  • Join Ciro De Siena as he walks us through this new SUV from a brand new badge on South African roads...well, it's more of a comeback story!
Many South Africa's may remember the Proton name and badge from our roads, before the brand pulled out of South Africa in 2012.
While those cars left much to be desired, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Proton has grown and matured considerably in the decade since their disappearance.
With an initial lineup comprised of two SUVs, namely the X50 reviewed here and the larger X70, local importers, the large CMH group, are confident that these new products have what it takes to compete in what has become a fiercely competitive market, made even more so by strong offerings from Chinese brands Chery and Haval.
While it is difficult not to compare the new Proton to offerings from the aforementioned Chinese brands, the X50 is more closely priced with more established rivals such as Kia and Hyundai.
However, will South Africans be convinced that there is significant value on offer from Proton to stump up the extra cash? We'll let Ciro try and answer that question for you.

Bought a top spec X50 here in Mauritius. Only compared it to the Kia Seltos. It was a no brainer. Excellent quality. Great engine. Superb ride quality and a lot more. Way more spec than the Seltos for the same money. Things are different in SA, but I would still stick to the X50.

here in Malaysia, proton cars are always pretty cheapest and most of us bought them because it's so much cheaper than their rivals Honda, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes and yet always punch above their weight in terms of performance. also, in Malaysia the road tax is based on the car C.C, Malaysians mainly choose their car on petrol usage and the CC, hence why no proton got exceeds 2000cc

I believe the x50 had to be thoroughly re-engineered as a RHD vehicle and not simply just flipping the steering position. This is why you may feel that the fittings have a more quality feel to it. Also, the suspensions have been tuned by Proton engineers who used to work together with Lotus while Proton was still the owner. While I wouldn't say that the engine is a Volvo one, Volvo did participate in the development of this engine. My mom drives the x50 and I've driven the car quite a fair bit (had it for 1.5 years now) and the engine certainly doesn't lack power. It certainly feels more powerful than the 1.8 corolla cross that my sister owns.

After owning a GWM P LT series for over one year I do not recommend any product from Haval. The vehicle is ok. Nice specs and great looks however the downfall is after sale service and lack of honoring warranty claims. I believe the issue is a lack of an established product backup. From my understanding the Proton is backed by Volvo and parts and services by Ford and that is a massive difference. The quality is also far superior to a jolion and H6. I've driven all including the Proton 50.

yeah, the pricing is an issue, over here at Malaysia, the top spec model is priced at 113k MYR or 424,545.98 South African Rand, so its less of an issue for us.
As foreign cars are expensive here due to tax, this is pretty much a go to car if you are looking for premium features at that price range for the segment of cars. Of course there are also plenty of cheaper options from local rival Perodua, that are much popular for everyday family use

    • @3mKay

@@asurakishin8105 I disagree, unless you are driving highways all the time, most people that bought perodua are urban drivers that prioritize fuel efficiency and reliability, which perodua is superb at. At lower speeds and frequent traffics, handling is less of an issue and newer perodua has improved handling especially DNGA platform cars. Perodua simply targeted an audience with what matters most to Malaysian car users. All new perodua cars have ADAS that surpassed those in similar price range. At 2022, ADAS is almost a must for modern road users especially urban drivers

We’re waiting for Proton S50 in Malaysia. Predicted to launch sometime next year.
If Proton to sell the Persona in SA, I’m pretty sure it’ll be a lot cheaper than many of its competitors. It’s the cheapest segment C sedan in Malaysia, cheaper than a segment C hatchback from Perodua. Perodua is another Malaysian brand and its whole existence is aim to sell affordable cars.

From what Proton was back in the day to what it looks like now is a huge improvement especially with the Volvo engine. Unfortunately money talks in this country and the pricing of this Proton when comparing to the other Chinese brands with what they offer at top of the range is really a big sell to pay more for less spec than you would have compared to a Haval or Chery for less of the money with more spec. Proton in my option should have returned humbled price wise first and get consumers in its corner before throwing out big numbers. Close to 600k for a 3 cylinder 4 pipe Proton! Did they charge more for those pipes also in the price?

    • @malprojectsenawang

    • @m.salleh5919

Proton is not considered a cheap brand in 🇲🇾 mate. It moved up the stakes leaving Perodua@ Daihatsu clone (another 🇲🇾 car brand) to sell their cars at the basement segment. Certainly Proton would be miffed if lumped in the same basket as a Haval or Cherry 😁!

Due to the high tax on foreign carmakers in Malaysia, Proton is fairly affordable. Especially since its direct competitors are usually Japanese and Korean. Proton is never compared to the Chinese brands here.

It's nice, much nicer than a Jolion in my opinion, but for the money I'd take a Subaru XV 2.0i-S ES and you get symmetrical all-wheel drive thrown in along with proven reliability and a brand that's been in South Africa for 30 years. Compared to the X50 Premium, you'd still have almost R49,000 left over for fuel.
