- Yoel and Mari try a "torta cubana" for the first time. This "torta" or sandwich was invented in Mexico named after Cubans. Yoel has never heard of the term "torta" much less ate one. Watch him try one today

What is in the torta Cubana? It looks delicious!
Sausage, ham , chorizo , cheese , egg, roasted adobo pork leg or shredded pork , avocado , pickled jalapeños and carrots , and lastly the bread. Ohh and mayo and maybe refried beans .

For those of us who have never tried a torta cubana, it would be nice to know what they put in it.
An Authentic Cuban Sandwich is a gloriously grilled sandwich filled with ham, pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and yellow mustard on Cuban bread and then pressed.

My go to order at a restaurant in my local town was a Cubana. It was my absolute favorite! Sadly the place closed. This makes me miss that sandwich. ❤
Yum! We have a little mom n pop shop in Montrose Ca called Tortas Mexico. My dad gets the pulled pork ones for gatherings but damn I wish he’d get the Cubanos! Soooo good! (Oh and I can only eat a half bf I have to nap. So that’s economical! 😅)

En Puerto Rico le llamamos sándwich cubano, pero no lo preparamos en pan redondo como en México, sino en nuestro pan sobao criollo. Es triste que los propios habitantes de Cuba vivan en tal precariedad que no puedan darse el gusto de saborear tanta delicia.

I’m vegetarian. And I don’t proselytize. But I wonder if it’s even possible to be Cuban and not starve to death, without all that meat and gooey cheese in all those Cuban foods you’re feeding him. It’s adorable, watching Yoel’s eyes almost roll up into the back of his head devouring all the foods he was denied in Cuba, like he’s making up for lost time! But I’ll bet Cubans in Cuba have learned to make delicious traditional recipes without meat and eggs since they’ve been involuntarily denied that choice. They might actually be healthier because of it, even though a lot crankier!

Everything in moderation, kids. There’s more than enough protein in beans, rice, vegetables, grains. Fast foods and convenience foods are designed by the industry to be delicious, and designed to fall just short of what they call the “bliss point,” so that you’ll be left craving more. Don’t forget your roots. Those are the traditional recipes I’d like to learn about, as a serious cook and baker!

Cuban food is not hot spicy in the least, but it can be an acquired taste.

My mother had a business in a small tortilla car and the Cuban one was almost 40 cm long: it could be pork Pierna or milanesa) chicken (milanesa) or beef (milanesa) or all of it, or the xxl all the meats: also; ham, quesillo, hotdog, American cheese, beans and eggs: avocado, lettuce, tomato and onion. That was the super Cuban XXI lol and mayonnaise!! Plus the sauce the customer would like!

So it seems that Cubans have never heard of a Cubano or it is completely different from the videos I’ve seen of yours. Was invented in the USA? Like little havana in Miami? Or is it a recipe that some of the more privileged Cubans brought over? Or is it an older recipe lost to socialism? I’m genuinely curious about this now.

Cuban demographics have changed. Back in 1959 when Castro took over, 80% of the population was of European descent, hence white. When racial divides were eliminated and the population grew, you got a far more mixed crowd. There are still a lot of white Cubans around but most of them are not on the island.

Mexican tortas where I am at.. 1 or 2 slices of Roma tomatoes and then 2 small pieces of aguacate.. a small slather of 'meat' then lettuce romaine piece, then that's it.. i started making them myself.n
