Stopped at 15 after playing for 6 years. Now picking it up again at 19, it's difficult to get the techniques back in my head, but your videos are helpful!

Damn your good at explaining things. My mariachi teacher told me to play some notes down a octave and I had no idea what she meant by that.

Hi Sophie I don't have a large hand. By chance I came to hear about 7/8 size violins. I bought one and it has made octaves comfortably possible for me now. Thank you for your tips. Best regards. G Ire adult student

I can really say, that with your tips I finally crushed the barrier to managing octaves. Not perfect yet, but I know how to work on it. Thank you! (Do you want to make a video about ricochet? :P )

I'm new to the violin (less than 1 day) does muscle memory kick in after a while in finding the distance to slide the fingers, eg if you were playing a diatonic or even a full 12 tone chromatic scale? I'm musically literate for the piano fortunately, the violin theory shouldn't be a challenge, the playing of the instrument most definitely will be though

Hi! Muscle memory works best when your fingers don’t slide to find the note. When you confidently approach the note from above and drop the finger right where it’s supposed to be, it makes it most clear in your head to remember how that felt and sounded. Even for chromatic scales, it is done by dropping the fingers, not by sliding. I hope this makes sense! And that’s awesome you’re musically literate :) violin should be easier to read than piano hahaha. Best wishes to you!!

Do u put your 3rd finger down when you play octaves??

    • @SophieCViolin

Hello! I only very lightly place it on the strong. I wouldn't say it's placed down, though. Only to maintain the hand frame.
