I played completely unrestored clubs for a 2 year period and don't remember breaking any. I've had on or two where the head loosened in the socket after a few strikes - and put those to one side. Now i take the heads off and reset them with epoxy and usually replace the old leather grips with suede wraps if they are good enough to go in the bag as players. Once restored you can hit them with as much confidence as modern clubs - though i agree even with the woods i tend to think "pitching wedge swing" rather than knock the cover off the ball.
I play 100% hickory and they are clubs just like the modern counterparts. You can try and "knock the cover off" but that is never good with any club. Low scores can be achieved.
Been playing hickory for 6 years, not broke a club yet so far. They don't go as far so you gotta hit them solid. 6000 yard course is about the longest most people will want to play. The ball matters. Low scores are possible my best is 73. It's always fun to win a match against technology too!
Hi.. wondered if I could pick your brains .. I’ve just bought a set of Wilson fg53 irons .. 3-PW in nice condition..they have forged written on the heads in red and gooseneck written on the sole..wondered if you knew much about them as I can’t find much info on google ... much appreciated .. Tom
I'm not sure but I think they were a 1991 release, designed to be a playable blade design with a larger head than usual. They have some good reports from those who play them.
Well done. I like the striking sound.
What fun!
It was, can't best a bit of hickory golf!

Well done on the 73!
Two brave shots with the Tom Stewart 2 iron. I like to shank all my hickory irons off into the woods.
🤣 Hickories are excellent for shanking, I think there's a special type of vibration through the hickory shaft from a good shank
Well done just shows how much clubs have moved on or not.
You can put together a good set of old hickories for a fraction of the cost of new modern clubs.
That is so true, many people assume that they're museum pieces and will cost a small fortune.
