I'm really liking all this long range stuff. It gives me hope that we're moving past the phase of super short rifles and up close pew pew coolness. We're bringing back the American marksman.
Best content in regards to distance shooting with a gas gun. Keep it coming please
as a Ret Marine 0369 ( 94-2014)- PltSGt etc during GWOT.. I can tell you, my DMRs, in my Platoon, were huge positive game changers on the battlefield. the fear and security they could bring to the TIC was awesome. I am currently building one myself. My young Marines in my old platoons, loved being picked for the duty amd extra training before the deployments..and putting the skills to test during the deployments.. again, huge game changers for us. overwatch and cord on etc.. u just brought back a few good memories..wow.. Semper Fi.. Awesome video filled with history and knowledge. love it!
PSA has mk 12 mod S for around 1499, highly recommend
I was under the impression for the longest time that all you need is one 5.56 gun, one barrel length is the most effective to do everything you need to do and if it can't fill a mission statement you need to go to a AR10 or a boltgun. While in some cases that is true, 5.56 is very capable at distance and building an "SPR" you are adding capability to a round that you already have a lot of experience with. I think this movement of guys broadening there skill sets is the best thing for the community.
The greatest reason that people try to stretch the capabilities of 5.56 to be a shorty rifle or a long range rifle is ammo availability, whether it be in the civilian sense of being able to pay .30-.50 cents a round, or at the squad level in the military where you can take an spr out into the field and shoot for longer, with higher capacity mags and share ammo with your other riflemen.
I took a Ridgeline NVG class and Jay taught it! Great dude and probably the fastest walker I’ve seen lol! He smoked everyone walking back and forth to targets
Thanks Jim. Jay is a great teacher, he ran the Scoped Carbine course I took in April of this year. And Ridgeline is great too, awesome facility.
Jay and the whole crew are solid and that facility is one of the best in the country that civilians can access
SPR is a military contract specification. Build what fits YOUR requirements. The military SPR is by no means the best solution, it is however a super cool piece of history.
With everyone getting so hyped on SPR/scoped carbine builds, I think quality 3-9x40 optics are being criminally overlooked. People are jumping straight into modern 2-12/2.5-10 MPVOs that have all the modern features, but they’re taking a massive weight penalty with an optics package that’s about 2 to 2&1/2lbs with mount and mini red dot. With 3-9x optics, you can typically get a scope with amazing glass, adjustable turrets, generous eye relief, and super lightweight for under $500. There are plenty of used options on the market and a few new models like Leupold’s MK3 HD, VX-Freedom, or Trijicon Accupoints. They are so much more than a hunting scope.
Absolutely with you. I've been running a swarovski z3 3.4-10. It weighs 12 oz. Easy hits out to 700 with the reticle that has mil and wind holds. It's lacking a good exposed turret though.
We had a gang make the trip up to take the recce carbine class. First day we shot for around 4 hours mostly prone in ice and slush. The 2nd day was a wind chill of 13 with steady wind all day. I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat. Jay and Rudy were awesome. If youre reading this or on the fence about going to see these dudes for a class, this is your sign.
Also ask about buying a black hoodie
😂😂😂
Love videos like this! Well done 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
More stuff coming
In the Marine Corps circa 2005-6 we fielded the Mk12 as the SAM-R. We had two per platoon, and they had 3-9 Leupolds. Harris Bipods, KAC RAS free float handguards and later the Ops Inc can.
Can’t wait for the trend where people purchase and train with equipment that fits their use case not what Instagram says is cool.
Took their Combative Carbine class with Alex back in 2020, can't wait to return for Recce Carbine in November. Heard the facility has changed massively since then.
SPR and CQB are my main AR interests. Thanks JGL.
I keep coming back to this question! Lately my feed has been SPR vs GPR/Recce like crazy lol
Well Recce isn't a rifle, but I think people over complicate it. It's all dependent on context and goals. You can still get a lot done with a red dot and magnifier
People like to divide shit up into easily digestible and boxes. All of them assume a basic AR style platform.
16" barrel, low power fixed or lpvo, lite = Recce/GPR.
18"-20" barrel, high power optic, still 5.56 = SPR
18"-20" barrel, high power optic, larger than 5.56-308 = DMR
Personally, I think they're just buzz words to get people to spend more money. There's always going to be something that does a particular job better than the setup you've currently got. Do you need it though?
More SPR content please
Lots more coming along with some other new stuff
Ahhh, cant wait for this content from ridgeline to keep coming out. Hoping to get into 2024 SPR full spectrum, hopefully they run more than one full week next year.
Full Spectrum is mint. They should have spicy calendar next year
I LOVE my Mk12 Mod 1 and AEM5 so much I’m getting a 14.5” centurion arms mk12 barrel made for my ACR
IN 2000 WE HAD THE M14 DMR 7.62, LEUPOLD MK4 M3 10X.
You are absolutely correct and we fucking loved it.
IN ‘43 WE HAD THE M1903-A3 .30-06, WEAVER 2.5X.
IT WAS JUST AS GOOD
I didn’t know they gave lightwheel mechanics that stuff
@@davidhenderson1738it was meh. That optic doesn’t have stops and uses a cam style to change elevation. You can try and keep dialing and over travel the turret so you’d actually loose elevation 😊
LOUD NOISES
Funny this lines up with hops last post well.
My SPR has the OPS12 barrel design. Ordered the Otter Creek OCM5 last week. Let the 6-9 month wait begin!!!
I've had the OCM5 for a little over a year, about 5K through it. The thing is just awesome. A little heavy, but you'd think you were shooting a .22 with the way it sounds and recoil. Worth the purchase, you wont be dissapointed.
