    Thank you Dr. Westman! As a 2nd year medical student currently learning cardio/kidney and hearing nothing but the need for “DASH” diet + avoid meat, dairy while promoting vegetable oil as heart healthy from professors, this video was so necessary to unbrainwash myself. I hope one day teachings from medical professionals who actually dive into the mechanisms of nutrition can be mainstream. Thank you again!

      It’s shocking as to how dumb this is. I bought Ancel Keyes original 7 countries study. The source of the anti-saturated fats diet heart hypothesis. Studied to death and never supported. All GPs need to get proper training in metabolic syndrome reversal. Two thirds of Americans are suffering from this.

    I took a nose dive on carnivore zero carbs six months ago just from watching one TH-cam on carnivore. Three weeks on it I reversed pre-diabetes and psoriasis. I was very much a vegetarian with little fish or meat. On my first week I tossed all my spices except salt. Gave away everything from my pantry including flours/sugar/canned goods. Cleared my fridge till only eggs, dairy and meat were left. Zero temptation! A bit drastic but happy to know am no longer plagued with chronic kidney disease. Am 71, super active on kickboxing and pickleball. It’s a game changer. Thank you Richard and Dr. Westman, you’re both awesome trailblazers 🎉

      You didn’t reverse diabetes. You stopped eating the carbs that your body can no longer cope with. You still have diabetes. How do I know that to be true? If you went back onto carbs your blood sugar levels would still yo yo up and down and insulin would not be in control like it should be. You have treated the symptom, but not the cause.

    • @albrackets8446
      @albrackets8446 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jgreen9361 You might say you did not "cure" diabetes, but you can say you "reversed" it as long as blood sugar / insulin are kept in check. I know of no treatment of alcoholism that allows one to go back to drinking alcohol.
      There is no such thing as an essential carb. And no, that is not the same thing as saying 0 carbs is always optimal. But for people with T2D, the optimal diet may be to keep the carbs as low as possible. While I am critical of Dr. Westman's comments in this particular post, the fact is that he works in a clinical setting with patients who are real people, and he is able to reverse T2D in his patients.

It is incredible and tragic that doctors are not learning the benefits of dietary protein while in med school. Had severe arthritis in my right hand for many years to the point were my doctor was considering steroid injections. I have also had back pain from a road accident when I was 16. Had followed the government and NHS guidelines on diet for many years, cut out animal fats, used vegetable and seed oils, margarine and limited eggs and dairy. Red meats were very rare in my diet. After my wife passed away 4 years ago I decided to change my diet completely. Eliminated veg and seed oils, started eating lots of eggs, cheese, butter and dairy. Red meat and fish often, particularly pork as it is a major source of essential nutrients. Cook mainly in animal fats. Cut down on carbs but still plenty of fruit and vegetables. Use olive oil and occasionally 'Cold Pressed' rapeseed oil. I cook from fresh or frozen with ready meals a rarity. Mainly a pizza once every couple of months as a treat. Within a year my arthritis had gone, I lost over 2 stone and I have just realised my back pain has gone. Not bad for an old codger aged 77. I can still chase the youngest grandchildren round and play garden badminton with them. My conclusion is 90% of good health is diet!!!!
    Always had backache from the age of 16 when I decided to argue with a van, the van won and I had a broken leg, a back injury and some short term memory brain damage. Over time the brain learns to ignore the pain although it is always present. Suddenly realised my back pain has gone. Says it all really. A real food diet is king!

    Richard Smith is absolutely fascinating. I am convinced if we are high fat carnivore with zero carbs that our body processes vitamins and medications totally differently. Just the one example of Vitamin C and glucose competing for the same receptor was a delight. No wonder if we don't eat sugar and carbs which turn to sugar, we need so much less Vitamin C. Thank you Dr Westman! One of my fave carnivore videos.
    Age 78, carnivore now 18 months. My arthritis pain is gone, hand tremors gone, off of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds. Cardiologist first reduced my heart meds and then totally took me off of them. No more episodes of passing out. Lost 30 pounds without trying. Off of most of the supplements I had taken, as well as pain medications.

