Interesting November was the month I started to reduce my carb intake to as low as possible. It was 2021 and I am still alive with 50 lbs less weight and no diabetes after almost 26 years. People including my doctor think don’t believe me. Except my wife who was the reason I did all of these thing for her. I have my CGM data and my labs to support what I did worked.
Awesome read. As a pre-diabetic, my doctor won't prescribe me a CGM. I keep asking, and this past week, I was told I need to be a diabetic to be prescribed a CGM. He stated, "It's the rules." I stated, "those rules are making people diabetic and didn't he think it's better to help stop people from being diabetic?" That was met with, "That's the rules" again. I informed him that he will no longer be my doctor and I will be seeking someone that actually wants to help people improve their health. He looked at me like no one had ever done this. I'm tired of sub-par medicine.

Btw you can get one directly from levels wo a prescription & I think from Dr. Becky Gillespie here on you tube--also via levels, I think. Beyond that, anyone can purchase a glucometer over the counter & use it periodically throughout the day. It's old fashioned but still effective.

I'm so sorry 😢 I gained weight too but I quickly got myself on keto and whole foods. It's a big challenge to be a driver and manage a healthy life style. It takes allot more focus and discipline. Regular trips to the grocery and cooking supplies on the truck. Then there's the clean up process 🙄 and if the company we drive for is a slave driver, then we barely have time for cooking and cleaning. I have found myself many times putting roller dogs in a coffee cup and drowning them in mustard 😂 I hope your nephew is able to find his way to better health.

Love this interview. I've always been active and healthy, but started gaining weight once I hit my my mid 50s. I low calorie dieted a few times and lost weight, but it didn't last. Turned 67 this year in February, weighed 240 lbs and decided to go keto the following month. The results staggered me. Lost 15 lb in the first 6 weeks which I found out later was mostly water. As I continued to lose weight, my mental clarity improved and instead of reluctantly running to stay fit, I began to enjoy it so much that I would laugh to myself while running, because it was so easy! All my aches and pains which I put down to age have vanished and I feel as fit as I was when I was in my 20s. I'm down to 163 lb (I'm 6ft 1inch) and my only issue now is to not lose anymore weight. What a nice problem to have LOL! Been on a 16:8 IF since the start and will probably scrap that to maintain my current weight. LOVE KETO!
That's such an encouraging story. How did you cope with carb/sugar cravings if you got them? Have you considered adding some resistance training to build up your muscle mass as it's likely your muscles have atrophied naturally (as they're not having to carry around nearly 80 pounds excess weight.)
Keto works because it puts you in a calorie deficit easier. Calorie deficit is how you lose weight. However way you want to accomplish that albeit keto or whatever. It will work. High carb or low carb doesn’t matter.

All of us have more stored fat on our frames than we could possibly store as glucose. If you metabolize carbs for your energy you have to eat more because you run out of energy. If you eat fat to burn fat, your body is going to take what it needs and store any excess energy whether it’s high. Carb or low carb. The high carb person will lose weight faster because the body has to work harder to convert it to energy. In a high fat low carb, the body works less hard because it’s already in the form it needs. The military industrial complex that served world war to Vietnam, etc. also turned into the agricultural industrial complex pumping out food, which might have calories, but no health. In war shelf stable food that could be transported was very important. Today we understand some of us what nutrition should and can be. I also think that the pharmaceutical companies mimic the scale of the military industrial complex, and or not just working to heal, but to keep themselves in business

Thank you gentlemen for this video and so many others. I wish this had been around at least 15 years ago, for my sister who was a CC nurse for over 40 years... Who always had weight and health issues that with the medical answer, had done more harm than good for her. She passed this year from recurrent Uterine/endometrial cancer. I'm frustrated and heart broken, but after her funeral in September I was able to influence a few family members with the same family issues as you, Dr. Tro : familial obesity and all the diseases that go along with it. We do have the MTHFR gene in the family, (one of my children found through expensive testing not paid for by health insurance). I'm hoping those in the medical community will see, and like you admit their lack of knowledge on nutrition, and it's role in healing, and then act for the betterment of humanity. Thank you again! I liked Tro's point about all the LDL studies being done on the SAD. We don't have data on LDL and the low carb (non-diabetic) diet. That's very interesting.
The preliminary results of the lean mass hyper responders study have been published. Finding: no difference in ct scans of persons on keto for almost 5 years and healthy persons with normal LDL, matched for age etc.
I don't remember the day I quit smoking or the day I started eating low carb. It's just the way it is now. So many of the things I used to eat are truely not tasty any more. I picked up a pastry this weekend and took a bite and went dry and dense with no flavour except sweetness. Yup, that is what I remember, they are always stale. I threw it away.

