- The tour of Idaho is a dirt bike event that consists of an unsupported, unassisted, 13 day, 2300 mile ride from Idaho's southern border with Utah to the northern border with Canada. Ride along and see what it's like to take on this challenge
Day one consists of 232 miles and took 17.5 hours to complete. I started in Milad City and ended in Pocatello Idaho.

Very impressive!!! For anyone that’s never rode robbers roost it’s no joke. You started up it after 190 miles and 16 hrs I think of riding very impressive. And you video doesn’t do it just its step rocky rooty and loose. I live in Pocatello I ride it regularly and every year it gets worse. Nice job man.

More than any other TOI video, this communicates the sheer enduring slog that the TOI, and especially day 1, is. It is a sobering reality check and an indication of just how much more physical fitness training I need to do before next year! Great video. Thanks for the great music too!

This has to be one of the best motorcycle endurance videos I’ve seen. I was in awe the entire video. I felt every kind of emotion watching this video. Excitement, nerves, and jealousy. Ha, I’m so damn jealous 😂

I live in Oregon at the moment, till I can move back to Boise, three years from now after I retire. This is a bucket list, but I’ll be 57 when I can retire, so I’ll have to wait till then. I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete the course, but that won’t stop me from trying 😁

I’m 58 after 40 years I bought a ktm excf 500 and my trail endurance is an hour severe fatigue over gripping struggling to stay on the seat. This video is a master piece of art great job I also have a channel. You are incredible and an inspiration to me. 😊 thank you for posting

Great job with your video edit. Your descriptions really add a lot. I have done some of the "easier" sections of the TOI, and found them much more difficult than expected. Anyone that even attempts the TOI deserves great praise!

although I've never rode TOI nor would i try... i have climbed a mountain over 8000 meters, didn't climb Everest because i can not afford $80,000, but for those $80,000, sherpas carry your backpack, set up your tent, cook your food and you hike up using fixed ropes someone had set up for you using oxygen tank...don't be fooled by Everest being the tallest mountain, I've climbed 4000 meter mountains in Canada which were 8 times more technical than Everest....there is a reason blind people, teenagers and 80 year-olds reached top of Everest.....i doubt there are people in climbing community who would be impressed with Everest! now if someone said K2 ya that would be better comparison

This video was excellent in every measure. I'm exhausted... in a good way. And I loved the music selection. It contributed to the hypnotic quality of the POV footage; good pacing, tempo, and mood. I've enjoyed this so much that I am now a new subscriber and will watch the next in the series. Maybe not tonight. I need to catch my breath from watching this one. Very inspiring.

Great report Brian. Myself and 2-3 others completed it in August of 2023. We did not run Go-Pro's or create a thread anywhere. We really enjoyed watching your videos among others in preparation for the Tour. Like you, we had a few mechanical issues that we sorted out along the way. I commend you for tackling it solo. Would ride it all over again!

Once for speed and once as part of a longer ride.
The post up of your adventure totally inspired me to pull out all my crap and revisit it.

A T1 or T2 ? T1 is under the rules and tracked etc.. T2 is run at your leisure, not part of the event.
T1, once in 2013 and once in 2014.
It was kinda different back then.
Not sure how long you have been following the T1, but it has changed.
I enjoyed the ride with you. You may have gambled a little riding unknown trails solo in the dark but it was prolly a good call to start at midnight. You finished during daylight when you were the most tired.

Great Videos. Good on you to come from the East Coast and take this Challenge on especially Solo in an unfamiliar environment. I think this is the last official year of the Tour so you have this summer.

That back side of Chinese peak is a SOB! Done it on a smaller bike and dang near wore myself out! Was supposed to do it on the T4 on my loaded down Tenere 700, but opted out. Great video!
I couldn't do that race, with wilderness that epic i would turn it into a camping trip and take my time. 😁

Thank you, riding that kind of terrain in the dark is an experience for sure. You need to strong relationship with the person you attempt this with. but it is safer to do it that way, but the accomplishment of doing it solo is very rewarding.
Thanks for your videos. Just getting started watching but like what I see so far, especially what you did to and carried on your bike. I’m just getting back into dirt riding and there’s lots of gear out there that didn’t exist when I was younger. I’d like to see something on the riding gear you used, protective and otherwise. Thank you.. good idea, I will cover the clothing/gear I used in the next videos. Everyone has preferences. My experience with off-road riding gear, the term you get what you pay for, really does apply in this area..

Fantastic video, Brian. I totally binged watched your TOI and was so amped during them. I have sent your video's to a couple of friends, hopefully they get as excited as I did and we can get a few of those sections done this year. Question for your .. Were the GPS's you had the Garmin 700i's?
Thank you ! glad you enjoyed them.. awesome to hear. hope you are able to gt out and enjoy the adventure. I used the Garmin 700 base units. not the "I" version. I carried an Inreach Mini in my vest.
The first few sections of TOI are in my backyard. I've been on a bunch of it a bunch of times. I have not yet put the entire route together, perhaps it is time...200+ miles of familiar gravel roads and two tracks is no big deal for a day ride. 200+ miles of unfamiliar single track is a loooong day.

