Many Thx for sharing!!! As a child in the Caribbean, I was Black, poor but loved. As a 12 year old immigrant in America, I realized I had instantly become Black, Proud and Hated!!! Soul and Gospel music gave me great comfort and hope!!!

Curtis Mayfield is one of the Greatest Poet.. Singer.. Songwriter.. Innovator and Political Activist that has graced this planet. Even though he is an Icon he is still underrated. We don’t make them like this anymore.

What i REALLY appreciate most about music from black artists during the 60s 60s and 70s is how POWERFULLY UPBEAT AND POSITIVE it was it made you want to get up and dance and sing along. It just made everyone HAPPY and feel good no matter how bad things were . I miss those days when people COULD SING ABOUT LOVE FOR EACH OTHER

As you see in this documentary they, the music industry TV etc, would not our people make message music by and large. The Impressions starting in the 60s the Ojays in the 70s proved message music. Love them.

Iam a 65 YEAR old black woman from Richmond Virginia. I grew up listening to Mr. Mayfield's music I love his music I wish the children and young people of this generation minds could be more like our generation was. There is so much hatred among the younger black generation now it just doesn't feel the same anymore. Black people used to love each other but now most of this new generation hate each other. But not all of them are bad. I'm going to keep them all in prayer. Merry Christmas to all and have a blessed Holiday

I'm a 59 year Sikh kid from Slough, and loved the Motown era as a kid, and the entire Jazz/Funk/Soul of the '70s. Curtis was a beautiful genius poet, and I agree with everything you say. What happened to all the love...? However the next generation, and then some! I think understand that Love isn't changing the world. So they believe to succeed they got to get pushy... Maybe. But lovely to read your post Valeria.

I am a 66-year-old woman from Richmond, VA who understand just what you mean! Mr. Mayfield songs inspired us to love and respect each other. I think it is why we got so much more done in the small amount of time than we have gotten done in the following generations. It seems he was the key to our moral and social conscious.

I agree with you. Children aren't raised like we were. We came up in the church, we respected old and young. When Mom sent us to the store, we had to stop by the elderly houses to see if they needed anything, and we better smile and be greatful. Because of it I'm 67 years old and my mom is 87 and still have her sense and drive like a teenager 👍🏾
I give all thanks to my Lord Thank you father and thank you Jesus for advocating for me,🙏🏾❤️👍🏾💪🏾

Thank you for posting this great documentary. I was a White girl who moved up from old neighborhood. Mama's Italian people were all my early yrs. There were Blks & others that moved around so I had exposure to their culture. My family loved music & dancing. Freash out of high school my early job was at Woolworths. Payday I picked up my check & headed for new clothes, & records. Every week: Impressions, Four Tops, Temptations, James Brown, Fontella Bass, Wilson Pickett (The Midnight Hour), & on. Very unusual taste for a girl in our wealthy neighborhood since 9 yrs old. I hear Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis & others stories. I later realized music taste was a part of me from early childhood. Lot of good music of that era from different races. I am so blessed to have lived through the times of the greatest music. Enjoy this music & God bless all of you!❤

Growing up in the 1960's I always associated Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions songs and music with mellow Soul music and the Civil Rights Movement. When I hear their songs I remember the early and mid 1960's and It always brings back those memories of the Civil Rights Movement along with their love songs like I'm so Proud, So very 'Hard to Believe', etc. Great music we will probably never hear again.

Reply b fm34 from Denise f i e l d s well hello and good morning depending on where you are and I just received your comment in regards to Curtis Mayfield yes I do agree with you very much on your comment because there are so many things that are going on to this day and I was just speaking with another listener and basically I was asking the same thing as yourself but we ever see a better day and I am not a negative type of person but there is just so much that's going on that I don't believe that we will see it in our lifetime not to say that it won't happen the things take time and there are just so many things that are out of whack and it's very very sad it's sad for so very many I remember my growing years it was just so different at least even though we did a lot of traveling but to the places that we went to on the weekends I remember we would by hide and seek around the house and it would be pitch Black and we didn't have to worry about the things that you can just not do today we used to set up our lemonade stands with selling cookies and we didn't have to worry about someone coming along and trying to adopt us so yes I do agree 100%. I miss your Mayfield put in so much work and I'm not going to leave out the name of the impressions because they all work together but there was one thing that I recently found out you doing my own homework because someone had asked me about war the group war and if they were in the Hall of Fame and if not why did I think that might be but as I continue I found out that Curtis Mayfield was inducted twice and one time I do believe that was 1991 for being a solo artist I don't have that other day in my mind I'm sorry that's ridiculous time but then the actual group and himself were actually inducted into the Rock and hall in 1995 and I remember when I saw that and read about it I was so very very happy I have to say with tears because I am a very sensitive person and I was just so happy to see that because Curtis Mayfield works so very hard at the time the doctor from Martin Luther King was out there working very very hard but music has a way of resonating and one thing about Mr Mayfield's music it resonated it resonated across the color line and people just liked the messages and his songs wonderful thing it's just so amazing with music can actually do so what was it about this particular gentleman that made you send in a comment was there anything in particular other than what you mentioned because I know I'm being hit with some things today that I hadn't thought about in oh my God decades and all of a sudden they're just like right here in the forefront well meanwhile I'd like to thank you so very much for being a listener to the station and anytime you feel like commenting please feel free to do so and they'll be more than happy to get back with you and if there's a song that you'd like to hear please send me the name of the song title along with the artist and it will be played for you okay so again I thank you so very much and I hope you have a wonderful wonderful day and thanks again. 😎😎😎😎😎🌷🌈🥀🥀