Harder than ever now, & don't know if I'll see the finish line this time. One thing I know is it's more than carbs & it's not addiction. Having taught in a wide variety of schools, I have found that instead of making sugar the enemy, emphasize that protein and healthy fats (like whole milk and cheese) are brain food. Then you don't have to even talk about fruits and veg. Just keep reminding kinds that brain food is so important, you want to fill your stomach with brain food and healthy fats, leave the buns, crust, etc on the plate...fill your tummy with brain food and leave the rest. Have them start by seperating the brain food out from the rest and eat and drink that first, then see if they really want anything else or if it would be better to leave the things that slow their body down? Also, can kids get double the burger, double the hot dog so they can get more brain food? What parent in their right mind is going to complain against "brain food?" Make protein and healthy fats a forgone conclusion as the start of the meal and kids will want to get up and play before they get to the carbs unless they are addicted, then you might need an exchange 2 buns turned in = and extra meat patty...that meat patty is worth 2 buns, even a 5 year old can see the meat patty is worth more! An orange = 2 cheese sticks?...easier to peel and eat! Then there is the overweight kids get to go to the nurse at recess and get a piece of jerky and 2 half & half tiny cups...so special things instead of deprivation...when they don't need it anymore, they will chose play over food.
All food has fat even spinach. A healthy diet high in carbs and fat and protein and starch all work together. The body is brilliant at using the foods it’s given to keep the body healthy. Carbs is brain food, fat is energy and has no nutrients but it’s VERY much needed as is starch and protein. All 4 work best consumed in whole food form.
Re: the appropriateness of lowering carbs for kids. My experience in bringing up this topic in front of my town's school committee followed by a face-to-face with the manager of the school's nutrition program is that this could be a massive waste of time. The bureaucrats in charge of the city/town school district's nutrition program are there, fundamentally, to manage the delivery of USDA approved products to the children. Although some might nod in understanding of your message to lower ultra processed, hyper palatable and nutrient poor food, they are cogs in a massive machine that seeks to increase their funding while delivering the government compliant products. Breakfast is especially challenging as the offerings are upwards of 70% carbs and 40% sugar. Convincing the local program managers that kids need the fat and protein and not the carb heavy products goes nowhere because of the huge supply chain and USDA requirements. Actually improving the BMI or otherwise feeding truly healthy macro nutrients to the kiddos is waaaaaay down the priority list, at least in my limited experience. One big reason told to me is "the kids won't eat it". Whole milk, unflavored Greek yogurt instead of the sugary 4 oz flavored yogurts? "The kids won't eat it."
My LDL is 586 on keto. I agreed to take crestor twice a week and increased my non starchy veggies. I’m not convinced my insulin resistance is under control yet. It’s so difficult to get GP’s to check Insulin levels and other more detailed labs.

Lot of people don't understand the difference between natural fats and factory created fats(oils). While natural fats are recognized and utilized by the body, manufactured fats are not recognized and stressful to the body. Ask for butter at a diner, they'll bring margarine. It would be interesting to see an LDL particle size profile of the patient with 797 LDL. If they were smeared across the size spectrum, that would be more worrisome than if they were all skewed into the smallest 2 size categories.

I`ll try to ask a question even if it may seem off topic somehow. I believe it isn`t. Most medics worldwide are not interested into applying low carb diet, folowed by high fat intake. The old traditional beliefs, or more like the lazyness to actually study more about the things you dont`t know much about. The question I have is how can we make them folow the new norm, based on the new studies? There`s conflict from what they originally learned in school and what actually they should apply. There are many medics which don`t want to listen to other points of view, they just dont want to be challenged and refuse anything else that doesn`t go based on their belifs. For example some apply a keto diet but add carbs to it (a lot of it) and the fats are still limited as a sourse of fuel. Some of these people are fans of the dead mr Ray Peat and have so many elaborated ideas on how to educate us, their patients. I`m trying to say it`s really hard to find a good practitioner. Yes, I am dong a carnivore diet siwth some small cheats from time to time (I just started 4 months ago and it didn`t go well at the begining), yes I don`t have any confidence in the local medics from my region, because I had and it just got crushed over the years. I`m happy an grateful to see there are people who have things to share with all of us. I`m all ears on my question above.

