Fortnite being able to integrate so much pop culture into the game really helps. Not to mention the frequent updates, live events, new maps, the story behind it. They made something special like it or not

You can tell they have a sizable older audience because of the money they drop on old iconic skins.

Also another BIG REASON why Fortnite SHOULD NOT DIE bcs FORTNITE IS ONE OF THE BIG REASONS WHY Unreal Engine Devs get the juice so they can continue to work on it.On top of that Fortnite is USED by Epic and especialy UE devs to TEST the new additions, patches that came/come to UE.
So Fortnite has MULTIUSAGE from FUNDING the Engine develpoment to being a TESTING GROUND for every UE feature/tool addition.

@@freedomextremist7215 this take may have been relevant years ago but not today.
These days the fortnite Battlepass is SIGNIFICANTLY better then the competitions, its like night and day.
Overwatch specifically is a terrible example because they replaced the arguably better loot boxes with SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive and anticonsumer store skins.
The one up that Fortnite has is the Battlepass is A LOT easier to level and obtain. (Being able to level it in Save the World makes it ridiculously fast, I got to level 100 in under a month this season)

No build Mode and their season-to-season updates are why the game is still doing so well. 100% no doubt in my mind. Building made it less accessible to a large percentage of players because the skill curve was too high.

Just thought I'd add that Epic games was back of forth between the PUBG team developing the open world streaming part of the engine which made PUBG possible and the amount of work they did on that probably prompted them to want to reap some the rewards of doing most the leg work from a game which seem to heavily rely on that.
They also probably wanted to jump on an new idea which was already deemed successful as well since they'd just failed not one but 2 titles simultaneously, Fortnite's original Survival Game and the Paragon MOBO. It was also apparent to them Unreal Tournament would never be wide appeal so maybe even consider it 3 games dying

No build completely saved the game from death for the casual players. Keeping the casual players base that they had and bring back other players that like myself can't build fort knox in 5 seconds to survive your first fight lol. By far the best update to the game. The only thing that would make this game even better is by making some of the LTMs like one shot and high explosives and so on permanent game modes to play other than the normal battle royal or creative maps.

Take a look at TF2. There is a competitive scene, but it's a minority of the playerbase that watches or participates it. TF2 throws some custom badges their way and organizes tournaments, but they knew they inject TF2 with the same competitive elements CS:GO or Dota2 had. They hold 100k+ regular players without focus on high-level play. Just make a fun game that keeps people coming back.

Biggest reason? They actually focus on fun imo. Quick in and out, wacky non hardcore gameplay, frequent meta changes, etc. Ever since no build it has been a really solid game. I just don't like how they treated save the world. Hot take: they also have the best value battle pass in the industry rn. It will never be a main game for me, but I'm enjoying jumping in for 30 mins at a time for some chaos that I won't be mad at if I lose or anything. Epic/tencent are debatable evil but damn it, those evil geniuses cracked the code of casual fun in a br style game.
