I've played hickory golf for 10 years or so. Once you have the bug it does take time to build a "set" that suits your swing and gives varying distances to get you round a golf course, rather than just the taster sets here. I would recommend anyone to try them. They are a lot tougher than you think particularly if the heads have been reset properly for play.
Interesting. I knew of Kingarrock and expected to see better quality clubs available. I agree with Homer, having actually playable clubs would be much more authentic and much more fun. Good players with good clubs can score very closely to their modern game. Go to the Society of Hickory Golfers website and see what is available out there. The British Golf Collectors Society as well as many national hickory playing groups can get you into the hickory game somewhere near you.
Matt I’ve literally just bought a set of hickory shafted clubs...I love the history behind it...I’m keen to hit some golf balls just to experience what golfers did over 100 years ago
I thought I heard Zac's voice! That's awesome! I actually had a few hickory clubs (still do) and I wanted to try and send them to Zac's friends over at Experior, but they don't have a PO box sadly.
Extreamly humbling experience...as a beginner golfer. Watching how challenging it used to be, even for a professional vice novice with newer clubs, is ultimately humbling. Excellent video. Well edited and well preformed. You should be proud!
Would be more enjoyable with some new hickory clubs. A lot of people playing hickory don't seem to understand that the likes of Hagen and Jones weren't playing in the 1920s with clubs from the 1820s. They used the best quality they could get at the time.
Enjoyed it, would love to see more. I've visited the web sites of manufacturers who produce hickory shafted sets, but couldn't bring myself to spring for a set I might only use once or twice during the year.
@@Mattfryergolf There are one or two "Hickory Tournaments" that I know of which take place in the southeastern USA during the year. It's more like a "convention/get together," to keep the memory alive.
Dunno if you guys would be able to "swing" it... but have a challenge with Rick Schiels. Possible Peter Finch. I seen they tried out hickories as well. Just an idea... 😁👍
I really enjoyed that. I always feel a deep connection with that area of the world because most of my genetics originated there. I know I'm built for that weather and not for where I'm residing at the moment, which is currently the ghastly hot and humid southeastern United States. This would be something I would definitely like to give a go, as y'all would say.
Matt great video Fleetwood isn't too far from me they have a persimmon soceity competition Looks an incredible experience playing with clubs and balls that the greats of the late 19th early 20th century would have used These guys like harry vardon, jh Taylor and james braid must have had some talent
Great to welcome Matt and the guys to Kingarrock Hickory Golf and we are so glad to hear how much you enjoyed your Hickory Golf Experience. If you have been inspired by this video and want to enjoy the same unique golfing experience for yourself head to www.kingarrock.com to book your round.
Well, the clubs are 100 years old...What I would like to see, is an artisan actually make a full set of early 1900's hickory sticks with old tech, but NEW WOOD...THEN play a full round with THAT!
The way golf was supposed to be played - stroking the ball, not jumping out of your shoes while smashing it as hard as possible. And the course is just fantastic, no carpet like fairways and greens, but well maintained. The rough is like it should be not 1" and 2" high but proper knee high grass. I am not against change and new technology, but some things does not change for the better.
Just awful examples of playable hickories. Properly prepared and with the right number of clubs ie 7 or 8, decent golf can be and is played. Sub par rounds are achieved today with proper clubs, not that rubbish.
What an epic round bro!!
it was amazing, we have to do it again soon!!
Matt, you are my hero, playing hickory golf the full round.
Matt - excellent feature - cant say anymore 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
More people need to try it and see just how the game has evolved💪💪💪
thank you craig! yes they do its amazing!!
Well worth the 35qd. The clubs would be great to own and mount on the wall. The stories those clubs could tell
honestly the best time I've had on the course in ages!!
Would love to have a go at using some hickory clubs. Like the idea of seeing more TH-cam videos on hickory matches.
ive got a set coming so will get more vids done!
I play hickory golf all of the time. My favorite club is my 5 iron. My oldest club is from 1900.
My 45o mashie niblick is my oldest. It is equivalent to a pitching wedge.

Nice to see your dad letting you use his clubs ;)
haha love it
I remember someone giving me a niblick years ago, great fun to play with

I have always wanted to do this.

I love playing vintage clubs! My mates and I just did 9 holes with a complete set of '30s Bobby Jones clubs. Amazing stuff Matt

Very cool!

It would be well worth it Joe, you'd have loads of fun!

on my bucket list
its well worth it!
Interesting to see how slowly the lads swing with these clubs. I guess a 100 mp/h+ swing would damage the clubs
On a course that matched the length of courses played with these clubs it would be interesting, once a year.
Awesome, but it would be very cool to play with old age club that have been refurbished in the old ways. I saw people doing this for fun.
They look very difficult to hit, the shaft on those irons looks like it’s going to break

Yeah you have to give it a go, you'll love it

well worth a try, its so much fun!! thanks for having us!!
Matt Fryer Golf you are welcome back any time 👍
Loved this, Matt, but, when the rain came, I froze and wanted to go inside to sit beside a friendly fire. I’m definitely a fair-weather golfer.
Yeah the rain was a bit much, but still had loads of fun!

Nice video mate .iv hit a few hickory clubs and it's not easy is it 🤔
its a totally different experience, half the battle was keeping hold of it in the rain 😂
How were your hands afterwards - any hand arm vibration or vibration white hand / finger 😉😉🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just out of curiosity, are the lawn mowers at this place sheep?

see if you can find an old club maker!!!!

What an abuse of these wonderful old clubs :(