High LDL is generally considered dangerous by the medical community. Light vs fluffy particle size is an obviscation & not taken seriously by the vast majority of Drs.
Divide your triglycerides (in mg/dL) by your HDL (in mg/dL). If the ratio is lower than 2.0, the larger, buoyant LDL particles are more prevalent. Above 2.0, small dense LDL will predominate. This method is described by Benjamin Bikman in his book "Why We Get Sick." Great Book!
Congratulations to Dr. Tro for knowing that it is important to measure ketones. Dr. Tro also knows that people are not guaranteed to be in ketosis by a low carb diet. Hopefully Dr. Westman learns and stops misleading people with his incorrect definition of a keto diet. There are many carnivores that eat zero carbs that are not in ketosis. My doctor is very bad for my health went over my labs she just doesn't understand how the human body functions and refuses to interact as an adult just poop poos my questions and comments. I spent several hours on my lab comparison pre and post low carb diet/eating. Regardless of her close minded g-dlike attitude I am the champion of my health.
Wow, that's great. Good for you. Too bad the high carb low fat no junk no smoking no alcohol & active lifestyle didn't work for my poor 62 yr old hubby who had a heart attack in May with 3 stents now in 2 arteries with 90 & 100 % blockages... he's been super lean all his life. Afraid of Saturated fats always ate steel cut is fashioned oatmeal & banana for breakfast, no sugars, chicken, baked potato with mixed veggies drizzled with olive oil etc for much Dinner, Salad for lunch. I can go on & on... This lifestyle of low fat, no red meat, "healthy whole grains" fruits & veggies, avoiding red meats, processed anything & all the "things" totally did nothing for him! It got him nowhere except heart attack & serious blockages. So I'm now having him go super low carb/keto & his high level Triglycerides have basically disappeared but of course his LDL cholesterol has really increased now. All his life when he ate the typical "healthy" diet, he NEVER had high cholesterol in any form just high BP & he took meds for it for over 40 years. He avoided salt, added sugars etc but loved fruits etc. Never in his life did he have high cholesterol BUT he had a heart attack anyway... so much for the "benefits" of the Mediterranean Diet & its "heart healthy" concepts ... I'm sorry but it's hogwash! It's Keto all the way for him now. My poor hubby. Well wishes to everyone & good health to you!

We introduced Coca Cola around the world during WW II. However, the stupidest thing I ever heard is that soda causes obesity...if only

Thank you gentlemen for this video and so many others. I wish this had been around at least 15 years ago, for my sister who was a CC nurse for over 40 years... Who always had weight and health issues that with the medical answer, had done more harm than good for her. She passed this year from recurrent Uterine/endometrial cancer. I'm frustrated and heart broken, but after her funeral in September I was able to influence a few family members with the same family issues as you, Dr. Tro : familial obesity and all the diseases that go along with it. We do have the MTHFR gene in the family, (one of my children found through expensive testing not paid for by health insurance). I'm hoping those in the medical community will see, and like you admit their lack of knowledge on nutrition, and it's role in healing, and then act for the betterment of humanity. Thank you again! I liked Tro's point about all the LDL studies being done on the SAD. We don't have data on LDL and the low carb (non-diabetic) diet. That's very interesting.
A few very interesting studies underway.
The preliminary results of the lean mass hyper responders study have been published. Finding: no difference in ct scans of persons on keto for almost 5 years and healthy persons with normal LDL, matched for age etc.

