Intense movie, haven't seen it in years but the older brother realizes his mistakes and doesn't want his younger brother following his path. The teacher said they were both really smart but with his past the older brother probably has a hard time getting even a decent job. Life's to short to waste a single day on hatred . But yeah, other than him shaving his head he looked exactly the same. I mean fucking great movie overall anyway but I just never understood the three years sentence. Oh come on... you're not going to even mention the reason for the grocery store scene?
That established the whole moral query of the movie!
They rampaged the store because the Korean shop owner was hiring illegal immigrants! I'm not saying that's justified, but when you leave that detail out, you might as well just say, "The skinheads are meanies. They do mean things."
The whole query of the movie is "When does justified anger turn into extremism?"
Every single thing Danny did through the entire movie had a fairly righteous worldview at the center of it... but the problem isn't necessarily the idology itself... but the transition to extremism. THAT SCENE ESTABLISHES THIS!
How can you mention this scene and just say, "He's a Nazi and he said Politically Nazi stuff... yada yada, beating up and terrorizing Blacks and Mexicans?"
Ugh... I don't know if I'm even going to watch the rest of this. You already buried the skinheads' entire character and motive under the word Nazi... which is SPECIFICALLY what this movie DOESN'T DO!

    The gay scene 💀

  • @runthenumbers9698
    @runthenumbers9698 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I sometimes watch this movie just out of astonishment that the movie was ever made. Like... how?
Like... You could depict White evil in that way today. Matter of fact, if you did, you'd get a high five. So that isn't even edgy. White evil has been portrayed in movies and television forever now. That aspect wasn't new.
The thing that astonishes me is just how much they let BLACK evil be discussed in that movie. There was the Black guy who killed Derek's Dad. The Black guys breaking into his truck. The young Black guys beating up and intimidating the White kid in the bathroom. The same one who eventually kills Danny.
And the movie never once tried to redeem any of those Black characters.
I mean... there was a little wokeness in the movie. Let's face it... American History X has not one, but TWO Black savior characters (the Principal, and the prison dindu) but they even let Derek spit facts about Rodney King! THIS MOVIE WAS RELEASED ONLY 7 YEARS AFTER RODNEY KING!
That would be like a movie 4.5 years from now showing someone saying that George Floyd overdosed on fentanyl and Derek Chauvin is a completely innocent man... and WINNING THE ARGUMENT!
I was a kid in the 90's and at the time, I didn't understand just how edgy that was.

One-sided view? He recapped a movie nothing more, he provided no opinion or sociological/moral views on it, just a simple recap. If we wanted to discuss the messages in the movie we would have to talk about
      1) Racism is a destructive force that harms both individuals and society as a whole.
      2) Hate and intolerance can lead to violence and harm, and it is important to confront and reject these attitudes.
      3) Redemption and forgiveness are possible, but they require acknowledging and taking responsibility for past actions.
These are the problems that America and most of the world struggle with, we spend too much time hating everything unfamiliar to us and not enough time embracing our similarities