    Dr Westman, many people think that Protein raises Insulin, but in fact Protein raises Glucagon, which is the hormone that is responsible for the ketotic state. Professor Ben Bikman done a great video mentioning this fact

      @ImiChitterman 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ah my friend - both happens, I have this done on my state - both happens and I could explain why - here is what you can do - do the insuline test two time in the same day on the protocol. Do it evening after you mean ( Keto - or meat base - meat only meal) but then have eggs and other such stuff in the moning and then do a little walk, and get your readings.. you will see what happens.. with the insuline.

      @@ImiChitterman Actually, the Insulin rise is not normal, because Glucagon and Insulin are antagonistic to each other. If it does raise Insulin, it can only be a very small amount, with the main emphasis on Glucagon. It certainly will not raise them both equally

      @@yehonatan2020 valuable point here. It raises becuase of the body converting loads of amino acids into glucose. This is where the lessons in Complete Ratios of the 8,9 or 12 amino acids are pretty important.. eg. Branch Chains are 3 amino acids, when supplied, there can be excess EAA which converts easisly to glucose molecule and off course glucose, but insuline also raises one we have an over abundant source of anything that need to be stored.. the issue i observed is that it is hyper insulin that is creating our issue.. when the insuline is just runing and runing at a high rate..

      @@ImiChitterman Actually, if you listen to Ben Bikman on his Insulin Vs Glucagon video, whats interesting is that its actually the diet composition that matters. In the context of Very low carb, Insulin is not raised. If you have not seen the video, I highly recommend you check it out.

      Actually, as a carnivore, my blood sugar was always 10-20 points higher and my ketones were non existent. I’ve learned that I need to begin and end my day with fat (I use browned butter bites as my breakfast and evening snack). I limit my protein to during the day (but be sure to get enough for your body, don’t sacrifice your protein levels). If I do this, my blood sugar goes back to normal and my ketones get into a therapeutic mode.
      You can’t constantly eat protein throughout the day if you want to run on ketones. You have to rely on fat as your main source of energy.
      My body will constantly convert protein to glucose if I eat protein all day and then I never get into ketosis. I had to change how much and when I eat protein in order to get my body to run on ketones and lower my blood sugar.

    Thank you Dr Westman! This video was in my feed this morning and I watched it because my husband and I were eating keto for 2 or so years and fell off the wagon a year or so ago. Since I stopped doing keto I’ve had several issues such as gout (started suddenly and I didn’t even know what was happening-we were moving at the time and I thought it was just the physical exertion and stress and figured it was arthritis). We are 64 and it’s more important now more than ever to get it right at this time of life when the tendency for increased health issues looms large. There’s so much misinformation “out there” one that’s not a doctor has a hard time deciding who is right and everyone claims that they have evidence -including studies-to support their theory.

    25:00 Grass-fed meat has about 11.3 mg of vitamin C per pound, and grain-fed meat has roughly 7.3 mg per lb.
    However, heat-sensitive vitamins such as Vitamin C, B1 (Thiamine), and B9 (Folic Acid) can lose up to half of their content during the cooking process.

      Just as well. No need to cook meat so no need to lose any vitamins. It's fine to eat it raw. I haven't fired up a stove since summer when I decided to try consuming beef raw and I've been very pleased with the results. From my little continuing experiment, I have found myself craving salt to be zero. So I've stopped salting the meat simply because it tastes fine without salt when it is not cooked. Some pieces of meat are difficult to cut, so I've been using scissors for those. What is interesting is those pieces containing the tendons and bones and marrow are often sold a lot cheaper than the other pieces of meat. To me, they taste better and, since I don't really eat with anybody else (side effect of carnivore when everybody else thinks they can survive on vegetables is that I have to just walk away and leave them in their disbelief), it's not a big deal to use scissors to cut the ligaments or chopsticks to remove all of the marrow from inside the bones. Seems better than putting that stuff into a soup and cooking it until it falls off the bone. Can still do a soup after everything is removed and get a tallow from anything inside the bones that can be eaten, but at least the majority of the animal is eaten without cooking.