And when I found out that he had been inducted into the Rock and Hall of Fame with the impressions and then later on he was re-inducted as a solo artist which was really beautiful. I would like to thank you so very much for being a listener to the station and anytime you feel like commenting please feel free to do so and I'll be more than happy to get back in contact with you okay I just only wish that some of the work that was done by Dr Martin Luther King and Curtis Mayfield and The impressions and of course there were many more that could have really resonated so we wouldn't have the type of problems in which we're living into this day so meanwhile I think you again and I hope you have a lovely day and I do thank you anytime.

Curtis mayfield was always right on time with his music. Examples “Freddy’s dead that’s what I said. He then ask a question. “If you wanna be a junkie, why?. Remember Freddy’s dead”. “Supper-fly, you gonna make your fortune by and by. But if you loose, no questions why because in the game all you know is to do or die. He was a cat of the slums but a mine that wasn’t dumb. But his weakness was shown because his hustle was wrong. “He had a mind of his “own but the man lived alone.”Ooh “SUPPERFLY”

Why do young people today, tend to PRAISE to NO END , the Lead Singers of famous R&B GROUPS, while IGNORING the OTHER MEMBERS ?
This video is about THE IMPRESSIONS . Curtis Mayfield first began his career as a member of the IMPRESSIONS. He had over 50 chart hits with THE IMPRESSIONS from 1957 to 1970, at which point he went solo.
But the video is listed here on TH-cam as being about CURTIS MAYFIELD. Just CURTIS.
But the VIDEO is credited to Curtis Mayfield and THE IMPRESSIONS . It’s actually SAM and FRED o f THE IMPRESSIONS that are doing the Voiceovers…why is TH-cam crediting ONE PERSON ?
People also pull this same dumb stunt with THE MIRACLES. Smokey Robinson was a member of THE MIRACLES for almost 20 years !! But , all people talk about today, is only SMOKEY, SMOKEY, SMOKEY…as if he was in the studio recording all those hit record s by HIMSELF. Young people today really need to do more RESEARCH…and give proper credit to ALL of the members of these famous groups…instead of just ONE PERSON.

This documentary takes me back to my dear father's collection of albums, back in the 1970s, when he would take us from Chicago's Southeast side to 12th St., Roosevelt Rd., and Halstead Ave., to visit, at that time, the world famous Maxwell St. Market, where we would go so my Dad could buy work clothes, good jeans and socks, abd, sometimes shoes for his 2 growing sons, a couple of either Vienna hot dogs or the famous Vienna polish sausages, extra onions of course, avd then cap off the visit to the street market vendors, where he would purchase his albums and 45s, particularly 4 copies of The Impressions albums, either a "Greatest Hits" collection on ABC/Dunhill records or an original "cutout", always negotiating, for the sheer fun of it, the best prices for the albums! Then, we go home, and watch Dad pull one of the records out of its sleeve, and look at the album covers, over and over! This is a wonderful post; thank you!!!!!

One of my first CD's I bought back when CD's first started to gain popularity was Rhino Top R&B Hits of 1963 and when I saw Its Alright on there I said "that must be a different Its Alright" than the one I know because there's no way in hell that song came in in '63 and was still being played that much in the early 70s. Reply beautyrest from Denise fields I received your comment on Curtis Mayfield and that's why I wanted to contact you back he put out lots and lots of beautiful music with lots of messages and something that I did not know I didn't know that him and Dr Martin Luther King were out there together Curtis was out there doing his music and sending out beautiful messages to the people and Dr Martin Luther King being a pastor of Reverend was out there giving his message in a different way on the way that a person of the church would when I saw the movie it was very enjoyable to me because it was a part of History for one and I was just so amazed with Curtis Mayfield because of all this going on Dr Martin Luther King him and his group and other people that were out there unfortunately we've lost Dr Martin Luther King but nobody tried to hurt Curtis Mayfield and he was able to cross that line people listen to his music and to be very honest with you I thought that's why we would have lost him because of that but through the grace of God we did not and I mean he put in endless work toward this man was tired and I don't know if you know or not but he actually received a Grammy lifetime achievement in 1995 and he was also inducted into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and then he received two separate ones for individual artist so he was actually being watched and listened to and the people loved him you don't get that if you're not loved so I'd like to thank you so very much for being a listener to the station and anytime you feel like commenting please feel free to contact me and I'll be more than happy to get back with you okay so please take good care of yourself and if there's something that you'd like to hear please let me know and I'll be more than happy to make sure that it's played thank you and take care. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌈🌈🌈🍒🍒🍒🍒.

