    When I really got into shooting handguns and got into shooting competition and long range it forced me to get into handloading because I couldn't get what I wanted out of factory ammo unless I spent a fortune. Now I have 3 Dillion progressive presses, a turret press, and a couple single stage presses all setup along with the everything I need to walk into my reloading room and can start cranking out whatever ammo I want. It's not as cheap to get into it today as it was when I started and even then I went into it with the buy once cry once mentality and just started adding to it over the year but it's still a really good option if you want the best ammo you get because you can fine tune a load for your guns and that's something you can't do with factory ammo. Really cool rifle setup and great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

      @Jeff The heart of the SPR is the barrel. They chose 18” stainless for a reason, so lightweight barrels aren’t really part of the mix (although have other values). I use Douglas from Compass Lake 1/7 with Wylde chamber and love it. Many modern builders use a Geissele SSA trigger but I find them creepy and non crisp, and currently use AR Gold which is excellent. Glass should be the best you can afford, but is expensive as you know. The original glass was in the 3-10 range. I currently use a Leupold but will eventually move up to something better.

    • @jimmybrodriguez
      @jimmybrodriguez  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but it’s a balance because you also have to balance reliability. So gas length and port size are important when deciding which to get. I would personally prioritize reliability and accuracy over “smoothness.” Not every company has put in the time to figure out the proper port sizes.

    • @alexanderb5644
      @alexanderb5644 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmybrodriguez so your response's been bouncing around my head past few days as I figure out what barrel I want to burn my BF savings on... A relationship that started to appear, since I don't see the port size listed, is the relative distance from gas port to end of barrel. Seems like barrels reported as highly reliable have gas blocks near to end of barrel while "smooth shooters" appear further from end. For example, the BA Hanson profile places the gas block basically mid-way on the barrel. Ignoring alloy composition for now, with this heuristic for max reliability on a rifle length gas I'd want to go 18" and just hoping the gas port size is good, see any problems with that thinking?

If you want to shoot beyond 300m you’re probably not the guy with a BDC. And if you are, you’re probably either shooting a dedicated CQB setup, or something that’s a little more budget friendly. Because they have become a hype company. All it is, is a milspec ar15 with a good barrel. Nothing else about them is awesome, just normal uppers, lowers, and handguards. The only way to get a good value and top notch parts is to build your own with the best of each manufacturer. My spr build I just completed is a fine example. Vltor MUR upper, centurion 16” mk12 barrel, DD ris iii handguard, Geissele super tricon trigger, brt chrome bolt carrier, FN contract overun bolt, springco white hot buffer spring, h1 buffer, LMT buffer tube kit, cmmg lower. Only reason I used a cmmg lower was because that was all I could find locally, but it has way better fit and finish than any aero I’ve used. You’d think upper and lower were a matched set.

    It really sounds like this class needs to be split up into to 2 classes. 1 class to go over basics of gear, ammo, and fundamentals like getting zeroed and gathering DOPE. Then another class to go over actual DMR stuff. It sounds like people were all over the place in gear, skills, and knowledge. I just went through this with a buddy of mine who wants to shoot a PRS match, but he wants to shoot it with his 16-inch AR, a Vortex 1-6x PST, and 55gr ball ammo. I basically told him it was going to be a rough day where he'd be hitting maybe 20-30% of the target package and struggling all day. Shooting past 300 yards with an AR requires a bit of prerequisite that a lot of guys gloss over. My SPR has an 18” Proof barrel, Primary Arms PLX 1-8x, and I run 77gr hand loads with Shooter’s World Precision powder. I’ve walked it out to 700 yards on 2MOA size targets fairly easily.

    Getting the job done at distance means using the proper bullet at the proper velocity for expansion. As much as I love my 12.5 any shot at that distance will not result in terminal performance. I still do not want to be shot by a bullet that doesn't expand, but...picking the right tool for the job is key. However, "passing" a class is generally most peoples idea of effective no matter the ballistic truth.

    Runs tall mount, realizes not great for use case of rifle. Adds cheek riser, defeats reason behind tall mount. Builds dedicated rifle for use case, uses tall mount again. 🤣 if you end up not digging the Harris and want to stick with atlas the cal does away with the pan feature.

      "The Badger Ordnance Low Profile Bipod Kit comes with a specially modified Harris BRM-S 6"-9" bipod along with a LPHM MLOK mount. The leg extension buttons have been moved to the inside where they can't be accidentally hit when using the bipod as a barricade block." You can find details on Badger's website, I also think on Ridgeline's TH-cam page he has a quick SPR set-up vid from a couple years ago that could help you.