    I've never been able to sustain a keto diet. Too many options, too many cravings & too much inflammation. I can eat a carnivore diet for years though. My grocery cart is usually 9 items delivered to my door once a week. I keep a tight grocery budget, save money, avoid grocery stores & I'm always in a state of ketosis. Plenty of energy for work and exercise.

    The secret to body health. It takes little or only one. Man is a mammal therefore his bodily development begins with the suckling of his mother's milk. This is the model food for man for his entire life. It is generally known that breast milk contains: water, protein, fat, some carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Everyone focuses on protein, fat and carbohydrates as the main components of energy. These are all necessary but no one asks the question of what is needed to provide electrical impulses to the muscles. It is calcium. Smooth muscle fibers are found in the walls of hollow visceral organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. The heart is one big muscle. Skeletal muscle fibers are found in muscles that are attached to the skeleton. Calcium enables muscles to function properly, including contraction and diastole, which is necessary for every movement, every heartbeat, every movement of the intestines, pancreas and liver. As we know, the muscle that can never stop is the heart. So the brain will always consider it a priority to get calcium ions to the heart muscle. There is a widespread belief that calcium is mainly needed for building bones. And this is the biggest lie that is publicly presented. It is enough to ask a basic question: if calcium is used mainly for bone building, why does the body prefer to endure bone and joint pain due to osteoporosis, why can it even allow bone fractures due to weakening of bones so that a person cannot move to look for food? Why does it prefer to suck all the calcium out of the teeth exposing a person to digestive problems due to lack of chewing food (for the body, an artificial jaw does not exist). Now that we know that this is a fact, the second question is: where is the calcium so important if the body robs the bones and joints of it? Well, the priority is precisely the continuous work of the heart. Then the work of the limbs and organs that have muscles. The conclusion is clear that bones are an iron reservoir of calcium, which must always be on hand. That bones are a storehouse is evidenced by the fact that they can knit together, that is, rebuild their structure with calcium. It is a storehouse for issuing and receiving calcium. Daily standards for calcium intake: women aged 19-50 years - 1000 mg, women aged >51 years - 1200 mg, men aged 19-65 years - 1000 mg, men aged >66 years - 1200 mg, pregnancy and lactation 50 years of age - 2000 mg/day. These are, of course, averaged values but are quite authoritative. Thus, any lower supply of calcium to the body means tapping into reserves in the bones. That's why many elderly people already have depleted calcium stores and suffer from a variety of bone disorders: fractures, back pain, joint pain, dental cavities. It also has a great impact on the psyche. I would argue that addiction to all stimulants such as coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, addiction to emotional sensations, sports, sex are masking low access to energy. We consume energy in abundance yet our transmission network is inefficient. Therefore, the body seeks moments when it is not at such low energy levels. For example, how does coffee work? When it is in the blood it has the property of abundantly pulling calcium out of the muscles and letting it circulate through the circulatory system. Then one feels arousal because the main internal organs have temporary full access to energy while some muscles do not, and that is why they may tremble, for example, hands or eyelids because there are disruptions in the contraction and diastole of muscles that lack calcium. Some say that coffee leaches magnesium and that's why there are these tremors. Nothing could be further from the truth. Coffee per balance provides more magnesium than it excretes due to its diuretic nature. So homeostasis or energy balance must be restored in the body so that it begins to function properly. When the human body is saturated with calcium it will not seek more sensations. It will not throw itself on carbohydrates - a source of quick energy. The need for energy in general will decrease and stimulants will become unattractive. Then you can even risk saying: take care of your calcium levels and eat what you want. This is because nature enters its proper rotation and selects for itself what it needs in the right amounts. That's when you get back to the right weight and proper fitness. And what are the best sources of calcium? Dairy products are known for their high amounts of calcium, however, consuming them is associated with more or less of a problem of mucus formation in the body as an immune response so they should not be the main source of calcium. In my opinion, the best source of calcium is eggshell. One whole eggshell weighing 6g contains 2g of calcium, which is exactly the highest tolerable intake of calcium for adults over 50 years of age.
