The Wii and the Wii U in my opinion merged in a way to form the switch -motion controls -two ways to play - a pro controller -and joy-cons look like wii remotes and the console looks like a Wii U gamepad
Fun fact: the Wii remote was meant to be an new controller for the GameCube, and Nintendo even made a prototype of it with wired connection to the console, but later they pushed it to be launched with the Wii since the GC didn't sell that well.
Fun fact: the nes and snes controller that comes with the nes classic and SNES classic has the same cable as the nunchuck so you can use a nes or a SNES controller on the wii!

I feel like Nintendo can improve probably by making those screens a little bigger. Like the OLED model. And improve the color choice for people who like Various colors and styles. And as always, Thank You!
You can customize them yourself. I changed my joycons to indigo to match my Gamecube controller. It's very easy and only takes like half an hour to complete. I would definitely recommend to do it if you want colors that aren't available through Nintendo. Edit: You can also change the backplate which takes less than 5 minutes, I did that as well.

Wii Mini, Late 2012 (Around the same release date as the Wii U). 4 & 5: NES/Famicom Classic; SNES/Super Famicom Classic. 6: The Wii Classic Pro, 2008 (Repositioned the cord, made the controller look more conventional, and has 2 handles)
Nintendo also released the Wii classic controller pro, which added trigger buttons, unlike the two smaller buttons that acted as them on the original classic controller, and two hand grips similar to more traditional controllers

My friend had a virtual boy, but got sick everytime he played it due to red and black sickening colours and got headaches, so he threw it away 4 weeks later.
The next controller from Nintendo should have the A, B, C, X, Y, and Z buttons on the left side. The analogs should be on the right side. The triggers should have force sensitivity, and it should have a guide button which is either the Super Mario symbol, or the Nintendo logo.

I like the unique 3 pronged design. It was comfortable. The only part not comfortable was its analog stick.
