I love Stevie Wonder and missed out to have seen both Marvin and Stevie perform together, but both are UNIQUE! Luther Vandross has that same silky smooth voice but doesn't perform that sexiness and PASSION like Marvin. Teddy Pendergrass is close and yes Ruffin. I understand Marvin wanted to be like Frank Sinatra and he achieved this, but had all the nightmares.
I'm still struggling to come to terms that he was a paedophile. 😢

He'd cut 2 more albums in 1976 and '77: I Want You and Got To Give It Up (the latter topped everybody's charts in Summer of '77; he wrote it and Art Stewart produced it!); Marvin Gaye had to wait for 5-1/2 yrs to top the charts again: from late '82 into early '83, Sexual Healing was a #1 R&B, and eventually, a No. 1 Pop single in February of '83! He won Grammy awards in February '84 for Best Song Of The Year (Sexual Healing), as well as Best Album Of The Year for Midnight Love in late '82!!

I’m from D.C. born and raised. We all knew Marvin and family lived in S. W. They attended “Daddy Grace’s House of Prayer in the middle of the 600 block of M Street across from my grandparents. Every summer they had a week of revival ending with a huge public baptism outside with permission from the government to use fire hydrants. They had a huge parade while carrying “Daddy Grace on an ornate chair in try he “Egyptian/Roman style. They had a large kitchen where they sold “plates” which were everything was fresh and cooked on site. The parades were everything “Daddy Grace” threw out silver coins along the route where we kids would pick up the money it was such “fun” for us kids and a religious tradition for the adults.

Marvin Gaye’s music and lyrics are timeless.. they applied to our lives, culture and the state this world is in now and then..when you listen to songs like What’s Going on etc.. my heart just breaks, because they are so true.. of course the party ones are great but you can really understand a man’s heart when He did that one album in particular, he is from a generation before me, and I love his music, now my next generation listens to those songs too.. they apply.. I didn’t hear a word of this after the first lines about his secrets.. He’s Gone now,so whatever his journey was?It ends or starts again with God, I don’t need to hear any stories, we love you dearly Marvin R.I.P.💜

My family used to live on Nannie Helen Burroughs, but back then it was called Grant St. My grandparents lived on Jay St, NE. I was too young to know Marvin, but people in my family did. I dropped in simply to hear some Marvin Gaye music because, whenever you see his name in a TH-cam title, you know you’re gonna hear some of the world’s best music, ever! The simple truth is that we lost this beautiful gift from music far too damned soon, and far too many people contributed to that happening. Many of them still slither among us. Who they are and why they can still hide, is the real secret. Rest in peace, Mr. Marvin Gaye.

Imagine what growing up with such a father does to the child and teenager you are and the consequences for who you become as an adult. You can't become the person you were originally meant to be anymore. Also as a boy you don't get a good example of how to live well as an adult. A girl doesn't get a good example of how a man should treat her. Been there, done that. My father was a mean alcoholic and my mother didn't protect us from him. But I always stayed far from addictive products. Because I had seen what it does to a person. I needed intense therapy to become a healthy thinking person.

Born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr., April 2, 1939 in Washington DC! Mama had his Let's Get It On album (1973!) back in early '74 (I ought to know that entire LP!), and would play it almost every day! His Dream Of A Lifetime was cut in early '84 just prior to his death; and a censored version of "Sanctified Lady" dropped exactly 1 year after he died!!

Tragic story of incredible artist. That said, as a musician, I know the Blurred Lines suit was blsht! The family was able to receive millions which I’m sure they needed, but wasn’t justified. Trying to explain written music to a jury of non musicians is ridiculous way to decide the truth. They basically sued for having a similar ‘vibe’. Nothing was the same except maybe the tempo which is the speed of the song. Anyway, Marvin’s legacy carries on in a much larger legacy than most popular music made today.

Yet, as soon as we got home, a friend of mines called! And said to me, oh that's sad what happened to Marvin Gaye! I said what?" She said he's dead! I said that's a stupid April's Fool, why would you say something like that! She said to me " she would NEVER say something like that about anyone! Wow, we turned on the news and there it was.