    , and half a shell provides the total daily calcium requirement. Shells are best eaten raw and with the peel in which there is collagen to preserve all the biological values of the shell, ground or crushed for better absorption (wash off or avoid the paint from the stamp marking the origin of the egg). If you cannot tolerate eggshell, you can supplement calcium with calcium citrate, which is a relatively inexpensive supplement. This citrate does not cause constipation and is well absorbed. You can start with a dose of 500mg of calcium per dose. Time of consumption indifferent. It is best mixed with food. Its taste is indifferent and does not affect the taste of food. In this way you can withdraw any bone pain, back pain, joint pain. If short-lived pains appear somewhere in the body, it is a sign that the body is starting to rebuild damaged tissues. Why should a person supplement vitamin D3? To pull calcium out of the bones faster. The prevalence of osteoporosis by continent ranges from 8% in Oceania to 26.9% in Africa. Depending on the country: from 4.1% in the Netherlands (most of the country lies below sea level and is crisscrossed by a network of rivers, lakes and canals . All this means that the air is relatively humid throughout the year. Fog and mist are often experienced, especially in late autumn and early spring) to 52% in Turkey
    If you're concerned about vitamin D3, the issue is simple. I began to wonder why the mainstreaneria together with LC-friendly nutritionists are collectively blowing the same bagpipes “More vitamin D3” well, and it dawned on me. The wrong question gives the wrong answers. The thinking is: when there is vitamin D saturation there is immunity and well-being. The conclusion: vitamin D3 is a boon. And this is the thinking that pharma expects. As is known, vitamin D3 is produced by the body under the influence of the sun, but not to have additional benefits from sunlight, but to counteract the oxidative stress that the sun's rays cause in the body. For this, calcium is needed to shield cells from oxidation. That's why vitamin D3 taps into the body's largest stores of calcium, and why so many relax in the sun and some find the sun very stimulating. The reason is simple: strong calcium saturation of the body at the expense of the bones. This is why there is such a plague of osteoporosis in Africa. Arabs are smarter covered from head to toe. It is known that before the Flood the earth was covered with a mantle of steam, which is why such a Matusalem could live 969 years. Calcium is so important for two reasons: neural conduction and protection. E.g., we have calcification of the pineal gland and many blame it on calcium. The truth is that calcium binds fluoride, which destroys the pineal gland by inactivating it. The second thing: atherosclerotic plaque. She is formed because of damage to the walls of blood vessels. The body then sends a dressing consisting of calcium along with cholesterol. When the dressing arrives at the site it is applied to the wound, dries and a scab is formed - an atherosclerotic plaque. By the way, the cause of these wounds is the consumption of rapeseed, sunflower and other oils, which oxidize quickly. I saw a study done over 50 years where they correlated carbohydrate, protein and fat intake and their effect on disease. It turned out that carbohydrate intake increased by a few percent, protein the same but seed fat intake increased by as far as I remember several hundred percent and here was a sharp increase in vascular and neurodegenerative diseases. And then there is the allegation that calcium causes kidney stones. The kidneys damage oxalates and the body sees this. It then sends calcium to bind the oxalates and so kidney stones form. That is, calcium saves the kidneys from total destruction and prevents becoming a lifelong patient of external dialysis. IMHO if a person took care of calcium saturation such diseases as parkinson's (shaking hands), alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis, reflux (malfunctioning esophageal foramen muscle) would disappear. These are all diseases that are a symptom of nerves dying, from a lack of signals reaching them from the brain to stimulate them.