Good to hear. I’m fine w the extra weight. The AR is set up for bench test shooting vs “run & gun.” I already own 2 other suppressors but I’m most excited about this 1. I still need to order the collar & break!!!
What brand AR are you putting it on?
@@jck197it’s all Ballistic Advantage ….. barrel, upper, lower, hand-guard and BCG. Running a rifle length Magpul MOE rear. Superlative Arms Adj gas block.
Hello from Brazil! What are your thoughts about a 4-16 scopes for DMR? I have a Vortex HS 4-16x44 already here... its a hunting scope, but thinking about use it in my 14.5, plus a bipod, SSAE trigger and my SPR is done!
i still love my fixed 10 power swfa, no bs and simple to use. 556 also goes way farther then 600 yards
💪💪💪💪keep dropping these 🔥🔥🔥 videos 📷📷📷
I need to get caught up on putting the rest out.
@@jimmybrodriguez I'm waiting on it so I can use some of it in my videos 🎯🎯🎯🪖🪖🪖
Recommendation for Ridgeline: before going into details about the equipment that defined the SPR, it would be good to start with the CONOPS and use cases for the SPR and the derived requirements that resulted in the SPR coming to be.
🇺🇸
Where can we see more of that lovely Mod 1?
What is the back up mini red dot zeroed at on such rifles
It feels like you’re constantly leaning into my face whenever I watch your videos
Nice shirt!!!
Hey Jim! Did you ever try the super 42 spring with A5 or only the sprinco green? If so, what were your findings?
I've got that setup in my primary rifle, the spring is a tad stiffer for the first couple hundred rounds. I had to reduce my buffer size from what I was using prior with a standard rifle spring. After that I did notice it gassed back up, put in the original buffer weight and now its been running great a couple thousand rounds.
Very informative. Also where is that shirt from?
Possum Punch Merch
He said it leaning back into frame at the end
He mentions match grade barrels, any particular length range? (14.5 - 20+)
Largely depended on you context or goals. Most of their instructors use 14.5s if I remember correctly only is using a 18-20” on his 556 bolt gun.
14.5 is the Lord's barrel length. Add a suppressor and squeeze a little more velocity. My 14.5 gets 2645 non suppressed goes transonic 665 yrd. Got hits out too 700.
Anyone recommend a good optic under 2k that’s not an LPVO? 😊
Beaten to death. That's what an SPR is.
Like @BruiserIndustries says, some people are hearing it for the first time. We were all new to this at one point.
@@jimmybrodriguez fair enough. 9-Hole Reviews has a lengthy video or two on the topic where they talk history, use, characteristics, etc. Check it out if you have not. Here's an idea: the Special Poverty Rifle. The cheapest SPR possible that attains its accuracy.
I’m sure we can make that happen
What upper is that?
Dmr. Spr. pmr 18 in .. mark12 semper fi!!!!!!
Are mk12s 16 or 18 inch barrels
18 inch with rifle length gas system predominantly. BCM made a 16 inch MK12, not sure how it stacks up to the 18 inch model?
Me: knows what an SPR is
*My brain* : short parreled rifle!!
First comment gang gang. Best intro song out there.
Much appreciated
Get some.
Larue Stealth 2.0 is the best true free float system I've seen at a great price point if you want a true SPR setup.
My SPR setup:
White Oak 16" SPR barrel
Larue Stealth 2.0 13" mlok
SOLGW BCG
SSA-E trigger
AEM5 supressor
Magpul SL-S with Arisaka bag rider and butt pad
Solid setup
What would Kevin Owens do. WWKO.
Getting better gear helps you get on target to neutralize faster and easier.
Yes, but it's a balance. You have to have the skill to utilize the tools.
@@jimmybrodriguez Just as you said, people bring good gear to such courses at Ridgeline and still everyone has plenty to learn, no matter how well set up they are, gear-wise. After all, even accurate/precise rifles don't make accurate shots unless the shooter knows what he's doing.
It's not a "get the gear, nail the shot" turnkey operation. OTOH, good barrel, good trigger and good optics, plus proper cheek riser, go a very long way to improve accuracy chances at 200+ compared to most rack-grade rifles. Jay explained it all pretty well in that short excerpt.
If you take a class with Jay he'll also tell you about personal experience with various rifles, what ammo he loads, how often he cleans his barrel etc. Not for free though, nor should it be.
But Jimmy, I need a Gucci rifle that shoots laser beams and will stack holes at a mile. Only the Hubble telescope for the optic will do.
no
It’s a gun that you will never use.
Jim goons 😂
I'm just a dude playing a dude on the internet
IT'S NOT LAYAPOLED IT'S LEW PULLED REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
we apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused
0:10 absolutely stupid comment... "It is super secret information that you have to pay money for" NO THANKS
Really quick, I feel like it’s worth noting that you don’t have to use quotations if it’s not a direct quote. Additionally I’m devastated I couldn’t give you someone else’s intellectual property for free.
Brutha eewwww.
Love learning about guns from a guy who has never been in a single gunfight in his entire life
Good news for you, the guys as Ridgeline have been in a gunfight or two. Also, many of the best shooters in the world and gun experts have never been in gunfights.
Lol OP, have you? Doubt youve stopped spooning your anime body pillow long enough to crawl out of moms basement and touch grass.
Why is he wearing a battle-belt during classroom training? Lame.
Ah a fellow gooner
This would be a lot more enjoyable if this Larry guy separated his words instead of just letting them fall out of his mouth