There have been many changes since the introduction of the T1 challenge days.
It's great to see the new and also catch passing views of the original routes.
You said gearing was stock...what teeth would that be on your bike?
I used 13 50 on a 450exc.
1st gear was short but it would tractor on the steep stuff.

I was mistaken, i actually had 14/52 sprockets on the bike. stock is a 13. ill need to consider my options. enjoy the rest of the show.
I need to put a banjo bolt and different rear light on my husky 350fx, so I can hit the streets and dirt. I have a Baja designs headlight but no low beam, so if I pass by you guys at night in the future sorry if I blind you. Looked fun and good music.

I think we have some IDBDRs that you can do in a day or two. But the Tour is a different monster entirely

This is a great video! I love it. I want to know, how you slept? @43:13 -ish you started your explanation of your bike setup but you didn't explain how you sleep? You didn't say you had a sleeping bag or tent. Are you NOT sleeping on the trail for 13 days? Do you end a segment, and ride into the nearest town to stay in a hotel? I didn't know this enduro race existed so I will find the website to find out more. I wish you would have gone over that in this video.
Hey good point, i guess i didn't go over that very well. The route is designed so you end up in small towns along the way each night, where you can find a small motel, inn or airB&B to stay at. All of this is pre-planned, and you make your reservations months in advance to ensure you have a place. most of use booked our rooms around April each year. There are definitive segments of the tour broken into days, starting and ending where you can find lodging. If everything goes to plan, you leave early in the morning and hopefully arrive at the next town before dark. But on this adventure, nothing ever goes exactly as planned. The only thing i carried was a change of dry clothes and a emergency bivy. If needed i would have been able to survive a night in the woods, but it would not have been very comfortable.

I used a 4.5 Gallon IMS tank, with a new fuel pump and filters. Also installed the alloy connectors and metal splice with upgraded filter. Extra fuel went in a 2 gallon, Giant Loop gas bag.

Great job on the videos! What brand of lights were you using? What tires? How were you planning on getting back to your truck?
Thanks, The lights are Diode Dynamics SSC1 Pro's, high lumens, low amp draw, great color output, Rugged, and easy to swap out lenses. I ran Goldentyre GT333 on the rear and GT216 Fatty on the front. very happy with both traction wise. the rear did burn up quick. It was the tire most used by everyone on the tour, so the shops along the way made sure they had them in stock. A friend of mine was out running the BDR route at the same time. the plan was for him to loop back and pickup the truck and retrieve me at the finish. After i retired on day 6, i slabbed it the 320 miles back to the truck.

The two GPS devices are Garmin Montana 700's. They are on powered mounts from Garmin using RAM mount hardware to the bike. for base mapping, i used Caltopo.com software to create custom basemap information, including topo, roads/trails and MVUM information. this is then loaded through a memory card on the GPS.

A 690 is to big and heavy. 500 & 350 cc enduro bikes are perfect for this kind of trip.
I’m also curious as to what gps you’re using. I’m starting to set up a gas gas 500 for adventure riding
They are the Garmin Montana 700 with a powered mount. I have been really happy with them. I think that the Garmin Tread is a new offering that looks very promising for adventure bikes.

I can’t find a gps track for the t1 anywhere and I’m planning on trying it next year
There are no tracks. The the Tour of Idaho is navigated by waypoints. The waypoints are available to download for free from the website. You wont find many tracks of the whole route, and people who have run it probably wont give them up as navigating via the waypoints is an important part of the adventure.
what battery do you use?
Can you just ride the trail and do it on your own without signing up with whoever? I think it would be amazing to do this but idk about being forced to do it in certain times or dates and take pictures or I’m not allowed to move on to the next section. I can’t imagine the land is privately owned
The "event" or T1 as defined in this video is no longer run . But the route is still posted and available for anyone. you can download the waypoints and follow the route at your leisure. this is often referred to as a T2 . Anyone can use the route and the trails are public.

Sure, the light manufacturer sells a "go-pro" mount adaptor. I used that to go to a 1" ram ball with a gopro end on it. I used 1" RAM mount hardware. I purchased no-name handlebar clamps from Amazon that mount to the bars. they are alloy. then the shortest RAM arm available. then the adaptor to go from the 1" ram ball to the light housing. You could do this with all RAM brand hardware, but the handlebar mount RAM offers is bulky and takes up too much real-estate.

Did you use the Sport or the Pro version of the Diode Dynamics Stage One C1 LED lights?
I got the Sport version and it’ll work, but wondering if you were happy with those or the much higher output Pro version. (In other words, I’m wondering if I bought the wrong ones? 😂)
I went with the Pro version. I did not try the Sport option. depending on what you are using them for, and the lenses you are using, you may be fine.. at this point give em a shot and see how they work.
@@briangoss super grateful for your help again. I’ll try them out and can easily (but costly) change them out for the Pro versions. I suppose my riding mower could use lights, so the Sport lights would have a new purpose 😜

Correct.. Redundancy, and its nice to have one zoomed in close and one a much larger overview. I could also set up one for viewing data relevant to the special navigation sections, and the other GPS in map view. Overall it worked out best from a redundancy perspective.
I'd rather do a couple hours with some really technical singletrack reduce some killer ass hill climbs for like 2 hours