      Very Interesting comment...I had to reread it a couple of times but still don't understand about vitamin D3. I supplement with D3, K2 and magnesium combo. You are saying this is wrong??

    • @phillvandersky6254
      @phillvandersky6254 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@omarez6896 Vitamin D3 “pulls” calcium out of the bones because when it appears in the body it gives the body a signal that there is oxidative stress. Under natural conditions, this oxidative stress is caused by the sun, and that's why the body produces vitamin D3 to, among other things, take calcium out of the bones if there's not enough of it in the blood and muscles because although calcium alone is not an antioxidant, but it reacts and forms antioxidants, such as calcium carbonate. Taking synthetic vitamin D3 can be compared to taking artificial sweeteners, which have no carbohydrates and yet raise insulin in the blood. K2 can be supplemented but only together with calcium supplementation. When it comes to calcium from eggshells, you don't need to supplement anything extra because there is strontium, which facilitates calcium absorption. Besides, the research on K2 is not clear whether this vitamin helps calcium absorption. Too much magnesium can also block calcium absorption. With calcium, it's the same as with ketones on a low-carbohydrate diet. Initially, many ketones are excreted in the urine because the body has to rebuild the metabolic pathways for taking in ketones from food. In the same way, calcium taken in doses of up to 2g is initially mostly excreted in the urine but after adaptation of 4 to 16 weeks, all of it is well absorbed.

    The mechanism for Vitamin C deficiency causing scurvy is the failure of collagen synthesis. In order to make collagen, it is necessary to convert proline into hydroxyproline. This consumes Vitamin C in a 1:1 ratio. However, there is an alternative source of hydroxyproline, and it comes from the connective tissue consumed by eating a carnivore diet. So eating meat reduces the Vitamin C requirement even further than by just eating low carb.

    Very interesting discussion. On the topic of scurvy, I was curious why sailors got scurvy but the Inuit didn't. It took many weeks of searching the internet, but I found a copy of a 1700's ships manifest as to what a sailor's ration was. A typical ration for a sailor as written in this manifest, was 3 oz of dried meat, a loaf of bread and a gallon of beer. So, how many carbs were in that loaf of bread, and that gallon of beer? I can see blood sugar going through the roof, and with no source of vitamin C, I can believe scurvy could be the result. The Inuit, eating just meat and fat, with pretty much zero carbs wouldn't have the inflammation caused by the high carbs that the sailors had.

    Yes, I had a reversal of kidney failure. Prior to going on the carnivore diet I had a GFR of 69. Two months after starting the carnivore diet I had a GFR of 111 and was no longer taking medications for CHF, HTN, diabetes or GERD.

    Yes, even add butter or MCT Oil to your coffee. Some add heavy whipping cream to their coffee and allulose or stevia. Make sure the sweetner doesn’t have cane sugar, maltodextrin, or other names for sugar mixed in.

    GLUT-4 transports glucose from the blood to the muscle and liver cell membranes. It does not transport glucose from the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. Therefore, it does not affect absorption.

    Listen to your body. I do keto 98% of the time and feel better than ever. No indigestion, heartburn, bloating etc. Every once in a while I'll go off of it for a day here or there for special occasions or vacation. I still sort of stick to it but when your limited on menu and you don't know ingredients it's hard. But those occasions are few. I've lost weight and feel great... Thank you for this information.

    I don’t need a clinical study to know Italians lived off of quality olive oil for hundreds of years and live very long lives.. my entire family used only high quality olive oil and everyone lived to their mid 90s -100.

      I read Italians used animal fats before WW 1&2.
      Modern Italians, French and other Europeans also have many health issues.

      Im an Italian from the north of Italy. In my region there was no olive oil, we used lard and my relatives also lived into there nineties and above. Their longevity was not the result of olive oil but the because the diet of those generations was less processed with less chemicals. The modern Italian generations will not live as long.

      Recent DNA of an Italian region of many people living to 100s, all were within 100 mile radius of one single man, who's DNA was in all of the centarians. Is it food, or just the right genes?

    I take supplements with turmeric and piperine because it really helps me with joint pain (my knees hurt - especially when I kneel for a long time on a hard surface or when I'm driving for a long period). Since this is apparently not healthy for the liver are there any good alternatives?

    What do I do for potassium and magnesium without vegetables or fruits? That's why I've never went to keto. I have been doing intermittent fasting for 3 years, no processed foods, etc. Would keto require supplements? It seems so to me. I need understanding. Oh, and I have high blood pressure, that I can't seem to control without medication. Only one medication, 5 mg, but none, too high.