I don't remember the day I quit smoking or the day I started eating low carb. It's just the way it is now. So many of the things I used to eat are truely not tasty any more. I picked up a pastry this weekend and took a bite and went dry and dense with no flavour except sweetness. Yup, that is what I remember, they are always stale. I threw it away.
I quit smoking after 48 years 2 years ago. Every day I start keto and every afternoon I go on a sugar rampage. It's like I'm possessed.
👍 Congrats! I quit smoking almost 25 years now. It was a fierce battle, & bc it was so hard, I pray I never go back. Lost significant weight twice in my life. Harder than ever now, & don't know if I'll see the finish line this time. One thing I know is it's more than carbs & it's not addiction. Idk what it is, but I think Taubes hits on it most closely when he defines it as a result of an unconscious process. Something that just is as one's heartbeat & blood pressure & as one's body shape.

Having taught in a wide variety of schools, I have found that instead of making sugar the enemy, emphasize that protein and healthy fats (like whole milk and cheese) are brain food. Then you don't have to even talk about fruits and veg. Just keep reminding kinds that brain food is so important, you want to fill your stomach with brain food and healthy fats, leave the buns, crust, etc on the plate...fill your tummy with brain food and leave the rest. Have them start by seperating the brain food out from the rest and eat and drink that first, then see if they really want anything else or if it would be better to leave the things that slow their body down? Also, can kids get double the burger, double the hot dog so they can get more brain food? What parent in their right mind is going to complain against "brain food?" Make protein and healthy fats a forgone conclusion as the start of the meal and kids will want to get up and play before they get to the carbs unless they are addicted, then you might need an exchange 2 buns turned in = and extra meat patty...that meat patty is worth 2 buns, even a 5 year old can see the meat patty is worth more! An orange = 2 cheese sticks?...easier to peel and eat! Then there is the overweight kids get to go to the nurse at recess and get a piece of jerky and 2 half & half tiny cups...so special things instead of deprivation...when they don't need it anymore, they will chose play over food.
All food has fat even spinach. A healthy diet high in carbs and fat and protein and starch all work together. The body is brilliant at using the foods it’s given to keep the body healthy. Carbs is brain food, fat is energy and has no nutrients but it’s VERY much needed as is starch and protein. All 4 work best consumed in whole food form.
Oranges and a little cheese stick is amazing to eat together.
Milk should only be for infants maybe toddlers.
Chasing health rather than number on the scale is the way to go. Weight loss is a byproduct…

Re: the appropriateness of lowering carbs for kids.
My experience in bringing up this topic in front of my town's school committee followed by a face-to-face with the manager of the school's nutrition program is that this could be a massive waste of time. The bureaucrats in charge of the city/town school district's nutrition program are there, fundamentally, to manage the delivery of USDA approved products to the children. Although some might nod in understanding of your message to lower ultra processed, hyper palatable and nutrient poor food, they are cogs in a massive machine that seeks to increase their funding while delivering the government compliant products.
Breakfast is especially challenging as the offerings are upwards of 70% carbs and 40% sugar. Convincing the local program managers that kids need the fat and protein and not the carb heavy products goes nowhere because of the huge supply chain and USDA requirements.
Actually improving the BMI or otherwise feeding truly healthy macro nutrients to the kiddos is waaaaaay down the priority list, at least in my limited experience. One big reason told to me is "the kids won't eat it". Whole milk, unflavored Greek yogurt instead of the sugary 4 oz flavored yogurts? "The kids won't eat it."

My LDL is 586 on keto. I agreed to take crestor twice a week and increased my non starchy veggies. I’m not convinced my insulin resistance is under control yet. It’s so difficult to get GP’s to check Insulin levels and other more detailed labs.
Check out the recently published paper on lean mass hyper responders. Ct scans revealed no heart proms, same as. control group

I watched a video where someone suggested high LDL might be related to an undiagnosed infection. If that's true, lowering LDL through the addition of carbohydrates might be counterproductive. 50:58
Lot of people don't understand the difference between natural fats and factory created fats(oils). While natural fats are recognized and utilized by the body, manufactured fats are not recognized and stressful to the body. Ask for butter at a diner, they'll bring margarine. Whatever happened to oleo, the latest designer oil?

It would be interesting to see an LDL particle size profile of the patient with 797 LDL. If they were smeared across the size spectrum, that would be more worrisome than if they were all skewed into the smallest 2 size categories.
Why? Do you really think your body knows what it needs? Remember your body actually makes 80% of its own cholesterol and how it’s carried is just that.

