I volunteered 6 months of my time in NY and NJ after Hurricane Sandy. I rented uhauls, maxed out my credit cards buying generators, baby supplies, dog food and other necessities. I drove down to places like Breezy Point and the rockaways and personally delivered products. I organized dozens of people to gut homes for free. Fema and red cross were nowhere. We drove block by block knocking on doors. People like myself and my crew of volunteers did more than any government or non profit agency.

People need to be prohibited from living in these areas or or adopt very stringent building, wind and water management so they can survive this intense weather without having to rebuild constantly. Everyone needs to have emergency supplies for 3-7 days because it takes awhile for the government to assess and mobilize responses; especially when it is catastrophic like this. A better idea is to form neighborhood groups trained by FEMA or Red Cross to help until government can respond or help with evacuations.

When I ask him if he wanted me to get ahold of my wife down in Asheville and ask her how it’s going, he shut up got on his golf cart a ride away.
