layers, make sure that you didn't, by accident, merged them as a paint layer. Let me know. Thanks.

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. You must merge vector layers one at a time. You cannot merge several layers together, or merge within a group. It will convert them into paint layers. So, do a Ctrl + Z to undo all the merging you have done, and then, merge one layer at a time. Then, when you are left with one vector layer, you can export it. Also, please read the other responses I have written in the comments, regarding this matter. Good luck.

      Hello and Happy New Year to you. Did you try to merge vectors layers within a group? If you hit Ctrl + E on a group layer, it will transform everything withing that group into one merged raster layer. Which is crazy to me. You need to open your group, and within the group, you merge one layer at a time. When you have one layer left in the group, move it out of the group using the up arrow. Now, you can remove the group and you are left with one merged vector layer. Let me know if this is what was happening. Thanks.

      Hello. Check the layer you are trying to save. Maybe, by accident, you are on a paint layer, and not a vector layer. If you have merged all layers at once, this will create a paint layer. You must merge layers one at a time. Not all together. I know... It's weird. But, unfortunately, Krita hasn't fixed that problem. Let me know... I'm online today. I'll wait for your reply. • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Layon. Make sure that the layer you are trying to save is a vector layer. As you may already know, you can use vector tools to draw on a paint layer. However, you CANNOT correct or edit the shapes you created when on a paint layer. To be able to edit and modify your shapes, you must have your vector shapes on a vector layer. If you happened to have drawn your shapes on a paint layer by accident, you will see the Save as SVG greyed out. I wished you could just copy and paste your work from a paint layer to a vector layer, but you cannot do so. You will have to redraw everything on a vector layer.

    Do you have any videos for like beginners. You start out this video with already being several buttons pushed in which someone who is beginner has no idea how to get there. Did you press new file did you press animation comic template...what.🤔 do you have a video where you start from the moment you open up the krita software and everything from beginning to end. Or know where I can find one. I would love to learn.

      Scroll down the page and you will see the PDF.

    Hi, can you export a vector png file on with this software?

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Matt. Great question. Krita is only allowing us to export vectors layers as SVG. Krita does not have a quick export function like photoshop does. If I recall correctly, you can do a quick export in photoshop and choose to export your image as PNG from the menu. Maybe, one day, Krita will offer that function. I haven't looked at Krita 5.0 yet, though... I hope I am not telling you something wrong. Have a great day and thank you again for this great question. It will help other users. Cheers.

      Hello Daniela. You can save your vector layer by going to LAYER. Choose IMPORT/EXPORT and then, choose SAVE VECTOR LAYER AS SVG.

      Hello King King. What version of Krita are you using? Also, you can only save one layer. So, merge all the layers into one vector layer within the group and then, save (export) that single layer into an SVG as shown in the video. Please let me know if this helped or not. Thanks.

    • @BladeQuillartacademy

      This happens! You have to merge the vector layers one at a time, not as a group... for some reasons, if you do, it merges them as a paint layer. I'm glad that your figured this out. Thanks for reaching out. I hope you don't encounter any more problems. Best of luck!

    Problem, the merged vector layers turn into a rastered layer, why is that? Heeelp

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you merge the vector layers all at once as a group, or merge them all at once by selecting all the layers? If yes, this is your answer. You need to merge vector layers one a time... You start with the top layer and merge it with the one below, then merge that one with the one below, etc.. When you are done, you end up with only one Merged vector layer. I hope this helps. Let me know and thank you for your previous comment. I am so happy this little first video of my vectors series is helping so many people. Have a great day and good luck.

    Can't turn the group into a vector layer, with CTRL+E

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Rusty. It is correct. In Krita, you have to merge each vector layer (within a group) at a time. Then, when you are left with one vector layer only, you can move it above the group layer using the up arrow. When done, you can now remove the group layer. It is one of many things that Krita's team should work on... maybe it's already in their long list of things to correct, improve and change... Who knows? Thanks for your great question.

    hi, did they remove the svg function?

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can not save an entire document as an SVG directly, using the "Save AS" function. You need first to merge all your layers into one. Then, you need to go to the "LAYER" tab, select "import export", and then choose "save vector at SVG". I have only used Krita for a few years. if the function was there before, and they removed it, I wouldn't know. This is a good question to ask their forum. Here is the link if you don't have it already. Sorry I couldn't be much of help. LINK TO FORUM: krita-artists.org/

    • @BladeQuillartacademy
      @BladeQuillartacademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Michael. unfortunately, you CANNOT merge vector layers in a group by merging the group itself. You need to open the group and merge the layers within the group one at a time. Meaning, merge the top one with the one below. Repeat, until you have only one layer left. Now, you are left with one vector layer inside the group. Move the layer outside the group, and delete the group. Done.

      Hello. As far as I know, I have not seen or heard of vector brushes. because Krita is primarily a raster graphics editing tool,, it only has the tools I showed in the tutorial for making shapes.
      Unfortunately, we cannot use the symmetry feature (called Mirror tool in Krita) when you are on a Vector layer. It only works when you are on a paint layer. I hope I answered your questions.