I’m morbidly obese. Just started weight training and the trainer says I need to eat carbs. I don’t know what to do. I’m extremely tired as I try to get healthy snd am suffering low sugars.
Dr Westman, could it be possible that LDL cholesterol was lowered in the sweet potato inclusion case because of additional copper? Could beef liver or capsulated liver give a similar effect?
I`ll try to ask a question even if it may seem off topic somehow. I believe it isn`t. Most medics worldwide are not interested into applying low carb diet, folowed by high fat intake. The old traditional beliefs, or more like the lazyness to actually study more about the things you dont`t know much about. The question I have is how can we make them folow the new norm, based on the new studies? There`s conflict from what they originally learned in school and what actually they should apply. There are many medics which don`t want to listen to other points of view, they just dont want to be challenged and refuse anything else that doesn`t go based on their belifs. For example some apply a keto diet but add carbs to it (a lot of it) and the fats are still limited as a sourse of fuel. Some of these people are fans of the dead mr Ray Peat and have so many elaborated ideas on how to educate us, their patients. I`m trying to say it`s really hard to find a good practitioner. Yes, I am dong a carnivore diet siwth some small cheats from time to time (I just started 4 months ago and it didn`t go well at the begining), yes I don`t have any confidence in the local medics from my region, because I had and it just got crushed over the years.
I`m happy an grateful to see there are people who have things to share with all of us. I`m all ears on my question above.

Where does AGES glaciation fit into the keto diet. If you look at how they are formed it is not just sugar. Scales of AGES in meat cooked at high temps like most people eat it, is the highest. Boiling meat is the lowest. A1c is a measure of glaciation of red blood cells. Could AGES be raising the A1c in low carb diets?.

High LDL is generally considered dangerous by the medical community. Light vs fluffy particle size is an obviscation & not taken seriously by the vast majority of Drs.

Divide your triglycerides (in mg/dL) by your HDL (in mg/dL).
If the ratio is lower than 2.0, the larger, buoyant LDL particles are more prevalent.
Above 2.0, small dense LDL will predominate.
This method is described by Benjamin Bikman in his book "Why We Get Sick." Great Book!

Congratulations to Dr. Tro for knowing that it is important to measure ketones. Dr. Tro also knows that people are not guaranteed to be in ketosis by a low carb diet. Hopefully Dr. Westman learns and stops misleading people with his incorrect definition of a keto diet. There are many carnivores that eat zero carbs that are not in ketosis. Dr. Westman, maybe you can explain how this is possible?
The body turns excess protein to carb. That would be my guess. I believe M Eades said so in the protein video here.

@@mariad1151 I'm not sure, but when I work out hard in the morning after not eating breakfast (somewhat fasted) my blood sugar rises. This is normal. Also, my ketone levels go down - I think this is also normal.
My doctor is very bad for my health went over my labs she just doesn't understand how the human body functions and refuses to interact as an adult just poop poos my questions and comments. I spent several hours on my lab comparison pre and post low carb diet/eating. Regardless of her close minded g-dlike attitude I am the champion of my health.

Too bad the high carb low fat no junk no smoking no alcohol & active lifestyle didn't work for my poor 62 yr old hubby who had a heart attack in May with 3 stents now in 2 arteries with 90 & 100 % blockages... he's been super lean all his life. Afraid of Saturated fats always ate steel cut is fashioned oatmeal & banana for breakfast, no sugars, chicken, baked potato with mixed veggies drizzled with olive oil etc for much

This lifestyle of low fat, no red meat, "healthy whole grains" fruits & veggies, avoiding red meats, processed anything & all the "things" totally did nothing for him! It got him nowhere except heart attack & serious blockages. So I'm now having him go super low carb/keto & his high level Triglycerides have basically disappeared but of course his LDL cholesterol has really increased now. All his life when he ate the typical "healthy" diet, he NEVER had high cholesterol in any form just high BP & he took meds for it for over 40 years. He avoided salt, added sugars etc but loved fruits etc. Never in his life did he have high cholesterol BUT he had a heart attack anyway... so much for the "benefits" of the Mediterranean Diet & its "heart healthy" concepts ... I'm sorry but it's hogwash! It's Keto all the way for him now. My poor hubby. Well wishes to everyone & good health to you!