@@shirleycanida3273 from Denise f i e l d s good morning Shirley how are you I don't know where you are so I really don't know if it's morning but the reason that I was contacting you was just because I received your comment on Curtis Mayfield and I'd like to say that I do agree with you 100%. Yes he did deliver he delivered an awful lot you know I'm learning something more and more and that's what I'm always telling individuals that as long as you live you are going to always learn because there's always going to be something that you did not know and I had always thought that because he was out there and singing those type of songs you know like really did the dope dealer in Superfly and stuff like that that he would have never this is what I'm thinking to myself that there was no way that he would have ever been given a Grammy award for lifetime achievement in 1995 and he was also inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame with the impressions and then he received two separate ones one in 1991 for his self and the other one was for himself but I'm sorry I don't have that deed in front of me now so I just goes to show you that this man was being watched very very well because you don't get that type of notice who doing the wrong or saying the wrong thing to me the thing that was so sad though is is that you know him and Martin Luther King were out there at the same time free quality for people and Curtis was doing it through his music and Doctor Martin Luther King was doing it as a preacher and Curtis seem to have gotten over because people loved his music because he was able to ask me cross the color line where we know about Dr Martin Luther King they didn't want him crossing any lines and then we ended up losing him and that's what I kept thinking in my mind when I was doing my homework and when I was reading about Curtis Mayfield and I was wondering why didn't anybody tried to kill him because he was out there constantly just like got your key and a lot of it could have been because of the fact that was done in two different ways because you know music has a way of reaching the heart mind and soul opposed to someone getting out there and speaking or trying to speak and maybe that's why I Curtis was able to get across so much better because of his music and because of his messages but the bottom line is is that when I found all that out I actually cried I did and then in an interview with his wife she was telling the story and you could tell that she was so so proud of him but he was so so tired so out of all the comments that are put out on a daily basis what made you decide to send your comment in on this particular gentleman which I'm glad that you did is it a particular song that he put out that you like or songs or Superfly LOL smile that was a good movie though ☺️ so you would need to let me know and like I was saying anytime that you feel like comedy I will get back with you you know I enjoy these type of conversations with my listeners because sometimes I'll send me just an a or just an eye I have no idea what is this supposed to be what is it supposed to mean I'm still young but I'm not understanding this and so when I do get bona fide comments and helps me to be able to respond from my heart so I would like to thank you for allowing me to share as well so take care and I do hope to hear from you again and I do thank you so much. 🍒💅💥👣💔🎉💕

Curtis Mayfield is a true legend and his guitar playing was really good and he would hit chords that you won't ever hear these days . He's one of the reason why I play bass guitar and been going at it for 30 years . Diamond in the back is my favorite Mayfield jam along with ghetto child . Some damn classics right there

I truly appreciated this documentary of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions! I remember singing these songs back in the day, but didn't know the reasons or motives for which they were written. They dealt with the times in which we were living, and still apply today. We must show the love of God in our lives and the way we treat one another. Great documentary!

Congratulations. Thank you for these find memories of the Legend King, Curtis Mayfield. He put out meaningful hits. Curtis focused on his surroundings and their purposes and whys. Curtis always put out great hits. People enjoyed dancing to his hits. The era of hustling and how much money a person could make and whatever it took to make it. These years came later in the 70's. Yes it was about people doing their own thing, and pushing ahead for a better living. May this Torch continue to be lite. Everyone was greatly appreciated, and told about a magnificent stories told by loving people that loved Curtis Mayfield. Love always, Patricia ❤🎉😊 Great Job!

Amazing, blessed, incredible, genius, architect, he earned every accolade and honor ever given to him and the Impressions. As a Chicagoan Herb Kent the Fly Gent used to rock Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions was a great childhood memory. His Saturday "Battle of the Bands" was a highlight, great times.

Growing up in Puerto Rico during the 1960-70s, music was a huge part of our lives for the kids and adolescents of my generation. In spite of being a mainly Spanish speaking country, our musical influences came from all over the world and so SOUL and R&B was no exception.
When the movie SUPERFLY was released I was in H.S. and I immediately went to see it and that monstrous SOUNDTRACK became part of my every day life.
I got me this tshirt with the movie's image printed on it and the first day I wore it to school at least 2 other friends offered to buy it from me. Of course I didn't and wored until it no longer fitted me.
To this day from time to time I listen to the soundtrack since Curtis Mayfield's music is a precious part of my music collection.
