How does a 13yo capture end stage addiction so perfectly? & yes, The Warning lyrics are always open to the interpretation of the listener but after 30 years as a first responder, that is exactly the black hole of addiction. Destroying not just the addict but more so the loved ones trying to save them. Absolutely amazing art every time from The Warning.

Pau has directly said that this song is about addiction. It's the change in chorus "Even Black Holes let me be" that gets me every time.

Yeah, Pau is amazing. Written when she was 13, and here, where she is 15, making an old man cry like a baby.

The genius of Paulina can't be underestimated. Once in a lifetime is a massive understatement. She's a drummer who can come off her set and deliver this INSANE keyboard performance of a devastating yet beautiful song that she wrote when only thirteen. She's Tori Amos + Rock Drummer of the year; it's nothing we've ever seen before. She can drum (4 limbs) while singing(5), while performing to the crowd(6), PLUS running the show via her laptop(7). She has at least seven independent brains in her head. My whole life I've never felt total awe for another human until I figured out everything she's doing ( I really started to feel it in Survive from TedX). Also… BAND-MAID®Domination, Official Live !!!!!!

I read that her smile near the beginning was from hearing the crowd singing along with her. That's got to be a very special moment for performers.

There are some mediocre fan videos of the 10th anniversary concert at Pepsi Center in Mexico City where Pau sits at the grand piano and plays *Black Holes.* The crowd drowns her out by singing the chorus. She turns to look at them in shock and delight, and almost loses it, but continues. I can't wait for the Pepsi Center concert to be made public like the Teatro Met concert was. If the live *Hell You Call a Dream* clip was any indication, it will be overwhelming.

The guitar playing in this song is exceptional… some of Dany’s greatest and at the level of a pro session player hired hand, not the level of a teenager still finishing school.
    Ale is amazing as always.
And pau is a frickin genius songwriter, singer, pianist, performer… Not to mention drummer

*Show me the Light* from the same concert really shows off Ale's and Dany's early chops. Their work is understated, classy, reserved, and fits the song perfectly. Dany's solo is a sucker punch in the gut served on a velvet-lined silver platter.

Hey Red! Yes, this show was basically their album release show for their first album, XXI Century Blood. They played every song from the album. You will be blown away by how amazing their first album is, and that they were essentially 16, 14 and 12 when they recorded it. They are truly gifts sent to us by the rock n roll gods.

So many of their songs call for a close reading of the lyrics but none more so than this one. Pau wrote this in her early teens and it breaks my heart every time I hear it. The despair of an addict trying to push away someone who's trying to save them to protect that potential saviour from the harm the singer has done to themselves. As they lyric says, "I surrender in my defeat". For me, black holes has always represented needle tracks. Truly heart breaking.

Black Holes was one of the first Warning songs that grabbed me. My brothers are addicts, one now dead. No expressions of sympathy, please. Pau has covered the subject completely.

Red, I don't recommend live fan cams versions very often. But when Pau played this live last October at Pepsi Center in CDMX, alone with a piano, adding a string section behind her, and 8000 in the crowd, is something you might want to watch on your own time. I can tell you as one of the 8000-stong chorus, it was one of the most touching, emotional performances I have ever seen with my own eyes.

I tend to lose the battle to contain any waterworks at the lyrics:
"Don't hold on. Don't hold on.
    I surrender in my defeat.
Don't hold on. Don't hold on.
Even black holes let me be."
As someone who had a loved one's life cut short by addiction, that description of the depth of despair is gut-wrenching.

In a parallel world, Paulina Villarreal Velez would have won numerous literary awards by dint of profound metaphorical poetry she had been writing since she was a child. She would have been felicitated as an emerging young intellectual.
Some landmark concerts from their early days in this wonderful journey over past decade
    - 2015 concert at Liceo de Monterrey where each sister chose a song to showcase her instrumentation ability in front of Berklee's admission committee; Pau & Ale were underage for the course & needed a waiver to attend
    - 2017 TEDx at Univ. of Nevada (following their debut TEDx at the same venue an year earlier)
    - 2018 Dakota Bar concert
    - 2018 storytelling concert at Agua Fria, Monterrey where they talked about their experiences till then followed by Q&A session with patrons
    - 2020 Whiskey A Go-Go
    Now the poetry:
    "All alone in an alleyway
    Staring at my face
In the reflections of broken bottles"
By adding the word "reflections" Pau tells us that this is a song about introspection.
She wrote Black Holes at 13, after reading an article about addiction & alcoholism. Although the romantic theory is that she wrote it when a family friend succumbed to alcoholism.
"Don't hold on, don't hold on
I surrender in my defeat" - poignant, so poignant.
I wonder whether Shakespeare, had he been a Gen Z like Pau, would have used imageries like "Was shattered like a satellite" & "And the venom starts to swallow me whole; Like black holes". Satellites & Black Holes were unknown in his times, of course.
In Octpber 2023, The Warning gave 3 full production concerts in Mexico to celebrate first 10 years of being a band. In the 2nd concert at their hometown of Monterrey, Pau sang Black Holes accompanied by a string orchestra followed by the 3rd one in Mexico City where 8000+ fans joined her.
Here is a recording of her at Pepsi Center in Mexico City on 28th October 2023 (courtesy Eric Alderete, a long standing member of The Warning Army).
    th-cam.com/video/GxhHT_KZOTo/w-d-xo.html
BTW you have reacted to Breathe from this same concert a few days back.

