When Mayfield recorded this song in 69, I was in elementary school, and it made me feel like I could be somebody in this life. As a black youth, watching the Civil Rights Movement in the South was very discouraging, so I really needed to know that I could be a winner...
@@alhoward4099 I was there with you. It was a time of having to go to work in the fields on the weekends, two in the morning, coming home at seven in the evening. Those were fifty pound bags of whatever field we worked at, at fifty cents a bag. I left home, at fifteen, lied about my age to work for Hines and Del Monte canneries, went back to school, got my GED and I've worked every since and not in the fields. I've worked in three states for the City, retired now. We are STILL PUSHING five hundred years later and today children don't care either way. I'm grateful I never had children, the road was hard enough. Mama said, "babies aren't dolls, you can't play with them and put them in the closet. The way the system works. I don't regret not having any. I'm a Great (2) auntie and that's fine with me. 🙏🏾💪🏾👊🏾👊🏾
So, we have to bring a song to school one that we like and have a meaning and this one came to me for some reason. I love song that make me feel black because I am black and I'm very proud of it. Curtis Mayfield created songs that had had a meaning for LIFE
THIS A BEAUTIFUL & OUTSTANDING SONG AND VIDEO OF GREAT FRIENDS AND OTHERS FROM THE MUSIC INDUSTRY THAT WERE ALSO TRULY UNFORGETTABLE AT WHAT THEY DID BEST WITH THEIR LIVES
CURTIS MAYFIELD IS STILL A TRUE WINNER AT WHAT HE DID BEST PRODUCE GREAT POSITIVE MUSIC AND ABOUT LIFE IN GENERAL AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED FROM THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND IT'S GREAT THAT I CAN STILL ENJOY THEM ON TH-cam TODAY WITH THOSE GOLDEN MEMORIES OF A LIFETIME
This song is still full of soul that reaches the heart, penetrates through the skin to the nerves, then to the bloodstream and the bones and marrow. I would rather be with soulful people who enjoy music like this than anything else.
Brothers and sisters, it is time to stop the self hate, tearing each other down. Recognize the greatness and God given power that we have. The slideshow/pictures of intelligent, strong, and CAPABLE black men and women made me felt 10 feet tall. Excelling in every field of endeavor or discipline whether it is in music, sports, entertainment, politics, etc. Come on people, let's reverse the curse and stand in the Sun! Where we are meant to be!!!
So did I & when we finally were blessed with a Black President and First Lady my sons & I REALLY BLASTED IT.I thank God who was born in 1931 was blessed to have voted for him ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Resilience : We have been hard pressed but not crushed. Persecuted but not abandoned. Struck down but not destroyed. We have been winners. Young folk, keep it Movin’ . Glad to see Ed Bradley, Kareem and Bill in the video. Old school integrity. Thank you , Curtis ✌🏾✊🏾
Curtis your music was right on time! The music you gave to us spoke of Pride, Hope, Love and Joy. I still listen to your music today, and I plan to keep listening tomorrow and the day after that! Oct, 12, 2021
You are sooo right!! Could somebody please tell me WHO put THIS together. It gives you so much hope to actually SEE the forerunners. I Love it!@ 2022 here Ann Arbor Michigsn in the house!
Think about this. Motown had teams of songwriters , and Curtis was matching their output all by himself! That’s one talented brother. Never to be denied his level of greatness ✊🏾✊🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤
Oh! This made me cry so hard! And, this has always and always will be my very favorite! Today we need to spread this song and give tribute to "Mr. Curtis Mayfield" for his vision. He was such an intellectual black man even with his own struggles he was a genius, DEEP! I didn't just roll on skates to his music, I listened to his lyrics even as a child I knew he was deep and he was here to deliver a message and he did that well. RIH Curtis M.
This song became my favorite during the 1960s decade. I first heard it from a jukebox at a neighborhood youth corps organization for a youth summer work program. I love this extended version and the pictures of the various towns in the states of the United States. Creative Force did an outstanding job.
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO BOTH CURTIS MAYFIELD & OUR PEOPLE! HE HAS SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING PERSONALITIES IN OUR CULTURE FEATURED HERE! I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE !

some nothing please reread my comment. It was neither negative nor derogatory and does not mention color or race. It is merely an observation. This song is about spirit

Curtis was a genius and his music was way ahead of the time. Too many skylines, sports, and entertainers and not enough historical figures. Why not the Tuskegee Airmen, First Black General, Booker T Washington, Thurgood Marshall, WEB Du Bois, Jesse Owens, Charles Drew, Jack Johnson, Eddie Robinson, Frank Robinson, Art Shell, Whitney Young, Black Army Tank Division who saved George Patton ass in The Battle of Bulge. I could go on and name thousands more, but that would take all day so I'm gonna leave it right there. Peace and 💘 Love....