Wow indeed! They all learned to play piano before they learned other instruments. Reactors are often shocked to hear this one. Pau wrote it at 13. It proves that she is a classical emotive empath - a person who can get inside a character's psyche and feel what they are/would be feeling, and express it as they would express it. This isn't Pau in first person, it's the character she's singing for. She feels every bit of that character's pain, and gives it to us. She does this same sort of thing in *23, Revenant, Show Me the Light, Breathe,* and the amazing cover she does of Radiohead's *Creep.* Now go watch *Show Me the Light* from the same series at Dakota Bar 2018. Pau on piano again... Dany and Ale are exceptional with their brief instrumental accents on that one. Ale's bass reminds me of Jaco Pastorius' work on some Joni Mitchell albums, and Dany's guitar is reminiscent of one of her heroes, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. That soft, quiet guitar cuts like a knife!

I like the spheric sound of Danys guitar in the Dakota Bar. She uses a kind of this distortion also a little more pregnant in a sequenze of "shattered heart" - Maybe she uses it some more in the furture - I like this alot. They already have so many details in there and these hamrmonies over three voices. In other versions there are also harmonies where Alejandra goes up to falsetto - these girls are leaving me speechless every time

One of the things that impress me the most from them, is how in a really short period of time (10 years) they have achieved things most people can't in their whole life. I mean, is a clear example of all the things we can achieve when we focus on doing what we love and never loose sight on that. I guess they have spent most of their life on a roller coaster that never stops. I salute them and anybody else who has found their way; a way that is not easy to find for many people, It is really a bless.

I read that they had classical piano training at an age when other kids were fingerpainting. They are seasoned veterans.

The entire Dakota Bar concert is available on their channel. Black Holes is incredible, every time they perform it. However, the most recent version at their 10th Anniversary concert in Mexico City is a highlight. Though it only features Pau on piano she is accompanied by a string section featuring violins, violas and cellos. WARNING: You may suffer sudden leaking from your eyes. I know I did.

Even at age 13, Ale has a nice deep voice.
And what an amazing composer and musician is Pau at age 15.

I was going to say after about thirty seconds that it was good but that you can see how much they have improved but scrap that, it was brilliant. 🔥Great lyrics too.

Another Pau emotional performance....such a beautiful song written by a teenager and singing with such conviction and heartfelt soul....Love these girls....love Pau, a beautiful human being. So sad that the chauvinist a- holes only look at these girls as beautiful girls...well of course they are, not their fault!!! and think that is what their talent is....the simple minded cannot get past that to realize the phenomenal talent in song writing and musicality they possess....it is unfortunate these people still exist!!! Rock on Ladies, the Army knows who you are....And Red does as well. ⚡⚡⚡⚡...Now Red...they do a song with Pau on Piano again called "Show me the Light"...absolutely phenomenal, Pau's vocals, the harmonies and Dany's guitar solo are mind bending for sure: th-cam.com/video/3CJ1KRhMxeE/w-d-xo.html. Hope you will react to this one...it is unbelievable from these teen girls. ⚡⚡

Will stop commenting about the dirt bags that make sexist comments and such about these wonderful Ladies. recently watched a livestream on Anthony Ray reacts to the warning. The comments were disgusting and filthy regarding these young ladies...not one Single Warning Army fan said anything...nothing...they just praised the reaction and showed up in by the 100's . Have no respect for TWA anymore!!! I left a lengthy comment about the dirtbags comments and disrespect...not one so called "Army" fan commented. WTF

The Full Concert at the Dakota Bar, th-cam.com/video/1PgpShsmWgk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5J1xMGu8XtdTEl6h Great early show! We would not mind a full show reaction in one sitting. Listening to their early work, you will fully understand why TWA's mantra is, "They don't write a bad song!" But, definitly, you MUSTSH listen to Runaway and Copper Bullets just to comprehend just how GENIUS they were, even as mere children!
